Review of the smartphone Honor Pro 30+: everything goes according to plan
Huawei/Honor continue to release smartphones as heap and massively, as in the era before the American sanctions. Everything goes according to plan, including the release of a “budget” flagship without Google Mobile Services.
Them on the Russian market at once three: Honor Pro 30+, Honor 30 Honor and 30S. One would assume that they relate to each other as P40 Pro Huawei, Huawei and Huawei P40 P40 lite, but it’s not. “Compact” versions and devices with a similar name, but cheaper by 20-30
Honor Pro 30+ against the background of two younger brothers looks alone is a real analogue of Huawei P40 Pro with some simplifications. Talk among other things about how they are critical.

Design, ergonomics and software
Honor 30 Pro+ directly follows the example of Huawei P40 Pro is a premium design in understanding Huawei: taking into account last year’s trends, but minus the mistakes made in Pro 30 Mate, where has disappeared the physical volume key, and gone wrong. Glass front and back, radically curved display, the edge of metal, window frontalka is cut in the center of the status bar. Here — double frontalka, and this is one of the most important signs of the times: the grain planted last year, Samsung Galaxy S10+, seedlings all around the world.
Rear panel, if you choose the black version (in China also available similar in performance, but green), quite common — beveled edge, frosted glass, camera, sensors and flash, Packed in a black box with noble-looking markings. Not bad, but nothing more.
But the silver version (Titanium Silver) looks very cool. The inscription “Honor” in the whole of the back panel may seem to some to be too radical, but it is at least unusual, and as a maximum — fresh and appropriate. It is in the spirit of the latest trends in the fashion world — and that it thus enters the world of gadgets, very cool. But, probably correctly, that of the three versions, only one performed exactly.
Honor Pro 30+, as adopted today, a huge gadget that even fits in your pocket, but felt it all her almost seven inches. To hold in your hand is not easy, but we already get used to this. Thanks to the matte back he held in his hand a little more confident than glossy predecessors. But to crawl away from the table, if you put it back carefully enough, can. Be careful and better package the smartphone in a case, the transparent silicone is included in the package. In addition, it will help to avoid spots on the back, which she inevitably covered. Glass is delicate in this respect, the material and the oleophobic coating helps only partly.
One of the features that distinguish Honor Pro 30+ from Huawei P40 Pro (it is necessary to divide the more expensive and less expensive gadgets), a lack of Honor claimed for serious moisture protection standards. There is only splash protection IP54 – with no mini-Jack, of course. It is clear that arguments about the necessity of getting rid of the analog connector for the best protection from external influences was only an invention of Apple. But now hard to sell their wireless headsets and try without much need classic connector not to remember.
Another difference from Huawei P40 Pro is rather a plus. Instead of the built-in display panel piezoelectric dynamics there is a regular, dynamic, below the top line. Not so premium, but so the phone got stereo sound, whereas Huawei P40 Pro content with a monophonic external speaker. Such cases.
The fingerprint scanner is still built into the screen — here it is optical and works so-so. Stability and speed it is no different, which is a little strange, yet Huawei/Honor already has positive experience in the use and configuration of such sensors. In Honor of 30 Pro+ it works on the three — well, maybe a plus, but no more. I had to duplicate the scanner, a facial recognition system, which, however, without additional sensors. Using a picture with the front camera, without depth map, and the lights in the dark is only through the screen.

Amazing stories about life without Google we are in the last six months told so many times that it no longer can. So briefly, with links: Yes, there is Android 10 with a great UI shell Magic 3.1 (almost not changed EMUI 10.1, but for Honor), in which there is no Google Play and related software. To buy and download apps are offered either at the company store AppGallery, where there is, to put it mildly, not all, or using third-party services like Pure or APK by AppGo. But you have to be prepared for the fact that some software and not work — in many sewn access the Google services (like Google payment systems), and at this stage, errors are inevitable. Honor Pro 30+ tries very hard and gives an experience close to normal, but, alas, not complete. Something you will miss. Although Huawei is trying very hard to quickly reduce the damage from the American sanctions — for example, in Russia already it works contactless payment “Wallet” available in AppGallery; it successfully replaces the missing Google Pay.
Display and sound
Honor Pro 30+ has got OLED screen with a diagonal of 6.57 inches and a resolution of 2340 × 1080 pixels — a Quad HD Ghost developers is not enough. However, there is nothing particularly wrong in this — the pixel density is still at a good level: 392 ppi is still higher than the vaunted Retina HD, though not up to the current flagship iPhone (UV-f-f, I wrote it — now there are other iPhones in addition to the flagship). The pixelation on the fonts won’t notice, but when playing back content in 4K resolution, you can feel a slight shortage. And it is necessary to note that this is the first Honor (from the number sold outside of China — was still Honor Magic2) with a screen of organic light-emitting diode.
The display can operate in enhanced mode to 90 Hz frequency can be enabled in the settings.
Measured maximum level of brightness without increasing when auto-tuning is 439 CD/m2 for OLED is tolerable, although I would like higher. The sun image can be seen well, but the colors fade.
Screen settings familiar to devices on EMUI 10/Magic UI 3.1 — there are customizable Always-On Display and a dark theme, you can set the size of fonts, the resolution (flexible, Full HD or HD), to hide the dark fill the entire top or leave double eye frontally in the area of the status bar, and activate the e-books mode — in this case, the screen goes to black and white and as “warming”. Color can be adjusted by selecting from two preset settings (“bright” and “normal”), which allowed adjustment of color temperature to your taste. I measured the color with “bright” and “normal” presets in the default color temperature.
In bright mode the color gamut corresponds to the standard DCI-P3 with some offset. Adequate gamma — 2,22 with more or less normal curves. The color temperature is markedly improved — the curve is very smooth at 7,500 K. the Average deviation of DeltaE for the extended Color Checker palette (shades of gray + a wide variety of colour shades) is 4.25 at a rate of 3.00.
In normal mode color gamut corresponds to the standard sRGB, the average gamma a bit lower than in the bright mode (2,11), color temperature very close to the standard (6 500 K). But the deviation DeltaE scale Color Checker still goes beyond norms of 4.02, and the blame for this primarily just expanded coverage. Screen Honor Pro 30+ is good, but not great — color accuracy a little lacking.
As I wrote above, Honor Pro 30+ has got stereo speakers — and this senior has surpassed the flagship Huawei/Honor, Huawei P40 Pro. They sound fine, but the title of gourmet in the acoustic plan of the smartphone Honor Pro 30+ is not intended to, by default, by the way, only lower speaker works in stereo smartphone switches when you flip to horizontal orientation. The same applies to the sound in the headphones — the wire can be connected only via adapter, without wires, everything is fine (profiles aptX, aptX HD and LDAC supported), any problems I noticed. The Honor Pro 30+ acts confidently.
Hardware and performance
Honor 30 Pro+ received hardware platform HiSilicon Kirin 990 5G that we’ve seen in 30 View Honor Pro and Huawei P40 Pro. Its main components: eight cores (two ARM Cortex-A76 with a clock frequency of 2.86 GHz + two ARM Cortex-A76 with a clock speed of 2.09 GHz + four Junior core ARM Cortex-A55 with a clock frequency of 1.86 GHz), graphics in the form of a 16-core ARM Mali-G76, a special module for operations related to machine learning (NPU), and Yes, as you can tell from the title platform, 5G modem. The platform is executed at the 7-nanometer process using EUV-lithography.
Current flagship Kirin is always a little weaker than the current platforms of other manufacturers, but 990 in 5G version is very good. Even with 8 GB of RAM LPDDR4X (there are 12-Gigabyte version, but in Russia it is not officially sold) in synthetic tests Honor 30 Pro to withstand the competition very confidently and sometimes even frankly surprising. This is the first smartphone in the history of our tests, which has earned more than 500 thousand points in AnTuTu 8.
In practice, performance is enough to keep the system running quickly and smoothly, and all games run at max without dropping framerate. Power is quite adequate competitor to the OnePlus 8 Pro – the usual leader in “podplavleniya” contest. It should be noted that all measurements were done when you activate a special performance mode in which the mobile actively eats the battery, but running on the limit. For demanding applications it is necessary to include it manually — the idea is that the smartphone should be able to do it myself, but, for example, when running benchmarks it never did, working in default mode, and issuing a lower number.
No problems at Honor Pro 30+ and was throttling, unlike its predecessor, Honor 20 Pro, the new device frequencies under loads almost do not fall: when installing a productive mode to test CPU Throttling Test frequency fell by only 8 %, and in the beginning of the session, then recovered to close to the limit level. That is in fact the cooling system fully cope with their responsibilities. The average performance level was 204 GIPS.
Honor Pro 30+ comes in a single version by the volume of built-in storage: 256 GB flash UFS 3.0. You can add as much using the card NM (Huawei proprietary format, while the Chinese in the selection of such memory cards no one has joined).
Communications and wireless communications
At 5G, it is clear — the smartphone can do that, but it still does not help. With 4G standard situation — Honor does not specify a limit on the speed with which able to transmit data built-in LTE modem, but it is supported frequencies — and it’s all good. In practice (limited isolation) no problems. There are two slots for cards nano-SIM, both of them are “friends” with LTE.
In other wireless modules is felt’s flagship chic: Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax (Yes, supported Wi-Fi 6, which again is technically not in Russia), 5.1 Bluetooth, NFC and navigation module, dual GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo, QZSS, NavIC.
The issue of camera Honor when creating Pro 30+ has accepted Solomonovo the decision: to completely replicate Huawei P40 Pro was not an option to save the elite status of the device, but also to deprive the smartphone is the main trump card in the basic module did not. Lost Honor Pro 30+ is only a special “video”camera, but instead of her standard wide angle module. However, everything in order.
The main camera in quadrangula received sensor Ultra Vision resolution of 50 megapixels and the physical size of 1/1,28″. Individual pixel (combine with four subpixels according to the system of Bayer Quad) reaches a size of 2.44 µm. As in last year’s flagship, uses a system of color filters RYYB, which allows the photosensitive elements to capture more light. With this sensor works lens equivalent to a focal length of 23 mm and aperture of f/1,9. Has optical stabilization and a hybrid AF that combines phase-and contrast (with laser illumination) focusing methods.
By default, the main camera takes pictures with a resolution of 12.5 megapixels, but at any moment you can enable a maximum resolution and to obtain images at 8192 × 6144 dots. Examples — above.
Camera Honor Pro 30+ can shoot as normal with the viewing angle and the advanced, which is achieved due to the camera resolution of 16 megapixels and a lens with a focal length of 18 mm (35 mm equivalent) and aperture of ƒ/2,2. Stars in the sky this module is not enough: and AF in it, and the picture he gives is fairly ordinary in quality, and some extra-wide viewing angle offers — the competition cover a wider area. But with the zoom at Honor Pro 30+ all is well: on the spot a periscope camera resolution of 8 megapixels and a lens with EGF 125 mm aperture f/3.4 to this module we saw on last year’s flagship Huawei P30 Pro. It provides a five times optical zoom ten times hybrid. Possible pyatidesyatiletnie digital zoom. The quality of the image at five times zoom is quite decent, the main thing — not to expect too much of him in the night, there telephotometer passes. Doesn’t help brand the night mode. The fourth camera has a resolution of 2 megapixels is a depth sensor, it is used in portrait mode.
When shooting at night on the main (50-megapixel) camera has revealed the same feature as that of Huawei P40/P40 Pro – it gives a better picture in standard mode, rather than in a special night, that is, multi exposure for 3-6 seconds is not going to benefit. Amazing, the image looks smoother dynamic range and brighter in the shadows — and the manufacturer with March apparently worked on software, and now the picture looks more natural, plus more not found defective images. The main camera the night of Honor is Pro 30+ takes consistently good — in this respect it’s definitely the best smartphone in its class. On wide angle module, you can also make a decent shot with poor lighting, but at telephotometer, again, no.
The neural network is connected to the shooting process by the user — they are disabled by default. Working “artificial intelligence” to Honor the usual way — increases saturation selectively tightened light/shadow. HDR works by default, although again, you can connect more rough and powerful version of the extended dynamic range by selecting it from the list of available options.
In portrait mode there are three focal distances that allow you to shoot both full-length and waist portraits and close-UPS without distorting the proportions of the face. The background is blurred quality, with almost no artifacts at object edges.
Set of filters when shooting has not changed for several years. Examples of the filters above.
The available macro mode, and with the two focal distances. How exactly it is implemented — is not clear, but it definitely uses the main module and not just wide-angle; autofocus is available. Quality macro photography is very high.
The camera app also not changed. Looks neat, the logic arrangement of elements is excellent, the feature set is good (and can be in RAW to remove, and panoramas to glue), but the zoom control, especially when video recording, is implemented poorly. To switch between the options of fixed angle and zoom uncomfortable (need to get to the club on a long scale — when you defeat break into the digital zoom area), and the video is simply impossible — only to pull the slider on the scale, constantly promahivayas past the desired value.

In the video Honor Pro 30+ to show yourself worthy, but don’t take heights senior Huawei. The smartphone can shoot 4K video at up to 60 frames per second with the running stabilization, Full HD stabilizer is really effective. Some peculiarities in the night video Honor Pro 30+ is not showing, slow motion at HD resolution is possible at up to 1920 frames per second (not crazy 7680 fps, like 30 Mate Pro or P40). In the process of shooting you can zoom the image but the quality using the zoom drops significantly, the smartphone is not switched to telephotometer using digital zoom only. In place and already familiar with the application of artificial intelligence, which distinguishes the subject from the background and blur the background or loosing its color. Overall good oculoplasty level, but it is noticeable that Honor Pro 30+ then cut relative to the flagship Huawei.
Double front facing camera consists of a 32-megapixel module (Quad Bayer — the final images get a resolution of 8 megapixels) with a lens aperture of ƒ/2.0 without autofocus and flash and a wide angle module with a resolution of 8 megapixels and aperture of ƒ/2,2. In terms of frontally Honor Pro 30+ even surpassed Huawei P40 Pro – in regard to photos available with two focal lengths with background blur. Video — no 4K video shooting we’ve missed. If this a serious flaw — decide.
Honor Pro 30+ has got a battery capacity of 15.2 W·h (4000 mAh, 3.8 V), that may seem insufficient for a smartphone with a screen of six and a half inches. But it’s still six and a half inch organic light-emitting diodes — so with a dark theme if you have activated the auto brightness smartphone confidently holds a charge for days, even with 90-Gerasim regime. If to Unscrew brightness on a maximum and to use the gadget in the tail and mane, the battery is fully discharged for 7-8 hours. On the autonomy of Honor Pro 30+ more or less repeats Huawei P40 Pro.
In our traditional test playing Full HD-video on maximum brightness with the included Wi-Fi and auto-update, not more or less, and repeats. This, of course, a coincidence, but symbolic — the result is identical, 753 minutes. And this is a very good result.
For charging current USB Type-C (USB 3.0), running proprietary quick charging power of 40 W, which allows to charge the battery in less than an hour. There is support for wireless charging power to 27 watts. Also Honor 30 Pro+ knows himself to charge other gadgets without wires, however, gives not so high power is only 5 watts. But in order to charge fast headphones, enough.
The flagship Honor for many years looked a little mockery of Huawei sub-brand on big brother — comes out spring P-series, all clapping their hands and waiting for the license plate Honor (7, 8, 9) to get the same, but twice cheaper. With the launch of Pro-series (starting with the P20 Pro) the situation has changed, and senior Honor become more actively with senior Huawei breed characteristics, so as not to step on the throat and create the same image of the company able to successfully sell smartphones premium.
But Honor Pro 30+ has come as if from those times when internal competition and cannibalism within grocery stores, the Chinese company was held in high esteem. Very similar design, but with a particular style in a silver version with big logo, plus the performance at the highest level. Large curved OLED screen with a 90-Gerasim mode, but Yes, with lower resolution. Equally powerful hardware platform, the fastest charging.
A little compromise is in the camera — there is also quadrupedal with identical 50-megapixel main sensor, but with a more simple wide-angle or telecomhouse. But frontalka with its ability to switch between the two viewing angles, even more perfect. As a precaution, so we understand what the flagship plasmanate also offered a less powerful reversible charging and splash protection instead of protection, but it is, in my opinion, quite detail. However, Honor is Pro 30+, quite a huge price difference between it and Huawei P40 Pro not.
As for comparisons with competitors from other brands, the situation is normal for Huawei/Honor in 2020 — technologically Honor 30+ at least equal to the rivals, and even surpasses them, but here comes the problem with the Google services. It is literally every week is becoming less acute, but yet not so much that you do not pay attention to it, — Honor Pro 30+ today cannot provide the same seamless and completely devoid of dancing experience like smartphones on a regular “Android”.
- interesting design (especially in silver);
- great camera — both rear and front;
- flagship performance;
- very fast both wired and wireless charging;
- high-quality OLED display.
- no Google Mobile Services;
- a decent quality night shots just for the camera with the usual angle;
- no moisture protection;
- slippery body;
- no mini-Jack.
