Camera Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II is a reimagining, as it is easy to understand the title, coming in 2015 Canon G5 X. But in the course of work, that feeling quickly dissipated, and with the G5 X II was comfortable enough to work.

Let’s look at how the camera control. The only control unit on the left-hand edge is a lever that lifts the viewfinder to the top of the camera body. The viewfinder is “thrown” with a rapid movement, and to dump it back into the housing, press on top of him.

The bottom is the battery compartment combined with compartment for memory card. The camera works with SD cards, SDHC, SDXC (UHS compatible card of speed class I). Tripod socket is located close to this compartment, so change the memory card and battery while shooting with a tripod will not work — access to it blocked. Yes, it’s uncomfortable, but you can forgive such a compact camera.

Most of the back panel takes the display, to the right are buttons tagging pictures, start, video, playback pictures and menu. The screen made a good impression: the image looks natural, detailed and contrasty. I took pictures using the screen even in Sunny weather, although, of course, in contact with the bright sun to see the details of the image more difficult. In this case it is more convenient to switch to the shooting through an electronic OLED viewfinder. It is activated by a lever on the left, then you need to pull the viewfinder itself. From the top you will see a small lever diopter adjustment. The resolution of the EVF — 2 360 000 points, the frame coverage is 100%. He, of course, very small, matching the camera, but it is quite possible.

General impressions of the ergonomics of the G5 positive X Mark II camera is arranged quite logically and conveniently. Obviously, the cornerstone was placed a compact but considerable sacrifices to go not have to – all you need is the user at hand. The controls, of course, tiny that might not be too convenient for people with large hands, but I got the hang of it quickly. Situations when you accidentally touch something, I have never been. Wheel input exposure compensation, and shooting mode is tight enough – perhaps they can scroll themselves somewhere in the bag. The camera responds to the more slowly – to get used to the built-in zoom lens in which the focal length changing smoothly and gradually, unlike interchangeable lenses, where just one quick turn of the ring. Zooming is also accompanied by a not too pleasant (but not too loud) sound, but I think it is a trifle.


Menu on the camera is horizontally oriented and contains four main sections, each of which is several pages. The organization is very simple and easy, even a novice user will hardly confused. The menu is not large, as in professional cameras, so remember where to find the necessary settings that will not be difficult. The interface is completely Russified. In addition to the main, the camera has a quick menu button “Q”, it contains the most popular functions. Grid quick menu is displayed on the screen directly over the image.

Wireless capabilities

Like most modern cameras, G5 X Mark II has the ability to connect to a computer or mobile device via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. I want to mention the pleasure of working with the camera lens. Still a great focal range and the ability to obtain a natural blur in the frame are expensive, and this is an area where smartphones still significantly lagging behind. Despite the big sensor size, the lens speed helps to get beautiful bokeh, thanks to which images look dimensional and “professional.”


In addition to the full auto mode for the novice user will be interested in the SCN mode, where you can manually select the type of the scene and thus “tell” the camera what settings are better to install. There are 13 types of scene: portrait, portrait, skin smoothing, panoramic shot, panning shot, food, portrait on the background of the stars, starry sky, star trail, time-lapse movies of the stars, handheld night, HDR backlight shooting fireworks with vivid colors. The difference in colors is obvious, the first shot actually looks better. Therefore, if you are a novice user, try not to be restricted to mode “auto”: I don’t understand manual settings, you can improve the result.

In the picture on the left applied the “HDR backlight camera made 3 pictures and merged them into one. Because of this, we can clearly see the detail in the shadows. However, please note that removing this mode of moving people, you can get artifacts in the form of “translucent” limbs or twofold entities. This mode is best for stationary subjects. The second picture was taken in fully automatic mode — it is too dark and uninformative.

Mode “a portrait against the background stars” is not necessarily used for its intended purpose (i.e. shooting stars). It is perfect for a photo shoot in the city at night. The essence of the regime — the combination of built-in flash and long exposure, allowing the background details, while maintaining the sharpness on the model. You can experiment with visual effects by moving the camera while shooting, and get the original footage.

In addition, Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II has a set of artistic filters. On the wheel of selecting a shooting mode it is indicated by two intersecting circles. I believe that the camera of Amateur level effects is not enough — an inexperienced user just might be interesting to experiment with filters and thus to make their staff more diverse. There are a total of eleven filters: grainy b/W, blurred background, soft focus, fisheye effect, watercolor, toy camera effect, miniature effect and HDR four.

Some of the effects are realized not too successfully, for example simulated watercolor on watercolor does not like, and I find it hard to think of a situation in which such an effect would be appropriate:

But in the filter “grainy b/W” I just fell in love. Imitation of old black-and-white film is on many modern cameras, but Canon’s implementation of I especially liked. The images are really high contrast and very grainy, an effect (albeit, no doubt, on the fan) is great for shooting contrast graphic scenes and genre frames. Also pay attention to the built-in neutral density filter (ND) which can help in scenes with a large brightness difference and when shooting video. Such options, by the way, deprived of his main competitor, the PowerShot G5 X Mark II – Sony RX100 VII.

Be prepared for the fact that the PowerShot G5 Canon X Mark II — the camera is quite slow, in particular it applies to the speed of blending effects. Will have to wait a few seconds to see the results and continue shooting. Smartphones in this regard, as a rule, “nimble”, a professional camera — even more so.

Shooting in RAW, processing the shots

Perhaps the RAW format seems too complicated for some users G5 X Mark II, but to master it very quickly. The beauty of the format is that you can influence basic image adjustments — exposure, white balance and more — after the fact. More opportunities for the correction of the picture to produce better output. To handle the basic level in the camera menu select “Processing RAW images”. Is a convenient option if you want to send the picture directly to your smartphone and publish it, but first need to fix some drawback — for example, to make the colors more warm. Processing on the computer in a special program (I use Adobe Camera Raw) gives you more scope for correction and creativity. Let’s look at a few pictures, which is not the best way to look at the original version, and try to add them even more attractive.

The first picture was taken in the evening, when it starts to get dark, but the sky is still fairly bright. Because of this, the frame is formed by a large difference in brightness. The lower part dusky, and the sky came out almost white, overexposed. Due to processing managed to return the balance to my pleasant surprise, the supply of information in the lights from G5 X Mark II has been very good! The color on all parts of the sky were saved. Also appeared information in the shadows. Lightening of shadows contributed to the emergence of a small noise, but it is visible if strongly to get accustomed.

In the frame there is one light source — the window, the greater part of the space is in deep shade, which is read bad atmosphere. Here for the manifestation of parts had to drastically lighten the shadows and raise the overall exposure that led to the emergence of a strong noise. Admittedly, for this story, it is not so critical, because even in some way emphasizes the texture of ancient wall paintings. But in other situations this noise can ruin the shot. The main problem, however, was achieved — the dynamic range of the image able to expand without serious damage to its quality.

The possibilities of the RAW format for Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II is very pleased. The main problem is the noise when brightening shadows, but in varying degrees it is typical for all cameras. The nature of the noise is relatively pleasant, monochrome and sometimes reminiscent of film grain. If you lighten the shade is not too radical, in my eyes he is not thrown.
