Overview of smartphone Xiaomi Redmi Note Pro 8: the fires of ambition

From the first smartphone with four cameras was last year’s Samsung Galaxy A9 and there’s this scattering of the two lenses are absolutely meaningless mediocre post-processing, and the quality of the cameras themselves. It was a smartphone for 40 thousand roubles for this programme. Today, Quad-smartphone no surprise, there was already a vehicle with six modules — Nokia 9 PureView (to honor his memory and will award a separate prize for the most imminent oblivion). But Quad smartphone in 17 thousand roubles? With the main module on a 64 megapixel (still in our test was only one model with a similar realme XT), with 6.5-inch display, battery 4500 mAh, and, for the first time in the history of official sales under the brand Redmi in Russia — with NFC (technically the first Redmi with NFC was K20 Pro, but we have it sold under the name Xiaomi Mi 9T).

On the one hand — nothing new for Xiaomi, we have become accustomed to the fact that the smartphones under this brand pushing its own characteristics, which seem at times impossible for its price range. On the other — still impressive. But Xiaomi Mi A3 is also in theory was impressive, but in fact he had quite a lot of pitfalls. Maybe with Redmi Note 8 Pro, the same story?

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro – information about the hardware according to the application CPU Z

Design, ergonomics and software

In the first look at the Redmi Note 8 Pro, I already wrote about the fact that it is not only very powerful, to be expected, but also unexpectedly cute smartphone. Usually, however, the devices of the family Redmi Note is bulky and unattractive. They choose not heart, and mind.

Note 8 Pro is also very bulky — from 6.53-inch display, even with the minimal framework (but they are really quite small), it is difficult otherwise. It’s big and heavy (200 grams), the device — in such moments before, would have written “this is a men’s gadget” — but the popularity of the iPhone Xs shovel Max and his successor iPhone 11 Pro Max the female audience warns against such hasty conclusions. This is a common modern smartphone.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, the front panel is almost entirely occupied by a display, with a small cutout for the front facing camera on top; there is also an earpiece

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, back panel: large unit with three cameras and a fingerprint scanner (heavily favored over the case and collects dust liberally around the rim), near a small module with microcameras and single led flash

But it’s a big smartphone, not without a certain elegance. Especially fresh looks, of course, the white version, about which I wrote earlier, with its silver bezel. But green Redmi Note 8 Pro good. Both the front and back panel covered with tempered glass Gorilla Glass 5, bezel plastic, but to recognize it, only noticing that on the perimeter there are no jumpers to antennas. To say that it’s the champion in terms of beauty, not even in his class, he loses Honor 9X in this regard. But to call the Note 8 Pro ugly or unattractive even my language is not rotated.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, left face: the hybrid slot for SIM-cards and memory cards

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, right side: the power key/lock and the volume/shutter release

As with almost any smartphone with a glass back and curved edges, the Redmi Note 8 Pro – very slick gadget. It is better to pack it in your bag — you can buy “Ali” some of the original can and the base to limit — it is crystal clear made of silicone. And I must say that tactile Redmi Note 8 Pro is not very pleasant — despite the fact that here and on the front and on the back panel glass, the feeling, shall we say, not “flagship”.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, the top face: a microphone and infrared port

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, bottom side: microphone, mini-Jack, USB Type-C, main speaker

Set of functional elements – very traditional for an Android smartphone: the two keys on the starboard side and the fingerprint scanner on the back panel, infrared sensor and microphone on the top edge of the USB Type-C and mini-Jack (Oh yeah) with a microphone and the main speaker on the bottom. No one is surprised, for the better, the Redmi Note 8 Pro — not experimental gadget and thing, designed for the most consumers with very clear expectations.

The problem of “bezremontnoy” also solved very easy way — using cut-“droplets”. My attitude varies between “well familiar” and “how tired”. Will give you the opportunity to formulate their own. The neck is in any case small and not too annoying, in addition to the front camera is a tiny status led.

The fingerprint scanner is inscribed into a single unit with three camera lenses (one on side, next to the flash). Place, in principle, is normal, it is right where it should be when using a capacitive sensor is directly under the index finger. But to mix it by touch with the camera lens, despite the small dip, it is still possible, though not so simple, as is the case with the Samsung Galaxy S8. So downright “beat five” the creators of the smartphone I can’t. The sensor is good, works quickly and without failures. If you wish you can also connect and face recognition, but it is elective for those who are less worried about security. For the identification of the user is answerable lone front facing camera without a depth sensor.

Working Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro running Android operating system 9 Pie shell MIUI latest version 10.4.5. From what we wrote in the review other Xiaomi this year, shell is characterized primarily by the presence of dark themes. Astrologers have announced the year of dark themes for smartphones — here it is, however, devoid of practical sense, the LCD screen does not allow you to enjoy less power consumption in this mode. She also has one problem in the implementation — there is not only activated to support their apps like Instagram, but also blacken the notification (!) variety of services, including, for example, a mail. With one caveat — the background is dark and the font is not white. Reads the header of the mail received on Gmail, it becomes impossible. The good old tradition Xiaomi messy in the details, to roll out things as they are, and then to fix all updates. MIUI is, of course, the shell is functional and fast, but does not cease podbeshivat these moments. I must say that there is a search engine for apps on your smartphone (and the Internet) — you have to swipe from the bottom edge of the screen.

Display and sound

Compared with Redmi Note Pro 7 “eight” has increased in size, and display size — 6.53 inches vs. 6.3 inches. I wonder when the trend to increase continuously the size of the screen will stop? And will it affect the emergence of a smartphone with a folding screen? Questions to which the answer is no, let’s talk about the practical side of what we already have.

In Redmi Note 8 Pro uses the traditional screen with IPS-matrix resolution 2340 × 1080 pixels and a format 19,5:9. Pixel density — 395 ppi. The figure is not outstanding, but not disappointing, the picture is smooth enough, looks decent. The oleophobic coating is good, viewing angles are available.

The maximum measured brightness of the display Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro amounted to 495 CD/m2. Again, to speak about leadership in the classroom is not necessary, but in fact the problems with using a smartphone on a Sunny day does not arise. Brightness in combination with a polarizing coating missing.

Contrast to IPS-matrix ordinary — 1213:1.

The available settings adjusts the color tone (from cool to warm), but only if you activate automatic setting of the color rendering (which is still illiterate called “contrast”). Also there are modes of “high” or “standard,” “contrast”. I measured the color in the adaptive and standard modes. The measurement was taken in the room with the included bulbs.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, gamma in automatic mode. Yellow – indicators Redmi Note 8 Pro, the dotted reference gamma

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, the color temperature automatically. Blue line – performance of the Redmi Note 8 Pro, the dotted reference temperature

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, color gamut automatically. Gray triangle – coverage of the sRGB triangle coverage Redmi Note 8 Pro

In automatic mode, when the light bulbs is 2.22 gamma with a stable behavior of the curves. Color temperature is too high and unstable — varies in the range from 8 000 to 10 500 K. adapting to external artificial light, the smartphone makes the colors very cold. The color space is slightly wider than sRGB, but to talk seriously about the expanded color spectrum wrong. The average deviation of DeltaE scale Color Checker including a wide range of colors and shades of gray, made up 6.61 at the rate of 3.00 – color accuracy in this mode, the Redmi Note 8 Pro can not boast.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, the gamma in standard mode. Yellow – indicators Redmi Note 8 Pro, the dotted reference gamma

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, the color temperature to “standard” mode. Blue line – performance of the Redmi Note 8 Pro, the dotted reference temperature

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, the color gamut to “standard” mode. Gray triangle – coverage of the sRGB triangle coverage Redmi Note 8 Pro

When you activate the “standard contrast” striking a significant narrowing of the color space, it becomes even less than sRGB, which is a rarity for modern smartphones. The average gamma is 2.21 s, the curves behave a bit more nervously. The colors are warming strongly, but not enough to reach the reference color temperatures (6 500 K) in average temperature of 8 000 K. the Average deviation of DeltaE Color Checker on a scale approaching the norm, but not reaching her was 4.77. In General we can say that the screen is average in all respects: from brightness and contrast to the quality settings.

The same, roughly can be said about the sound quality. 8 in Redmi Note Pro have mini Jack, which makes the smartphone easy to use with wired headphones, but special talents in the sound transmission, he does not possess. With wireless headphones all good: 5.0 supports Bluetooth and aptX, and LDAC, you can count on a maximum (to date) the quality of data transmission. External mono speaker located on the bottom edge and does not overlap with your finger if you hold the gadget in a horizontal position. It is quite loud, and that’s all you can say about him.

Hardware and performance

Xiaomi suddenly put in Redmi Note 8 Pro platform authorship, not Qualcomm, and very rarely occur above the level of ultrabudgetary Mediatek. But the logic of this is: system-on-chip Helio G90T belongs to a class of platforms above the mean and at low (apparently) the purchase price is able to provide the level of performance that will give the Note 8 Pro noticeable advantage over direct competitors.

The platform consists of eight cores: two ARM Cortex-A76 clock frequency of 2.05 GHz operate in the most demanding processes, six ARM Cortex-A55 2.0 GHz responsible for energy efficiency. It’s quite a modern configuration, which allows Redmi Note 8 Pro very to perform well in synthetic tests.

The graphics is fresh subsystem ARM Mali-G76 MC4 clock frequency of 800 MHz. The process — 12 nm. It should be noted that this is the older version of the platform Helio G90, with higher clock frequencies as the main cores, and graphics. It allows you to run on Redmi Note Pro 8 any modern game available for Android – the only limitation will be the framerate in the most demanding of them. I will not mention Redmi Note 8 Pro truly games smartphone, but in its price category is probably the most powerful offer for today. For work with 3D graphics, it beats realme 3 Pro, but to compare them with nothing.

Platform Mediatek could be a pretty good performance, but with the heat and energoeffektivnosti costabile problems. Helio G90T shows remarkable progress. With the throttle at the Redmi Note 8 Pro, in contrast to the same Redmi Note 7, there are no serious problems: Throttling the CPU benchmark Test showed a performance decrease to 83% of maximum, with an average productivity 141 GIPS. It is confident, a good level, with a cooling in the smartphone there are no problems.

In operations with activation of the neural networks Redmi Note 8 Pro is also very good: 12 952 points in Ludashi AI Mark — this may not be the flagship level, but clearly above average. Mediatek learned in “artificial intelligence”.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro has two options for RAM: 6 or 8 GB LPDDR4X. For a smartphone middle class — very much. Non-volatile memory standard UFS2.1 are 64 or 128 GB. Not very many, but the memory can be increased thanks to the microSD card – it is installed instead of the second SLM.

Communications and wireless communications

LTE modem installed in Redmi Note Pro regular 8 — supports LTE Cat.6 with a maximum data download speed of 300 Mbit/s. perhaps you feel a lack of speed, but with the rest of the picture impressive specs, it is a bit dissonant, especially when compared with Redmi Note 7, which has support LTE Cat.12. But it is important that there is all necessary for correct operation of 4G networks in Russia ranges for Xiaomi it is not always the case.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, slot for SIM-cards and/or memory card

With wireless modules full order: Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n (dual-band), infrared, and, Yes, the same NFC – Google Pay is supported. The navigation system works with GPS (including A-GPS), GLONASS, BeiDou and does it efficiently.

Camera

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro has got four chambers, but the really important only one of them — the main one with Samsung ISOCELL sensor Bright GW1 with a resolution of 64 megapixels. This is not the first smartphone with this sensor, which visited us on the test — Redmi ahead realme XT, the review of which was first close experience with a fresh Quad Bayer sensor, with absurdly high resolution.

By default, the same Redmi Note 8 Pro takes off, like we are used to with other smartphones using the system Quad Bayer, with a resolution four times less than 16 MP. The shooting mode is set to limit permission is enabled separately. The sensor is very large for a smartphone — 1/1,7″, which helped to keep the size of the individual pixel unchanged compared to the 48-MP modules — 0.8 mm. The lens is devoid of optical stabilization, but has a fairly high aperture — f/1,9. The main camera is the phase autofocus system.

On the left, 16-megapixel picture, right – picture with a resolution of 64 megapixels

Examples of shooting with 16 and 64 megapixels I have laid out a preliminary review of the Note 8 Pro, so that particular detail I’m not going to stop there. I can only say that is really high detail, no visible aberrations and the ability to use limit resolution in low-light conditions were a surprise, and image processing is performed more efficiently than in the realme XT. Of course, the “real” 60+ megapixels like the camera Sony a7R IV, for example, we are not talking, but it’s a working system. It is worth considering that the size of each file in the solution 9248 × 6936 averages from 14 to 17 MB of memory will get clogged very quickly.

Left to right: shooting at wide angle, standard focal length (the 16mp) with a double zoom

The other three cameras is less remarkable. This wide angle module with 8-megapixel sensor (sensor size — 1/4″, the size of a single pixel of 1.12 microns) and a lens aperture of f/2.2, and which is devoid of focus, a special 2-megapixel camera with aperture f/2.2 and the large pixels (1.7 µm). A fourth camera is needed only for portrait mode is a depth sensor. Shooting wide angle is implemented quite well. Of course, not enough focus, and the detail of the pictures leaves much to be desired, but we need to remember that we’re not talking about a flagship smartphone for 60-70 thousand rubles, and the unit cost 16-18 thousand. In a head-on comparison with a direct competitor 9X Honor that we held recently, you can see a serious advantage of the Note 8 Pro. There’s also the available two-time “hybrid” zoom, which makes the smartphone a 16 megapixel crop from a 64-megapixel images. It turns out well — under difficult or low light similar image lacks detail, but overall it’s a good level.

Macro photography is done in 2 megapixel resolution and will not say that he was impressed with the result. Some particularly small focus distance, the module does not Shine, the detail, and that is logical low, the focus is fixed, the dynamic range is very limited.

Left — the without AI right AI

In the shooting menu to center in the top row is an icon AI, which connects to the process of neural computations. The smartphone is trying to identify the situation and slightly bend the under it. The key word is “slightly”. His intervention is not always visible, is a local “artificial intelligence” accurately. Perhaps even too accurately.

Portrait mode works fine: there is the usual filters, an imitation of Studio lights and some additional blur effects — for the most part pretty useless, but the separation of the object from the background is carried out efficiently. The only problem is you don’t use the zoom, and close-UPS at a fairly wide angle the main unit be not very successful because of the inevitable optical distortions.

The left images in the default format, right – activated night mode

And of course, there is a night mode — as in the case of artificial intelligence, is not too efficient: the dynamic range is expanded is not very serious, detail average. But the shooting is done quickly — to make a series, the smartphone takes 2-3 seconds. And Yes, it should be noted the main camera allows to take pictures at night without blur, and without activation of a special mode — let the quality of the photos and do not always impress.

The application interface of the camera Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro

The camera app is the standard for MIUI 10. In place and is enabled by default, the watermark indicating the model of the smartphone on which you take pictures, make sure to turn it off.

Despite the fact that the card four cameras in the smartphone Redmi Note 8 Pro, in fact, not playing — they are really useful, perhaps, only two (portrait mode, you can safely use without additional depth sensor) — but the overall impression from the recording process and the quality of images with very different lighting gadget makes a very pleasant impression. It supports the initiative of the Redmi Note Pro 7/7 and rightly claims the title of best photo quality of a smartphone in its class.

There is the slow motion mode up to a frequency of 960 frames per second (resolution is 720p), but the quality of performance he’s inferior to what we used to see in the “luminaries” time lapse — the flagship Sony or Huawei.

Front camera is also very good — 20 megapixel, lens aperture f/2.0 — focus and no flash, but with good sharpness and nice blur in portrait mode.

Work offline

In Redmi Note 8 Pro, the manufacturer has established a very capacious battery, it is logical reasoning that for a smartphone with a 6.5-inch display need something more than the usual four thousand milliampere-hour. It uses the battery 17.1 W·h (4500 mAh, 3.8 V) and say that the device shows a peculiar “vitality”. But it is not bad even at full load, the smartphone will last a day, and with ordinary usage scenarios, you can count on day work.

In our traditional test playing HD-video on maximum brightness with the included updates and notifications, the Redmi Note 8 Pro lasted ten hours for a smartphone with LCD screen level, in principle, not bad.

For charging the USB Type-C supports Quick Charge 4 (18 watts). But the kit 18-watt adapter is not expected – only the standard 10 watts. With it on full charging takes about just over two hours.

Conclusion

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro has disadvantages: the device looks good, but feels quite cheap in the hand; two of the four cameras, in fact, not needed; the screen directly configured; no moisture protection and fast charging adaptor in the kit… All of it, to be honest, looks more like nitpicking — we’re talking about the smartphone price 16-19 thousand rubles, depending on the amount of memory. And in this category the Redmi Note 8 Pro Shine — being in the lead among competitors and the recording quality (64-megapixel sensor is capable not only to put cipramil in the eye), and the performance, not even taking the unfortunate user NFC.

Today it is the most universal and the most obvious choice in the segment of “up to 20 thousand rubles,” — if you prefer a big smartphone, of course.

Advantages:

  • nice design;
  • powerful hardware platform;
  • good quality shooting — and as for the rear camera and front;
  • a large and rather bright display;
  • price.

Disadvantages:

  • advertising in software;
  • combined slot for the second SIM card and memory card;
  • there is no adapter quick charge complete;
  • not sealed;
  • there is a smartphone worse than it looks.
