Review notebook HUAWEI MateBook 13 AMD (HN-W19R): the ideal was so close

Choosing a hardware platform for the next upgrade series MateBook, the Chinese giant did not limit yourself and has released two versions of the same device: one Intel Core 10th generation, the other chips Ryzen. And that they are not confused, the “red” laptop is called: MateBook 13 AMD. The time when processors Advanced Micro Devices, despite their advantages, there were only openly budget items, left behind, and the model perfectly illustrates historical changes.

Seeing MateBook 13, once

you understand whose products are for HUAWEI at the same time a source of inspiration and rival to her own computers but now it is possible without any concessions to say that the Chinese finally managed to catch up, but in some ways surpass Apple. Updated MateBook 13 is not without flaws, and very serious according to the laws of ultrabooks, and yet we have one of the most interesting and promising machines that have emerged in this class over the last year. More interesting to know what brought Ryzen processors are not only powerful gaming laptops, but also compact work PC.

Specifications, prices

Before we talk about the specifications MateBook 13 AMD need to come to terms with the disappointing fact: HUAWEI didn’t manage to use fresh processors Ryzen 4000-series with the nuclei of Zen 2, is made at the rate of 7 nm. All possible configurations of the novelty is equipped with 12-nanometer chip last generation Ryzen 5 3500U. However, this is still the current offer, which is great ultra-compact laptops to their performance characteristics: four cores and sweep the clock frequency from 2.1 to 3.7 GHz in the framework of the two contacts at 15 watts. Equally important, system-on-chip Ryzen can boast of a very serious the integrated graphics core in this case is the Radeon Vega 8 with eight Compute unit’ami. Thanks to the powerful integrated graphics HUAWEI was able to do without a separate GPU, while related model MateBook 13 on Intel processors Core i5/i7 10-th generation got a discrete graphics card entry-level NVIDIA — GeForce MX250.

Sold in Russia MateBook 13 c Intel features 8 GB system memory DDR3L 2133 MHz, but with AMD — higher-speed DDR4 chips with a bandwidth of 3733 MT/s, and even larger size, 16GB. The amount of drive this one is a standard NVMe SSD at 512 Gbytes. Terabyte package, unfortunately, is not provided.

Volumes SSD it is already possible to guess that MateBook 13 not aiming for the “premium” price segment. Indeed, exactly the same configuration as came to us for testing (Ryzen 5 3500U, 16 GB RAM and polterabayta ROM), available in Russian online stores for the sum of 60 thousand rubles, and the Intel equivalent (Core i5-10210U, 8 GB RAM and GeForce MX250) a little more expensive — about 70. For such money not to buy any MacBook fresh Air (even with a dual-core Core i3), nor work advanced ultrabook under other renowned brand (like ASUS ExpertBook B9). As a result, HUAWEI had something to save, but as we now find out, the developers MateBook 13 was very different priorities than many of their Taiwanese counterparts.

Appearance and ergonomics

Designers HUAWEI continues to shamelessly copy the style of products a well-known company. If not for the letters on the cover instead of Apple, but yet the body is thicker and slightly different shape of the edges, MateBook 13 easily could be mistaken for a MacBook Air. Even their colors are the same silver or space grey. Who is who, will show only “test on the MacBook” (ie trying to lift the screen with one hand), which MateBook 13, no, he did not.

But if on the first attempt of the Chinese to imitate Apple could be ironic, now someone in Cupertino is no laughing matter. Or quality of materials or mechanics MateBook 13 absolutely no way inferior to its inspiration. While other manufacturers compete for the minimum weight, ignoring the strength of the chassis, HUAWEI agreed to make the laptop heavier — he pulls 1.31 kg, but gives the impression of monolithic products: even the screen is not so easy to bend, pulling the corners in different directions, and the keyboard and touchpad (eternal sickness other ultracompacts) are on solid ground. The only blot — but we can say that the design feature of MateBook 13, meaning that the lower half of the enclosure is not made of two panels (the piece around the keyboard and the bottom), and of the three. Edging with holes for the connectors is a separate item, well fitted to its neighbors.

But, perhaps, to compare with modern MateBook 13 MacBook Air is not entirely correct. Most of all he looks like “just” a MacBook with a 12 inch screen, which Apple later admitted a dead-end branch of evolution, but HUAWEI remains unconvinced, and, if to judge by results, not in vain. Dimensions MateBook 13 sets a screen with a diagonal of exactly 13 inches and aspect ratio of 3:2, which is even more rare than favorite Apple panel 16:10. After a typical 16:9 ratio, this screen — like a breath of fresh air, so he makes the short diagonal. And it’s not just subjective impressions. Screen area MateBook 13 is 503,22 cm2. For comparison, the prevailing on the market of matrices with a diagonal of 13.3 inches and a resolution of Full HD — only 487,64. MacBook Air screen is slightly larger (512,91 cm2), but the American is larger in width and in depth takes place is almost the same because of the high framework.

The proportions of 3:2 corresponds to the special resolution, and in addition, HUAWEI did not fail to increase the density of pixels: dimensions of 2160 × 1440 at a diagonal of 13 inches give 199,69 dots per inch. It’s not “retina” (226,98 MacBook Air), but quite close, and most importantly, enough to smooth out the fonts and interface programs. Finally, the matrix here is very bright, but Packed under the glass, which seems to be unprotected from the glare and in bright daylight it turns into a real mirror. Weak oleophobic coating, fingerprints are kept perfectly.

Mediocre oleophobic and anti-reflective coating — the first sign of the economy. The second set of external interfaces, which boils down to two USB Type-C and mini-jack for audio equipment connection. “Wait, because Apple is doing exactly the same!” — say those who have missed the table with technical characteristics MateBook 13. The fact that the “MacBook Pro”, though not rich connectors, support Thunderbolt 3, which allows to use one socket for all needs charging, image output and high-speed connectivity with powerful peripherals (eGPU and DAS). Have MateBook 13 only have USB 3.1 Gen 1, and each of the two ports its limitations: food that gives a compact 65-watt controller, can only come from the left, and the signal to the monitor is on the right. Included with the laptop is there an adapter to power the device and simultaneously to connect anything else, but to use the HDMI and VGA outputs that are also on the adapter, it will not succeed. As a consequence, users with external screens in either case there will be only one free USB connector on the adapter in the right position.

The third reminder that the new HUAWEI is, like it or not, offer to the masses, was the sound of the built-in sound system. Stereo speakers MateBook 13 not only is it quiet, which is natural for modest dimensions, but also resonate at high volume.

Finally, we are left with a troubling question: how good keyboard and touchpad? Contrary to all fears, we found that the manipulators of the new MateBook splendidly good. Lay under the keys, a solid Foundation — already half of success, but MateBook 13 more distinct mechanisms: not as elastic, as, for example, a MacBook Pro 16 inch, but between keyboards fresh MacBook Air and 13 MateBook we would put a sign of equality. The touchpad also did not disappoint: panel covered with moderately grippy and smooth as glass, ensures a perfect tracking of the cursor and prozhimaet with pleasant tactile feedback.

The power button creators MateBook 13 made in the space in front of the screen hinges, which helped to preserve the total width function keys and make room for the Del key. But this is not important: HUAWEI was one of the first manufacturers after Apple, which began to integrate in the power button the fingerprint scanner. A biometric sensor (whether the fault of Windows, whether because of imperfections in the device itself) was quite naughty at primary, but then recognize the owner of each touch and triggered lightning.

The internal structure and capabilities upgrade

To get inside the laptop is not as easy as you might think, looking at the six screws with Torx-heads: there is one hidden screw under each rubber foot, which first have to peel off. In addition, the bottom clings to the top of the housing a few hooks, but in order to separate the two halves of the chassis and then return to the bottom panel in place, we need to apply physical force, risking to damage the fasteners. However, users MateBook 13 to do this absolutely no reason. RAM is soldered on the motherboard and SSD, though removable, but wrapped in a cover, which is pressed against the wall of the housing via a thermal pad.

But immediately clear why MateBook 13 weighs exactly 1,31 kg, not less. It is not only a metallic chassis but also in the cooling system, which consists of a wide plate-heat sink, two thick heat pipes and two tangential fans. It is a pity that due to the limited height it was impossible to place the cooler and SSD on top of the motherboard. As a result there is not so much space for the battery, and HUAWEI had to do with the capacity of 41.8 W⋅h There is another limitation: Apple MacBook Air, of course, bad cooling system, but it won’t run worse if you put the laptop on his knees, on a carpet or other soft surface. But the cooler MateBook 13 can accidentally strangle, because it takes the air through the mesh in the bottom panel.

The screen quality

Screen MateBook 13 good extremely profitable for modest diagonal 13 inches aspect ratio 3:2 and the high resolution of 2160 × 1440, but in other characteristics for which it is customary to assess the quality of the matrix, he makes a double impression. Have to give credit to HUAWEI, the screen has a large supply of brightness — 349 CD/m2, is particularly important when the screen surface is glossy (and here she flashes very much). Although such numbers, of course, is not a record in comparison with indicators of the best examples of notebook panels, among small sized screens dominate dimmer varieties. But the contrast at the level of 695:1 — it is, anyway, a passed stage for the IPS technology.

And Yes, there is one caveat: maximum brightness of MateBook 13 can be squeezed only when working on the wire and in the Autonomous mode, it automatically drops to 200 CD/m2. Without this limitation, as we shall see in the result of the test battery, the new product is not enough.

Another point: high brightness in this case was achieved at the cost of increasing a color temperature of approximately 7500 K. As a consequence, if the buyer MateBook 13 is going to use the laptop for serious work with photos, it will inevitably decline as a result of the calibration under the standard 6500 K, which would entail some loss of brightness.

Another defect that will have to be corrected using a colorimeter, a bad gamma curve correction, which steals contrast to virtually the entire range of tones.

Finally, although the passport data MateBook 13 talking about the complete coverage of sRGB color spaces, in fact there is a shortfall of around 5 % of the area in the field of green shades.

Good colour accuracy — adjusted to offset the white point — can be considered quite satisfactory: the average deviation from the standard is 1.67 criteria for Delta E 2000, and, of course, do not exist problems such as strong regional or illumination visible to the naked eye the flickering panel with a low brightness setting.

Clock frequency, temperature and noise level

The laptop series HUAWEI MateBook 13 — the device of the original in all respects, but the model MateBook 13 AMD differs from the majority of similar machines and even hardware platform. More interesting to know how good the AMD chips Ryzen in still uncharacteristic for their niche of ultraportable notebooks. It is a pity that HUAWEI did not have time to use the latest 7-nanometer processors 4000-series and is forced to use Quad-core processor Ryzen 5 3500U based on the architecture of Zen+ and process technology is 12 nm.

Here the CPU works in the framework of the standard capacity reserve of 15 W and delivers approximately the same clock speed (2.6 GHz) under load, as similar Intel chips power consumption 10-th generation. However, it should be noted that the ratio of the number of megahertz per watt still in favor of AMD. In addition, the balance of power between the CPU cores and integrated graphics Radeon Vega 8 is configured so that, during simultaneous loading of both components drops the GPU frequency is stronger, leaving a space for avtoradgona CPU, and this is probably the best solution in terms of such a limited reserve capacity.

Approx. The measurement is performed after warming up the device and stabilization of all parameters.

Whatever it was, even 15 watts can be a problem for the cooling system, when we are talking about is so slim and compact devices, as MateBook 13 (and some, such as the MacBook Air, it’s hard to cope with 10 watts). But not this time. Double “impeller” MateBook 13 does not allow the CPU to warm up above 75 °C and approx the same time retains a moderate level of noise of 38 dBA, and when the system is idle, it is not heard at all. When the load on the GPU or on the CPU and GPU at the same time this works pretty loud though, judging by the heat of SoC, to drive the fan at high speed, while there is a great need. In addition, tight chassis with a 13-inch screen still imposes limitations on the heat sink, and the fact that MateBook 13 AMD noise in the stress test more than a 14-inch counterparts, does not cause neither surprise nor indignation.

Synthetic benchmarks

Despite the fact that the processor Ryzen 5 3500U operating at a higher clock frequency than similar offers Intel power, in the Geekbench synthetic benchmark, it is inferior on points more cost-effective chips for a competitor (especially in single-threaded mode). However, Geekbench uses too short patterns load to demonstrate the capabilities of the CPU in a real limitation of power and temperature. Test Cinebench R20, which nizkovoltnoy four cores takes a long time, put MateBook 13 AMD in its rightful place between laptops on Intel CPU with a TDP of 10 and 20 W, respectively.

But the GPU Radeon 8 Vega unconditionally superior graphics, which embeds in the mobile Intel Core processors of the 10th-generation 14-nanometer crystals Comet Lake. Analog Vega 8 performance are video cards with Iris Plus unit high-speed sampling memory eDRAM which Intel used in the now obsolete models, 8000-series, and slightly more productive components of the Iris G7 Plus the newest chips Ice Lake. Of course, the integrated graphics Ryzen 5 3500U — the decision not gaming class, and the laptop MateBook 13 is clearly not designed for games, but those work applications that afford nizkovoltnoy Quad-core CPU, will benefit from a good GPU.

Performance in production applications

Benchmark Blender engine Cycles is optimistic about the performance of the chip Ryzen 5 3500U, which when rendering four processor cores with a total capacity SoC in 15 watts has completed work faster 20-watt intelestage competitor, not to mention the 10-wattah CPU. And Vega graphics Radeon 8, as one would expect from the GCN architecture perfectly manifests itself in the calculations of General purpose. Valuable at least that Vega 8 compatible with programs that refuse to use the OpenCL API integrated video core Intel. But as it turned out, and the performance of the integrated video card Ryzen 5 3500U at the proper level optimization (as in the rendering engine Radeon ProRender) is comparable with the results of the discrete entry-level.

Unlike raytracer, which is perfectly thread the load on four cores and eight threads, Adobe Lightroom appreciates high single-threaded performance, which is not the strength of the architecture of Zen+. As a result, the passive operation of the photo (import photos, applying filters, and so on) nizkovorsnye Intel chips perform much faster than Ryzen 5 3500U. But in the active task MateBook 13 AMD is not worse than some of the “thick” ultrabook with discrete graphics.

Approx. The scores are calculated in percent from reference performance workstation with Intel Core i9-9900K, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 and 64 GB RAM.

Benchmark results Photoshop summarize our previous observations: a 15-watt chip Ryzen 5 3500U once again forced to fight a 10-watt SoC antalovsky, but the graphics Radeon 8 Vega performed the task not worse than discrete solutions GeForce MX250.

Approx. The scores are calculated in percent from reference performance workstation with Intel Core i9-9900K, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 and 64 GB of RAM, multiplied by 10.

Approx. The scores are calculated in percent from reference performance workstation with Intel Core i9-9900K, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 and 64 GB RAM.

The results of the tests in Premiere Pro again tip the scales to the side of the MateBook 13 AMD and the “red” platform. Here the Intel chips win Ryzen 5 3500U load, gentle to the graphics processor, but due to the increased power reserve. It is a pity that the laptop HUAWEI will now have to compete not only with those products, which are equipped with 14-nanometer silicon from Intel, but with fresh chips of Ice Lake, and they are at least not inferior Ryzen 5 3500U in performance, while consuming less energy.

Anyway, Premiere Pro in our collection of job applications is an optional program for all ultrabooks (the more compact), but in relation to MateBook 13 there are important practical conclusion: if you lower the resolution in the preview window to ¼ of the original and not to get carried away demanding effects, this machine is quite suitable for installation of 4K projects with a frame rate of 24 Hz. With the processing of effects that are dependent on the performance of GPU, integrated Intel graphics, not to mention discrete video cards cope much better than the Radeon Vega 8, but it probably has to do with how logic AMD distributes the power between the CPU cores and GPU under a heavy load on one or the other component of the SoC. The benefit of the installation of such projects in any case is strictly contraindicated laptops without discrete video card.

The performance of the SSD

In this instance MateBook 13 AMD installed the SSD SN PC730 from Western Digital, connected to a SoC with four lines of PCI Express 3.0. Recently, we were found more often in laptops products Samsung, but the WD targetlink by and large, not inferior to an extremely common Korean models PM981 in almost all aspects of performance. Despite the fact that the 512GB limit the throughput of a modern SSD-equipped capacious chips Flash memory.

The battery life

Performance HUAWEI MateBook 13 AMD stronger than most ultraportable laptops on those CPU that we have learned in recent years, but a powerful CPU befitting capacious battery, for which there simply was not space inside a slim housing. Will have to “put out the light” after four hours of surfing the web or watching movies on the HUAWEI screen MateBook 13 AMD at a moderate brightness.

In all that relates to MateBook 13 (whether the version with the AMD chip Ryzen or other models of the same series on those CPU), there is no escape from the comparison with the MacBook Air, which inspired the creators of the new. And, you know, in many respects, a product of HUAWEI at least not inferior to its prototype, and it is in those aspects that this phone is special strong. If you close your eyes on such a small thing as too tight of a loop, mechanics MateBook 13 nearly flawless. And MacBook Air, and MateBook is actually not the air laptops in its class. But their shell is hard enough in the place where this is especially important under the keyboard. Yes, and the keyboard 13 MateBook not reproach, and the touchpad almost better than anyone that we still had to deal, except again besknopochnogo Apple touchpads. Add to that a biometric sensor integrated into the power button, another valuable feature that MateBook borrowed from “MacBook”, while other manufacturers somehow embarrassed.

Comfort and ergonomics — half of what is required from an ultrabook, which, in fact, is a lightweight “typewriter”. And even more so for the money, which is product of HUAWEI. Go to the next screen, but in this respect MateBook 13 AMD left a mixed impression: with all the attention to detail it is strange that he chose such a matrix with high resolution and an aspect ratio of 3:2, just the perfect for this form factor, but absolutely did not care about its configuration. Finally, the small size and light weight are not much worth without the possibility of long battery life, but this MateBook 13 AMD things are not set out. To settled life, he, too, is poorly adapted — not enough ports and no support for saving in such cases, the interface Thunderbolt 3. Alas, but the ideal was so close…

However, finish the review on a positive note. Unfortunately, we have not got a rare opportunity to compare mobile processors from Intel and AMD in one chassis, and we say nothing about antalovsky kind MateBook 13. In addition, the laptop HUAWEI appeared on the market in not the best time, when the approach is the next generation nizkovoltnoy chips Ryzen. But MateBook 13 AMD and already aiming for the leaders in performance among really compact laptops. Or, on the contrary, it is one of the smallest models with a good Quad core CPU, suitable not only for passive consumption of content, but also for moderately demanding work tasks.
