Review notebook HUAWEI MateBook 13 AMD (HN-W19R): the ideal was so close
Choosing a hardware platform for the next upgrade series MateBook, the Chinese giant did not limit yourself and has released two versions of the same device: one Intel Core 10th generation, the other chips Ryzen. And that they are not confused, the “red” laptop is called: MateBook 13 AMD. Seeing MateBook 13, once you understand whose products are for HUAWEI at the same time a source of inspiration and rival to her own computers but now it is possible without any concessions to say that the Chinese finally managed to catch up, but in some ways surpass Apple. Updated MateBook 13 is not without flaws, and very serious according to the laws of ultrabooks, and yet we have one of the most interesting and promising machines that have emerged in this class over the last year. Volumes SSD it is already possible to guess that MateBook 13 not aiming for the “premium” price segment. Indeed, exactly the same configuration as came to us for testing (Ryzen 5 3500U, 16 GB RAM and polterabayta ROM), available in Russian online stores for the sum of 60 thousand rubles, and the Intel equivalent (Core i5-10210U, 8 GB RAM and GeForce MX250) a little more expensive — about 70. For such money not to buy any MacBook fresh Air (even with a dual-core Core i3), nor work advanced ultrabook under other renowned brand (like ASUS ExpertBook B9). As a result, HUAWEI had something to save, but as we now find out, the developers MateBook 13 was very different priorities than many of their Taiwanese counterparts.
Appearance and ergonomics
Designers HUAWEI continues to shamelessly copy the style of products a well-known company. If not for the letters on the cover instead of Apple, but yet the body is thicker and slightly different shape of the edges, MateBook 13 easily could be mistaken for a MacBook Air. While other manufacturers compete for the minimum weight, ignoring the strength of the chassis, HUAWEI agreed to make the laptop heavier — he pulls 1.31 kg, but gives the impression of monolithic products: even the screen is not so easy to bend, pulling the corners in different directions, and the keyboard and touchpad (eternal sickness other ultracompacts) are on solid ground. The only blot — but we can say that the design feature of MateBook 13, meaning that the lower half of the enclosure is not made of two panels (the piece around the keyboard and the bottom), and of the three. Edging with holes for the connectors is a separate item, well fitted to its neighbors.
But, perhaps, to compare with modern MateBook 13 MacBook Air is not entirely correct. Most of all he looks like “just” a MacBook with a 12 inch screen, which Apple later admitted a dead-end branch of evolution, but HUAWEI remains unconvinced, and, if to judge by results, not in vain. Dimensions MateBook 13 sets a screen with a diagonal of exactly 13 inches and aspect ratio of 3:2, which is even more rare than favorite Apple panel 16:10. After a typical 16:9 ratio, this screen — like a breath of fresh air, so he makes the short diagonal. And it’s not just subjective impressions. Screen area MateBook 13 is 503,22 cm2. For comparison, the prevailing on the market of matrices with a diagonal of 13.3 inches and a resolution of Full HD — only 487,64. MacBook Air screen is slightly larger (512,91 cm2), but the American is larger in width and in depth takes place is almost the same because of the high framework.
The proportions of 3:2 corresponds to the special resolution, and in addition, HUAWEI did not fail to increase the density of pixels: dimensions of 2160 × 1440 at a diagonal of 13 inches give 199,69 dots per inch. Have MateBook 13 only have USB 3.1 Gen 1, and each of the two ports its limitations: food that gives a compact 65-watt controller, can only come from the left, and the signal to the monitor is on the right. The touchpad also did not disappoint: panel covered with moderately grippy and smooth as glass, ensures a perfect tracking of the cursor and prozhimaet with pleasant tactile feedback.
The power button creators MateBook 13 made in the space in front of the screen hinges, which helped to preserve the total width function keys and make room for the Del key. But this is not important: HUAWEI was one of the first manufacturers after Apple, which began to integrate in the power button the fingerprint scanner. A biometric sensor (whether the fault of Windows, whether because of imperfections in the device itself) was quite naughty at primary, but then recognize the owner of each touch and triggered lightning.
The internal structure and capabilities upgrade
To get inside the laptop is not as easy as you might think, looking at the six screws with Torx-heads: there is one hidden screw under each rubber foot, which first have to peel off. In addition, the bottom clings to the top of the housing a few hooks, but in order to separate the two halves of the chassis and then return to the bottom panel in place, we need to apply physical force, risking to damage the fasteners. The screen quality

Have to give credit to HUAWEI, the screen has a large supply of brightness — 349 CD/m2, is particularly important when the screen surface is glossy (and here she flashes very much). Although such numbers, of course, is not a record in comparison with indicators of the best examples of notebook panels, among small sized screens dominate dimmer varieties. But the contrast at the level of 695:1 — it is, anyway, a passed stage for the IPS technology.
And Yes, there is one caveat: maximum brightness of MateBook 13 can be squeezed only when working on the wire and in the Autonomous mode, it automatically drops to 200 CD/m2. Without this limitation, as we shall see in the result of the test battery, the new product is not enough.
Another point: high brightness in this case was achieved at the cost of increasing a color temperature of approximately 7500 K. As a consequence, if the buyer MateBook 13 is going to use the laptop for serious work with photos, it will inevitably decline as a result of the calibration under the standard 6500 K, which would entail some loss of brightness.
Another defect that will have to be corrected using a colorimeter, a bad gamma curve correction, which steals contrast to virtually the entire range of tones.
Finally, although the passport data MateBook 13 talking about the complete coverage of sRGB color spaces, in fact there is a shortfall of around 5 % of the area in the field of green shades.
Good colour accuracy — adjusted to offset the white point — can be considered quite satisfactory: the average deviation from the standard is 1.67 criteria for Delta E 2000, and, of course, do not exist problems such as strong regional or illumination visible to the naked eye the flickering panel with a low brightness setting.
Clock frequency, temperature and noise level
The laptop series HUAWEI MateBook 13 — the device of the original in all respects, but the model MateBook 13 AMD differs from the majority of similar machines and even hardware platform. Whatever it was, even 15 watts can be a problem for the cooling system, when we are talking about is so slim and compact devices, as MateBook 13 (and some, such as the MacBook Air, it’s hard to cope with 10 watts). But not this time. Double “impeller” MateBook 13 does not allow the CPU to warm up above 75 °C and approx the same time retains a moderate level of noise of 38 dBA, and when the system is idle, it is not heard at all. When the load on the GPU or on the CPU and GPU at the same time this works pretty loud though, judging by the heat of SoC, to drive the fan at high speed, while there is a great need. In addition, tight chassis with a 13-inch screen still imposes limitations on the heat sink, and the fact that MateBook 13 AMD noise in the stress test more than a 14-inch counterparts, does not cause neither surprise nor indignation.
Despite the fact that the processor Ryzen 5 3500U operating at a higher clock frequency than similar offers Intel power, in the Geekbench synthetic benchmark, it is inferior on points more cost-effective chips for a competitor (especially in single-threaded mode). However, Geekbench uses too short patterns load to demonstrate the capabilities of the CPU in a real limitation of power and temperature. Test Cinebench R20, which nizkovoltnoy four cores takes a long time, put MateBook 13 AMD in its rightful place between laptops on Intel CPU with a TDP of 10 and 20 W, respectively.
But the GPU Radeon 8 Vega unconditionally superior graphics, which embeds in the mobile Intel Core processors of the 10th-generation 14-nanometer crystals Comet Lake. Performance in production applications

Unlike raytracer, which is perfectly thread the load on four cores and eight threads, Adobe Lightroom appreciates high single-threaded performance, which is not the strength of the architecture of Zen+. As a result, the passive operation of the photo (import photos, applying filters, and so on) nizkovorsnye Intel chips perform much faster than Ryzen 5 3500U. But in the active task MateBook 13 AMD is not worse than some of the “thick” ultrabook with discrete graphics.

The results of the tests in Premiere Pro again tip the scales to the side of the MateBook 13 AMD and the “red” platform. Here the Intel chips win Ryzen 5 3500U load, gentle to the graphics processor, but due to the increased power reserve. It is a pity that the laptop HUAWEI will now have to compete not only with those products, which are equipped with 14-nanometer silicon from Intel, but with fresh chips of Ice Lake, and they are at least not inferior Ryzen 5 3500U in performance, while consuming less energy.
Anyway, Premiere Pro in our collection of job applications is an optional program for all ultrabooks (the more compact), but in relation to MateBook 13 there are important practical conclusion: if you lower the resolution in the preview window to ¼ of the original and not to get carried away demanding effects, this machine is quite suitable for installation of 4K projects with a frame rate of 24 Hz. With the processing of effects that are dependent on the performance of GPU, integrated Intel graphics, not to mention discrete video cards cope much better than the Radeon Vega 8, but it probably has to do with how logic AMD distributes the power between the CPU cores and GPU under a heavy load on one or the other component of the SoC. The benefit of the installation of such projects in any case is strictly contraindicated laptops without discrete video card.
The performance of the SSD
In this instance MateBook 13 AMD installed the SSD SN PC730 from Western Digital, connected to a SoC with four lines of PCI Express 3.0. Recently, we were found more often in laptops products Samsung, but the WD targetlink by and large, not inferior to an extremely common Korean models PM981 in almost all aspects of performance. Despite the fact that the 512GB limit the throughput of a modern SSD-equipped capacious chips Flash memory.
The battery life
Performance HUAWEI MateBook 13 AMD stronger than most ultraportable laptops on those CPU that we have learned in recent years, but a powerful CPU befitting capacious battery, for which there simply was not space inside a slim housing. In all that relates to MateBook 13 (whether the version with the AMD chip Ryzen or other models of the same series on those CPU), there is no escape from the comparison with the MacBook Air, which inspired the creators of the new. And, you know, in many respects, a product of HUAWEI at least not inferior to its prototype, and it is in those aspects that this phone is special strong.
