Overview of smartphone Blackberry KEYone: click me
Blackberry KEYone was presented in the spring at MWC, but before the back button was made more than six months. There is a restructuring of the work with the distributors (after all, a unit for the production of equipment now owned by the Chinese TCL), and the full Russification. Yes, in a conversation about the Android smartphone sounded that word. Russian (rather esengeshnyh) KEYone is collected separately – it’s not just necessary to create a Russian version for applications, but also apply additional engraving on the hardware keyboard, and semi-transparent so the backlight is captured and the Cyrillic alphabet too.
From the title you can understand a key feature of the KEYone is a smartphone with a physical keyboard, literally created to ensure that all who sees him, I asked to get a closer look. It would seem that devices with QWERTY-keyboard was a mass phenomenon until recently, but smartphones are so deeply and firmly infiltrated into our lives, it seems that since the displacement klaviaturys on the sidelines of an eternity.
But not a single valuable keyboard new Blackberry. Traditionally, the gadgets of this company are renowned for their safety and let we are talking not about a proprietary OS, a proprietary shell for Android is literally Packed with extra software, and the manufacturer boasts protection from hardware level.
So, despite the rather ordinary stuffing (Snapdragon 625, a single 12-megapixel camera, 4.5-inch IPS display), meet KEYone was very interesting. This is one of the most curious and original smartphones of the year.

Design and ergonomics
Blackberry KEYone is the latest smartphone designed by Canadians, without Chinese influence. It’s hard to say what will become the “BlackBerry” gadgets when they are fully establish in the bowels of TCL, but KEYone definitely felt the breed. It’s really a beautiful device and I would not say that metronomy play a key role in the feelings, which causes smartphone. It just creates a sense of quality and tasteful things. Moreover, the combination of physical keyboard and screen, which adorn the typical Android icons, does not cause dissonance.
Important role this experience plays the simple fact that Blackberry just dropped the attempt to make a really compact gadget: case thickness – 9.4 mm; thin frame around the display – Yes well them, let Samsung and Apple butt. In addition, silver-black gamma is a real classic. Here we have a solid smartphone for respectable gentlemen. And this approach works KEYone really attracts attention, commands respect… and while they still easy to use. In the pocket is placed in the arm to keep it really comfortable.
In addition to the black and silver version also available (but not yet in Russia) fully black KEYone. Not too playfully.
The body is made of metal and glass only part: the keyboard is made of glossy plastic (which does not remain prints), and the back is covered with a panel made of rubberized plastic. Doesn’t sound like much but visually and haptically perceived again perfectly. And it’s the rare smartphone that does not tries to slip out of hands, then the thickness helps, and grippy texture of the back panel. One hand to use Blackberry KEYone, by the way, you can without any problems.
About the keyboard, we will talk separately, but one listing the features of management KEYone manufacturer has not done. Along with the standard hardware keys turn on and adjust the volume on the right side you can fit one more – programmable. There you can hang almost any function of a smartphone at your discretion – including quick access to any installed app.
On the top edge is a mini-Jack on the bottom – USB Type-C and speaker. Front glass is slightly bent on the edges – but it is covering the screen tempered Gorilla Glass 4, the display itself is flat. Blackberry claims that this glass is very resistant to various mechanical damage – and indeed it is. Now there is a tendency to produce “soft” smartphones, the front side of which is quickly covered with scuffs and small scratches. KEYone not like that.
But to show off something big, he also not can – sealed machine devoid, despite its brutal image.
Of course, this is not the first Android smartphone with a physical keyboard – don’t forget Passport and Priv (we did it the review). Reinventing the keyboard on the smartphone newly Blackberry KEYone did not – here is the same layout that Priv, and the same four-row structure. Thus processed, the keys (changed form they are stronger above the body) and, most importantly, they are now built not flimsy retractable slider module and monolithic body. You can safely push and the recoil is very pleasant.
To print the obtained very quickly. Yes, I know colleagues who write article on regular smartphones, spit on the physical impact, but blind typing on the onscreen keyboard is practically excluded – you can also adjust. Features – the need to constantly use Alt to enter numbers and symbols.
Lights – I have already mentioned at the beginning. Moreover, in the Russian version – two-tone: Latin highlighted by the white color, Cyrillic – orange. Of course, to redo the keyboard Cyrillic no one – a laborious process, and, in fact, meaningless. So some of the letters at the two bridges on the key – selecting by double-clicking.
Another feature of the keyboard of the new Blackberry, also migrated from Priv, – integrated capacitive sensor. It recognizes standard multi-touch gestures like swipe, zoom photos with two fingers and vertical scroll – they are all relevant not only for the UI and basic programs, but for any apps downloaded from Google Play. In addition, these movements can be controlled is written, erasing, for example, movement of the finger on the keyboard.
Another feature is hotkeys. Yes, I already mentioned programmable button on the right side, but not so, in fact, she needed, because at your disposal for this all-out QWERTY keyboard. Moreover, each key may be two (!) tasks – the device responds to short and long pressing in different ways. Enters into a dialogue with Sasha by Perekalin, who wrote a preliminary review of the KEYone Blackberry at MWC: “call Denis Levnikovu” can be hung immediately on the “short D”, and “long N” and to drive yourself crazy eventually. The device offers different helpful services and applications whose name starts with the desired letter. So, Telegram me up on the “T” on Instagram “I” and Chrome. But the use of fast call of applications I for two weeks of testing and not used – permanently opened using icons on the screen.
Finally, the keyboard does support predictive: if someone likes that kind of thing — please. Personally, my subjective dislike.
At this point you could arise the question: in the specifications of the specified fingerprint scanner, but it’s nowhere to be seen. On the rear panel it is definitely not, and on and on and overloaded the front for him, it would seem, simply no room. It’s simple – it’s built into the space. And this is a normal capacitive scanner, which is not too suffers from a small area. In contrast to these small scanners Sony Xperia, it is really convenient. With it you can unlock the device or confirm payment Android Pay.
Android, maybe Windows is inferior to the number of viral attacks, but there is a feeling that and this gap gradually will come to naught. When working with a smartphone have to be as careful as for a desktop computer. Blackberry – the company that almost since the Foundation focuses on “paranoid” and people who really need normal encryption, businessmen and top managers. Without their own operating system (which is simply because low prevalence is not particularly popular with cybercriminals) Blackberry has become more difficult to defend the reputation of the company that thinks about security. But she’s trying.
The developers claim that they have modified the Linux kernel itself. Without details, but like as on KEYone “the most secure Android”. To test this we can not. Another thing – boot: when enabled, checks if there are any changes in the firmware, are there any “extra”, not whether the user had selected (often unwittingly) alternative firmware. In the corporate application DTEK (available only for Blackberry devices), you can see the current level of protection. By the way, firmware updates, including Lata security holes, coming to a smartphone on a regular basis – then Blackberry is not exactly exaggerating.
The same program DTEK monitors access rights on various applications and reports (as well as yourself proactively blocks), if a program wanted something extra. I have a DTEK worked quite successfully, demonstrating confident “green checkmark” in all the relevant fields. But one of my colleagues, who took the apparatus to the test at the very same Blackberry, the app claimed only unpacked the phone has a non-original firmware; and to do nothing was impossible. At the same time, by the way, it was possible to safely use a smartphone on one side, from “glitches” no one is immune. On the other – “the most secure smartphone” is able to be left to the user. Still care – the best protection.
And by the way, access using PIN-code, pattern or fingerprint can not be disabled here, KEYone allows himself to instruct users. Probably correct.
Have enough of the original shell and other features. First, the Blackberry Hub service, which collected all the messages and notifications from different apps. Second, “Tab productivity” — tab on the right edge of the screen, where various messages, tasks for the day and so on. Thirdly, proprietary messenger BBM, which promises a good level of encryption (but really in the rating of the safe instant messengers it at the bottom). Well set a variety of signature services, replacing the standard Google software: notes, tasks, events, contacts, and so on.

Visually, the shell is different from the original Android is not too much. I note several of the menus of open applications and the Blackberry Launcher do not touch the status bar and icons – here you go. Shell works quickly and at first I wanted this section to completely fill their honey – use KEYone was really nice. But after about a week and a half have accumulated fly in the ointment — have started to regularly get a variety of errors that will crash any application without reasons, the unauthorized device will go into reboot in a vacuum, it will slow down the browser. Unfortunately, such a business smartphone flawless stability Blackberry KEYone can not be guaranteed – and is, perhaps, ahogany failure.
