Review Huawei P40 Pro+: a smartphone with a record-breaking zoom
The Huawei P40 Pro review I lamented the fact that this year the Chinese company has done without revolutions in the field of mobile photography. I got excited, of course — just a sudden movement of the Huawei left for the flagship of the flagship. This year flagships from Huawei, in the manner of Samsung (S20, S20+ S20 Ultra) and Apple (iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max), three. Two came at the same time, when it was announced in March. We wrote about both — how about a P40 Pro and Pro compact and very convenient P40. The third was late in entering the market until July and gave the world a new achievement for a smartphone, a tenfold optical zoom.
We’ve already seen phones with 10x option in the camera app, but the question was about “hybrid” zoom together with the lens equivalent to a focal length of 120 to 150 mm and smart crop. Losses in picture quality was inevitable. Huawei P40 Pro+ received a special module with periscope optics with an unprecedented focal length of 240 mm. And less serious zoom to sacrifice did not — for the sake of that P40 Pro+ has a unit of five chambers with four different focal lengths (the fifth — TOF-sensor to work correctly in portrait mode).
The list of differences P40 Pro+ from P40 Pro, in fact, ends with minute attention to detail: a slightly modified design, added the possibility of wireless charging with a power of 40 W, and a version with the SSD at 512 Gbytes. Therefore we offer you the shortened version of the review focusing on the camera.

Design, ergonomics and software
At first glance the Huawei Huawei Pro P40 and P40 Pro+ is nearly impossible to discern the lines and techniques are the same, dimensions are the same. But some details still changed: a smartphone with a curved on all sides and not just on the sides of the screen, and a ceramic coating instead of glass on the back and sides.
To distinguish ceramics from glass impossible, as well as to the touch, but the smartphone gained more than 20 grams. Consider it an advantage — I don’t know. Also don’t know what to say about its fragility, but would recommend the gadget in any case, just hide in the supplied silicone case — striking luster will fade, but will be less shaking each time when the smartphone will slide with some surface and sliding it will be inevitable: it is slippery and the front and rear, and even the edges are curved.
The Duo of front-facing camera with depth sensor inscribed in the surface of the display in its corner. Looks good and not eaten off the status bar too much space. Block the rear camera is assembled on a rectangular plate and heavily favored over the body, which is to be expected with the periscope in this module.
Two color variations: white and black. To have fun with colors in the case with my older smartphone, this time Huawei did not, all strictly and carefully. It might be, but the black version we had for testing, looks noble. In Russia, by the way, only comes it white P40 Pro+ we have not reached.
Functional elements are quite familiar: key lock/power and volume controls on the right side, the USB Type-C and the speaker on the bottom. From the top we see the light sensor that just does not fit on the front panel. Mini-Jack no, the housing is dust – and waterproof according to the IP68 standard. Also, there is no speaker — is used instead of the piezoelectric element. Comfort during telephone conversations is not affected, but deprives the smartphone stereo.
In addition to the facial recognition system, which is due to the IR sensor works safely in any light without the screen backlight, there is on-screen fingerprint scanner — optical sensor. He copes with its tasks quite well, but still slightly worse than that of Xiaomi Mi 10, where at the moment it is noticed on-screen reference sensor — primarily due to the high quality tactile feedback, which is missing here. However, the response speed of the sensor is acceptable, stability is enviable — irritation this sensor is not exactly.

In Huawei P40 Pro+ 10 is Android without Google services (more precisely, as expressed by the manufacturer in a positive way — with the services of Huawei). There are a few materials on the subject: an overview of Huawei’s Mobile Services, the experience of interacting with a P40 Pro without the ability to put Google Mobile Services, the review of applications for a healthy lifestyle from the App Gallery. And with each update EMUI 10 adds new features that enable you to live without GMS a bit more comfortable. In P40 Pro+ will provide a search string service Petal Search. With it, applications are sought not only in the company store AppGallery, but also all the possible third-party services like Pure APK and Aptoide, or even on the official websites of these apps, where are downloaded apk files. Familiar with Google Play, the user will feel weird, and earn on a smartphone not all downloaded apps (many games connected to the payment system of Google, which is not supported), but for more or less experienced “of androidology” to make friends with P40 Pro+ is not difficult.
We would add that the problem with the lack of Google Pay offset by the development of domestic service “Wallet” and adding payment system SberPay.
Display, hardware, wireless modules
In Huawei P40 Pro+ installed exactly the same display as in Huawei P40 Pro: OLED diagonal 6.58 inch and atypical resolution, 2640 × 1200 pixels; pixel density of 441 ppi. The screen is curved on all sides, but this does not affect the experience of its use, the smartphone often tries to slip out of hand, but everything else was as usual.
The main change in comparison with last year flagships — supports refresh rates of 90 Hz. But, in contrast to P40 Pro, here is a high frequency and is set by default, to toggle the gadget to force more “smooth” mode is not necessary. Battery is consumed more actively, but I would not say that defenetaly mode affects it too.
Other parameters of the display is quite familiar: the “sandwich” classic, with a really good oleophobic coating, viewing angles are available. Huawei announces the compliance HDR10 and color coverage DCI P3. Instrumental measurements display P40 Pro+ we did not spend — unlike the P40 Pro in this respect, no, you can go to the overview of this device and read there more if curious. In short — the flagship Huawei installed on the actual performance and quality customized display.
But the sound — nothing outstanding. Mini-Jack no, no, that’s okay, but the lack of stereo speakers for your smartphone for 100 thousand — it is not. With the transmission of sound without wires is no problem, but to stand out and here it is impossible — all is responsible for transferring high-resolution data via Bluetooth profiles are known, they are available at much more affordable smartphones.
In Huawei P40 Pro+ is installed hardware platform HiSilicon Kirin 990 5G. It consists of eight processor cores (two ARM Cortex-A76 with a clock frequency of 2.86 GHz + two ARM Cortex-A76 with a clock speed of 2.09 GHz + four Junior core ARM Cortex-A55 with a clock frequency of 1.86 GHz), graphics ARM Mali-G76 MP16 and a special module for operations related to machine learning (NPU). The platform is made with the use of 7-nanometer technological process with EUV-lithography.
Performance Huawei P40 Pro+ is a bit inferior to competitors with Qualcomm Snapdragon 865/865 Plus and with the Samsung Exynos 990, but this defeat still only “on paper”. Any application (if supported by the system without GMS) will run on the smartphone without any problems, open quickly, the most demanding games run at high frame rate. But stock for many years to come no.
With the throttle case at Huawei P40 Pro+ are a little worse than P40 Pro, but it is tempting to write it off as a measurement error due to the almost identical toppings. The difference is in any case small: for CPU Throttling Test demonstrated a decrease of the frequency to 82% of maximum, with an average performance 191 GIPS.
There are versions P40 Pro+ with 8/256 GB memory, and 8/512 GB — Russia officially comes only second. And this is logical — if offered the ultra-expensive smartphone, then pack it to the max. Memory capacity can be further increased if, instead of the second SIM card to equip a smartphone with a memory card NM with a capacity of up to 256GB. Flash here, by the way, the fresh — UFS 3.1, but the RAM LPDDR4X; it is just the flaw Kirin 990, not working with DDR5.
With wireless modules in order. There is even a 5G, and the modem is not disabled — if you find a network with a supported range, you can try the new generation connection where we have a pandemic has begun… according to a particularly gifted public. But in Russia, talking about 5G is not coming, and with 4G the smartphone runs freely and easily — all the right bands are supported, the connection speed does not cause problems, although stability had some claim. Wi-Fi tethering can work with wifi 6, Bluetooth module here is version 5.1, there is NFC and navigation module with dual GPS as well as GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo, QZSS, NavIC.
By itself, the five-chamber unit Huawei P40 Pro+ does not cause some trepidation — the four cameras we have seen previously, either in Huawei P40/P40 Pro, or even Huawei Mate 30 Pro.
The main module received sensor Ultra Vision (color filters RYYB) resolution of 50 megapixels (used Quad Bayer) and the physical size of 1/1,28″ — today it is the largest sensor in a smartphone (Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, for example, 1/1,33″). Individual pixel (combine with four subpixels according to the system of Bayer Quad) reaches a size of 2.44 µm. This sensor works with a lens with an equivalent focal length of 23 mm and aperture of f/1,9. Has optical stabilization and phase detection autofocus, very grippy and fast.
Two cameras moved here directly from Mate 30 Pro. For wide angle meets 40-megapixel (scheme Quad Bayer) sensor physical size 1/1,54-inch format 3:2, which operates the lens aperture of ƒ/1.8 and an equivalent focal length of 18 mm, the autofocus is, but no stabilizer. It outputs 10-megapixel images. For portraits and zoom meets the 8-megapixel camera with a lens with an equivalent focal length of 80 mm and a maximum aperture of f/2.4 and stabilization and phase detection autofocus. Finally, the TOF-camera to work with an artificial bokeh.
The main interest is not the fusion of ideas presented in the previous flagship, and the fifth camera: 8 megapixel, phase detection autofocus, optical stabilizer and a periscope lens with an equivalent focal length of 240 mm and maximum aperture of f/4,4. We have seen a tenfold zoom before, including on smartphones Huawei, but in “hybrid” format with quality loss. Here there are no losses — that three-times zoom that tenfold in good light give about the same picture: a clear, detailed, with natural colors. Varies the behavior of the zoom-ins in low light: at dusk, both are quite efficient, but at night ultrazoom is not enough intensity, and strongly. Even the night mode will not help — with a tenfold zoom night shoot nothing.
Also, the smartphone 100 x digital zoom — and Yes, it is, of course, primarily marketing, but the picture quality (relative, of course, quality) of the flagship Huawei still walked around the flagship Samsung: apparently, for the sake of comparison, a frontal garden and Gorodishe.
About night mode for zoom cameras I have already said, in General can only repeat what was said in the materials on Huawei P40 and P40 Pro, the next generation of flagships Huawei fine night shoots, often without the night mode with its multi-frame bonding. At dusk or at dawn picture is definitely going to be more natural and right without activating it. Under very low light — Yes, he can help.
Portrait mode has not changed, it ten times zoom is not used. As always with Huawei, there are two options: choose “normal” blur background with the ability to change the degree of the blur and select “aperture” after the fact — or portrait mode without selecting the aperture, but with a set of blur effects and adjustable beautification. It available in three focal lengths to choose from, suitable for the growth of the portraits and for waist-length or close-UPS. “Wash background” P40 Pro+ is excellent, skin tone transmits high quality, with a sharpness no problem.
Camera app the same thing — is nicely decorated, but the implementation of the zoom slider (which is very important for a smartphone with such characteristics) is poor. I note that macro mode is not selected in a separate paragraph, you can rely on the fact that the plot is as “macro” define neural network assistant (about him I didn’t say a word, but everyone here will be a repetition said many times before).
In the aggregate quality — coverage of focal lengths, the possibilities for shooting in the dark, working with color and light with perfect light (the first place to evaluate is the dynamic range, but it is necessary to tell and about the correct, as a rule, the white balance) available to the photographer options — Huawei P40 Pro+ today occupies the highest rung in the competition of smartphones in the field of photography.

But video Huawei P40 Pro+ offers nothing new. The smartphone can shoot 4K video at up to 60 frames per second with the running of stabilization, and Full HD video with the unification of neighboring pixels in the group, creating the light-sensitive elements with a size of 4.48 µm, which provides a great sensitivity at night video footage and sharper images in daylight. However, the quality will be higher, if you do not raise the frequency higher than 30 frames per second.
When recording movies the available adjustment of focal length from wide angle to approximately twice the zoom it is almost lossless quality, then the image quality is severely compromised — in zoom camera smartphone is not switched, use the digital zoom. In place and already familiar with the application of artificial intelligence, which distinguishes the subject from the background and blur the background or loosing its color. There is the slow motion mode in Full HD, you can shoot at up to 960 frames per second and 720p at up to 7680 frames per second.
Double front facing camera consists of a 32-megapixel module (Quad Bayer — the final images get a resolution of 8 megapixels) with a lens aperture of ƒ/2.2, and without autofocus and flash, and again the TOF camera (available in portrait mode). Quality selfie not reproach. As in P40 Pro, the frontalka you can write 4K-video.
Huawei P40 Pro+ received the battery capacity of 15.96 WH (4200 mAh, 3.8 V). In P40 Pro battery of the same capacity was enough for a light day, but the higher count was already hard. With P40 Pro+, the situation is slightly more complicated. On the one hand, autonomy has generally improved. Hard to say, so that: probably better running software, but a smartphone lives quietly day even under heavy load, especially if you activate dark mode, and to trust to the automatic determination of brightness. On the other hand, are unfounded, the failures of the smartphone may begin suddenly very hot and eat battery with some unnatural appetite; it happens infrequently, plus of a disaster helps to restart, but we must bear this problem in mind.
In our updated test playing Full HD-video on maximum brightness with the included Wi-Fi and auto-update, the result was as expected good — 14 hours.
For charging current USB Type-C (USB 3.1) runs proprietary system Huawei quick charging Super Charge 40 watts, which allows to charge the battery in less than an hour. The icing on the cake — the ability to use wireless chargers of the same capacity. In theory, the smartphone is charged wirelessly with the same speed as the wire, where the charge from 0 to 100 % takes less than an hour. In practice, to find the wireless charger such power, it is necessary to try very much. Able Huawei P40 Pro+ to charge devices without wires myself, but with a power of 27 watts.
Huawei P40 Pro+ is designed for a very narrow, but at the same time as demanding a layer of users — those who are willing to pay big money for the best quality photography on the market. This P40 Pro+ is ready to provide — complete with missing Google products (Huawei is actively working on leveling the negative effects, but to eliminate them completely is impossible), ceramic case, reasonably powerful hardware, curved on all sides-screen and record powerful wireless charging.
In fact, you get the same Huawei P40 Pro, but with a tenfold optical zoom and drive more volume. These are the options 35 thousand rubles — up to you.
