The review of the laptop MSI Modern 15 (A10RB): not in the nuclei of happiness

Most laptops that pass through the 3DNews laboratory, are either to powerful gaming models, or to thin ultrabooks, but almost every one of them claims the great achievements in performance, weight, battery life or all at the same time. However, the canny buyer likely to be interested in the computer, the characteristics of which are dictated by the price rather than the pursuit of records. This is the hero of today’s review, laptop with a screen 15.6-inch MSI Modern 15. Size, filling and design

— all this makes the new business-oriented models that better fit into the interior of an office than a coffee shop or cabin of an aircraft. No modesty in this case is not synonymous with mediocrity. MSI Modern 15 found than us to surprise even against expensive counterparts.

The next advantage of Modern 15 is a discrete GPU — GeForce MX330 or MX250 with 2 GB of dedicated memory. For speed, they are virtually indistinguishable from each other, but each model is divided into two varieties depending on the available power reserve. Laptop MSI that we put testing (modification A10RB), got the older version of the MX250 with a TDP of 25 watts. Of course, the graphics adapter based on the budget chip GP108 — the decision not gaming class, but within 70-80 thousand rubles is full of devices without discrete graphics, and in such tasks as photo processing or video encoding, GeForce MX250 is obviously stronger than the integrated graphics core.

The rest of the specs is quite typical for modern notebook: dual-channel DDR4 memory with capacity from 8 to 64 GB and SSD NVMe standard. The only thing it would also be possible to draw attention to is the battery capacity. While other 15-inch laptops can boast a battery 99.9 W⋅h (no longer — will not be allowed to carry in the plane), 15 Modern equipped battery with a capacity of 52 W⋅h. However, in conjunction with the processor U-series it provides the business use of a good autonomy.

Appearance and ergonomics

Modern design 15 is associated with a 14-inch model MSI from the Prestige, the review of which we published in April, and if you put a number larger Prestige 15, to distinguish one device from another can be only the size of the touchpad and configuration of external connectors. This, of course, a compliment for a relatively inexpensive laptop that is Modern 15.

Chassis new assembled from aluminum panels and is either light gray or black like the laptop that came to us for testing. Among the not-so-compact relatives on the diagonal of the screen 15.6-inch Modern 15 distinguished by a delicate frame around the matrix and, respectively, of modest dimensions in the width and depth of which, it seems, is simply impossible to reduce, without sacrificing a webcam or lowering the lower edge of the display at the keyboard level. In addition to this, the laptop is quite thin (just 15.9 mm), and thanks to the beveled faces of the lower half of the body looks lighter and thinner than it actually is. But it is really easy: most similar devices with discrete graphics more weigh 1.6 kg.

Alas, the thin walls did not go on favor of the rigidity of the housing. Not only Lenovo, but other manufacturers are already forced us to accept the fact that the lid is easy to push in the middle or bend “screw”, but Modern 15 there is one vulnerable spot — the bezel around the keyboard and touchpad is also poorly resists the pressure and it’s easy to feel in the printing process. However, I must give credit to the designers of the machine: with nine legs, which support body, the keyboard is not as bouncy as equipment with the fashionable “arched” stand. In ultrabooks with a screen of 13.3 or 14 inches now decided to raise the bottom of the chassis above the work surface (the laptop rests on the ledge of the display unit, to facilitate the work of the cooling system), but Modern 15 this is absolutely not needed: the two fans are enough grid, which occupies a good part of the area of the bottom panel. In addition, the classic design in this case does not interfere to tilt the screen at least 180° from the base.

As for the controls, from 15 Modern and an already familiar model Prestige 14 to all outward appearances the same keyboard. As a result, the digital unit of the new product has not got, but would it use in models with a screen smaller than 17 inches is a controversial matter, but the big keys will appreciate every. However, MSI was worth the sacrifice of unification, to more efficiently use the space available under the screen: the keys Delete, Insert, PgUp and PgDn highlighted in the right lane, continue to compress the key “~” (and, accordingly, “e”) on the other side. And unfortunately, in large caps of the buttons and overall a good layout advantages of the Modern keyboard 15 over. The mechanism of the keys provides an in-depth course in 1.5 mm, but haptic feedback is especially important for rapidly printing blindly, lying under them cones, very blurry.

Touchpad Modern 15, too, leaves much to be desired, and it is not in the square, which is much less than the Prestige series, and again in mechanics. Manipulator is well configured for tracking the cursor and gesture recognition, but, first, he loudly “clicks”, and, secondly, the panel shaking and beating on something with a light blow one or two fingers.

All wired communications laptop are scattered on the side faces of the housing. On Board Modern 15 has three USB Type-A and a single Type-C, is combined with the output of the DisplayPort standard. Fortunately, all USB ports are working here at speeds of 3.1 Gen 1 or Gen 2 without such unpleasant surprises as USB 2.0 ports at Prestige 14. But with the Thunderbolt 3, as expected, more democratic model had to leave, but there is a full-size HDMI and a spring loaded MicroSD slot card reader.

As soon as the Modern 15 no Thunderbolt, no charging capability via this interface, and a compact power supply 90 W connect the standard barrel plug. By the way, the power supply is the only accessory that we found in the box with the device, but in our time, and more expensive laptops do not offer the buyer a generous package.

Above the screen is a webcam with a completely typical characteristics suitable for video communication: a resolution of 720p and a frame rate of 30 FPS. Built-in speakers is also better to write for voice communication. Although the creators of 15-inch laptops sometimes find space for large drivers, and reverberation chambers, this is not the case Modern 15. Here speakers loud enough to fill the room sound is medium in size, but, as expected, experiencing a shortage of low frequencies.

The internal structure and capabilities upgrade

Unlike many ultra-compact machines with screen sizes of 13.3 or 14-inch, MSI Modern design 15 allows you to easily upgrade components. Typed memory modules SO-DIMM and connector M. 2 for SSDs from two pieces.

Another that caught my eye after we dismantled the bottom cover Modern 15, is serious in view of the cooling system. The cooler consists of two partially related and partially independent circuits for removing heat from CPU and GPU. But the fact that Modern 15 such a modest battery capacity of 52 W⋅h, as shown by the autopsy, the blame does not limit the structure, and the desire to reduce the cost of space that could be put additional cells of the battery, just not otherwise engaged.

The screen quality

The display matrix, MSI Modern 15 not enough stars in the sky in comparison with the best laptop IPS panels, but if you keep in mind the price of the device, reasons for the disturbance test results has not brought. By and large, our claim to Modern display 15 are connected only with mediocre brightness level (a total of 262 CD/m2) and the depth of black, and, respectively, not standard contrast ratio (1:689). The benefit of the screen is covered with a Matt anti-glare film that helps work to light.

Fortunately, the brightness and contrast is only the matrix parameters that the user will not be able to fix it myself with the help of a colorimeter. If the owner of the novelties is going to use the laptop for editing, will first have to offset ICC-profile overestimated color temperature and, accordingly, to return to its rightful place the white point.

The rest of the picture on the screen Modern 15 will not require significant improvements, and it is always good news for users of the Windows operating system, devoid of funds, the global color correction. The range of shades of the matrix is almost entirely covers the sRGB space and well aligned gamma curves give a satisfactory assessment of the color accuracy (the average deviation of 1.39 standard Delta E 2000). The original curve gray constricted relative to a reference of the power function of 2.2 in the direction of 2.3, but for viewing video and photo in low light it is rather an advantage than a disadvantage. Especially the fact that the difference in luminosity between the black and white box there is not a record among IPS panels.


As one would expect from any modern laptop, screen, Modern 15 free from gross defects, such as hearty regional illumination or visible flickering at low brightness values.

Clock frequency, temperature and noise level

Related model MSI — Prestige 14 — which recently also tested 3DNews, we are praised for their excellent cooling system, easily discharge the heat of the six-core CPU and discrete graphics GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q. In various power modes, which allows you to change the program Creator Center Modern 15 behaves in a similar way, but due to the fact that a 15-inch chassis has enough room for two fans — one for CPU and another for GPU — cooler works even better. In addition, Modern 15 a less demanding graphics engine: regular TDP GeForce MX250 is 25 watts vs 35 GTX 1650 Max-Q. As a result, let the CPU here is a Quad core, it can develop such power consumption and clock speed that never dreamed of compact ultrabook that is similar to the Prestige 14.

Thus, in High Performance mode, power consumption of the chip is stabilized at 35 watts, and the frequency of stuck to around 3.5 GHz. Two economical profile — Balanced and Silent in this case, the CPU provides the same working frequency (about 2.4 GHz) and the power reserve in the 15-17 W, and all the differences between them, oddly enough, are reduced to the brightness of the display matrix.

As for the discrete video card, the GeForce MX250, in contrast to the more serious solutions from NVIDIA, does not allow neither to adjust, nor even to measure software their power consumption. Regardless of the mode of consumption and the type of load (only on GPU or both on the Central and graphics processor) chip, ground the same, and that is pretty high, frequencies in the MHz range 1683-1696.

In addition to impressive clock frequencies, MSI Modern 15 shows the reference temperature. The only way to heat the SHIT up to 96 °C is fully load both of the chip (CPU and GPU), the goal of ray tracing in the High mode Performance. In all other situations the temperature of the main component does not exceed 75 °C, and the mode High Performance on a stand-alone load on CPU provides even better cooling than Balanced or Silent.

Modes Silent and Balanced, the laptop runs extremely quietly, but only under an isolated load on the CPU. Well, that CPU power consumption mode High Performance, totally predictable increases the noise of the cooling system is up to 43 dBA without the involvement of discrete graphics. Crowns schedule serious result in 49 dBA, obtained by simultaneous loading of the two main chips. Fortunately, such usage scenarios, it’s still a rarity for that class of machinery that belongs to the new MSI. But it has one strange feature: even outside demanding applications when the computer is idle there is a faint but noticeable background noise, almost the same as in Silent mode/Balanced load on the CPU. The only way to make the computer completely silent — go to Super mode Battery where it is cooled passively, provided that there is no load on the discrete GPU.

Synthetic benchmarks

To pass the performance test, we launched a Modern 15 in MSI mode, High Performance and not disappointed with the results. In synthetic benchmarks it is clear that, let the high clock frequency and do not outweigh the difference in the number of nuclei between different models of those CPU, they are able to a large extent to compensate. Indeed, the distance between the Quad-core Core i7-10510U in the composition MSI 15 Modern and six-core Core i7-10710U at Prestige 14 very far from the theoretical 50% performance. A real breakthrough in performance can only provide eight cores at the disposal of mobile processors Core i9 ninth generation of the index H, but in this case we are talking about much higher level of energy consumption and, equally important, devices in different price categories.

Discrete graphics core GeForce MX250 chip GP108 — not like the more modern solutions from NVIDIA family GTX 16 (and especially GeForce RTX) or a similar performance of the mobile Radeon 5000-series. However, MX250 and is not designed for advanced game, but for undemanding fun it would be sufficient, and, most importantly, against any species integrated Intel graphics, even a low power discrete GPU capable of accelerating operations in a production application — such as programs for photo processing. Them we now turn.

Performance in production applications

Rendering in Blender using the Cycles engine, which we use as a universal benchmark CPU and GPU ended almost equally fast on the six-core Core i7-10710U and Quad-core Core i7-10510U, which is equipped with Modern MSI 15. The thing, of course, higher clock speeds. For this reason, Modern 15, more than 1.5 times the speed of the rendering device with almost identical configuration of iron (ASUS VivoBook S14), not to mention ultrathin 13 – inch and 14-inch laptops.

The results of these tests Blender made with the graphic CPU (in Cycles renderer and Radeon ProRender), is also influenced by the powerful cooling system Modern 15, although not so much. Especially is not out of the question that GeForce MX250 compete with graphics cards, the average performance category, which is installed in expensive laptops with a screen diagonal of 15.6 inch.

MSI Modern 15 does not claim the laurels of a mobile workstation, but, if we exclude excessively complex tasks (as the same raytracing in Blender), this model proved to be excellent in not as demanding professional applications. So, Adobe Lightroom uses the GPU only for the chosen task and, apparently, not friendly with multi-threaded execution on six – and eight-core processors. As a result, Modern 15 in this test by and large is not inferior to even the latest version of the 16-inch MacBook Pro and bypasses on points system with higher performance, discrete graphics.

A similar picture exists in the Photoshop benchmark. OCTA core CPU is useful for operations such as applying filters, and a powerful discrete GPU, respectively, to those functions of the photo editor, which involve the graphics core of the most active. But if to choose between four cores running at high frequency, and six more slow, Photoshop prefers the Modern MSI 15.

Edit video with a resolution of 4K in Adobe Premiere Pro — a dubious pleasure on laptops without a powerful discrete graphics. But MSI and Modern 15 here was pretty convincing. In the Assembly and export clips with effects GPU cooling and high clock frequency does not compensate for the deficit performance chip GeForce MX250. But in other cases, that burden falls mostly on the CPU, Modern 15 can achieve an acceptable frame rate, provided that the user reduce the resolution of the viewport to ¼ of the original (this corresponds to the 1080p screen). Quad core CPU — no problem, here it is again coped with the task not worse than the six-core chips, stronger limited reserve capacity.



The performance of the SSD

Inside MSI Modern 15 we once found a SSD drive that does not belong to extremely popular among OEM customers Samsung series PM981. This SSD called PC SN730 production Western Digital, which according to its passport cool like WD Black SN750. As shown by tests, SN730 really behaves in different loading patterns in a similar way, including mediocre performance of the speed of linear reading and writing. In addition, modern storage capacity of 512 GB is simply not able to achieve the same throughput as the more capacious device. However, in terms of short bursts of commands, and prevailing queries to read data, characteristic of most desktop applications, the owner of Modern 15 there is hardly a reason to complain about the SSD performance and overall responsiveness of the system.



The battery life

Despite the fact that the volume of the battery in MSI 15 Modern record not for laptops with a screen diagonal of 15.6 inches (52 W⋅h), the computer is able effectively to dispose of them. As we have seen earlier, the Super Battery mode lowers the operating frequencies of the CPU under load below 1 GHz, but when work time away from an outlet is more important than performance, the user can expect at least 6.5 hours (of course, with reduced brightness matrix) watching videos or surfing the web.


MSI Modern 15 has a lot in common with another model MSI — Prestige 14, which also recently visited the laboratory 3DNews. Even if these two laptops are aimed at a completely different consumer group. MSI Prestige 14 (and also the related model is larger Prestige 15) claim the laurels of compact work stations and have appropriate configuration of iron: six-core CPU in combination with a relatively powerful discrete graphics GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q. MSI Modern 15, on the other hand, is a budget machine for office work and lightweight performance of home exercises. However, after we finished testing both models, this suggests that the priorities of their designers was the same. As a result, the list of advantages and disadvantages in ambitious Prestige 14 and 15 Modern practical when compared with similar models in the other price categories, common.

The main advantage of the 15 Modern is an outstanding performance that MSI has managed to squeeze out economical thanks to the powerful Quad-core CPU cooling system: in some benchmarks, he walked even six-core Intel U-series. As for the GPU, though the GeForce MX250 — weak and not the fresh decision, it is a good idea reinforces the Central processor in such tasks as photo processing and video encoding. Especially in the price range of Modern 15 the presence of discrete graphics as such, it is not guaranteed. Add to this the wide opportunities for an upgrade (and RAM, and SSD all this is easily changed) and you have a tempting offer for those most important it is the high CPU performance with a small weight and dimensions laptop.

It is a pity that our test results are, strictly speaking, refer only to older versions of Modern 15 with Core i7-10510U, which is the minimum retail price closely approaches the younger configurations MSI Prestige 15, which is equipped with GeForce GTX graphics 1650 Max-Q, but weaker CPU brand Core i5-10210U. At this point the buyer has a choice: either high-speed CPU or the video card slot.

Finally, Modern 15 not at all as good as in iron performance. Laptop MSI raised the same claims to the mechanics which we presented earlier Prestige 14. No doubt, this is one of the lightest models with 15-inch screen and discrete GPU, but, as a result, the rigidity of the body (especially under the keyboard) leaves much to be desired. Yes, and the keyboard itself is unlikely to suit masters speed printing blindly. Finally, the screen could be brighter, and the battery is bigger, but it is, like it or not, the costs of price orientation of the model.
