In my row the best games 2017 Detention was on the same level with Divinity: Original Sin 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Simple but stylish visuals and basic control of the player immersed in the heavy atmosphere difficult for Taiwan, the homeland of the developers time. Having a good experience and a lot of warm reviews of his debut project, Red Candle Games has decided to move to the next level by jumping into full 3D. Visually the new game, of course, took a big step forward. Unfortunately, other elements are far more important for the genre, so to speak is not obtained.
Red Candle Games again refers to the history of their land. Taiwan eighties. My husband watches TV at dinner. The wife is busy in the kitchen. The fan ruffled the newspaper, spread out on the table instead of tablecloths. Nothing portends trouble, suddenly the quiet life the protagonist suddenly turns into a nightmare. Even too suddenly.
A measured introduction and the exposition, which writers lined up in Detention, is not yet in sight. Devotion is immediately struck with the bat. Hero spontaneously loses consciousness and wakes up already in a completely empty apartment for the night. The only light source — the TV is showing interference. On the table instead of dinner — child family pattern.
The dramatic entry is discordant with the future of leisurely narrative. Somehow we move from one year to another, observe the changes in different periods of family life. Gradually, piece by piece, disparate events together. At first it seems that everything is fine, but so many families — they are ideal only for show. We need to go deeper, both from cabinets immediately begin to fall out skeletons.
In the history of the Devotion of the strong emphasis on religion, namely Taoism. The authors argue on the topic of faith and its extremes. Sometimes it can help, but excessive reliance on a higher power will lead to no good, even if intentions are good. The promise, if not banal, it is quite common and is often found in various subjects. But Devotion feels fresh because the authors show the events through the prism of their culture, which the West — exotic and not the usual way.
Despite the harsh introduction, for the most part the game is a very leisurely walk simulator. The protagonist walks deliberately slowly so we could see every inch of the interior. Devotion looks surprisingly expensive — the apartment very detailed, everything in its place: the cluttered Desk, the mess in the nursery, the walls hung with pictures and talismans. In different periods the same room look very different, and only one decoration is easy talks about the events and changes in characters.
Technologies are used not just for pretty pictures, but as one of the important tools for storytelling. In three hours the story fit a lot of bright, memorable and sometimes eerily unpleasant scenes. One of the moments in the final part of the game is physically hard to perceive, but there is also force to take in the events directly involved.
It is a pity that the developers have not been able so cleverly to wriggle out of mystical devilry and bring the story to a logical ending, as it turned out to Detention. A story which starts without a regular entry, receives and worthy of completion. Despite the fact that visually, the last scene is rich and beautiful, there is a feeling of understatement. On the one hand, us in colors showed the life and hardships on individual families — in this story easy to believe. But why all psychedelic, and remains a mystery. With equal probability it could be the dying hallucinations, and narcotic intoxication. Or just had a bad dream. Who knows?
Can’t help thinking that the authors did not realize the full potential, both from the point of view of history and in the gameplay. Again in Detention, with a minimum set of features, there were many interesting game situations. Now, with a full three-dimensional environment and a first-person, features a lot more. However, to use them somehow not in a hurry. Available inventory first hints that we are waiting for the puzzle, but they never go beyond the “guess which of the three items apply here.” And for this you city inventory?
Devotion — stylish horror film that managed to tell a compelling story of individual families. But I believe it is in the events that happened “in reality”, but hell only adds to the atmosphere of nightmare, but, alas, not getting any explanation. Detention was not so technically advanced game, but — and this is much more important — was holistic. And touched on deeper matters than the very prosaic things like “love leads to sin” and “good intentions pave the road to hell”, even if shown through the prism of the Taiwan life eighties.
* * *
Devotion are mundane simulator walk, not even trying to bring into this formula something new. There are no interesting puzzles or fights the spirits, nor any action. However, it is still atmospheric horror, which we can recommend to any fan of the genre.
PS Around the game drama was unbelievable. The authors were convicted of gross jokes and insults of the Chinese authorities. Red Candle Games in every way justified, emphasizing the fact that these materials were in the game randomly. Like it or not, but talented developers (accidentally or intentionally) and the game fell out of favor. Despite the fact that the plot Devotion absolutely nothing to do with policy (in contrast to Detention, by the way)! At the time of writing, the official Youtube channel of the developer rollers Devotion was removed, and the game itself on Steam is unavailable — the page is removed, and a “portfolio” of the Studio, she no longer appear. It is planned to re-release in the Valve store later, removing all disputed content.
- interesting family story about faith and love, turned into a nightmare;
- elaborate picture with lots of detail that helps the narrative;
- the atmosphere of Eastern life;
- several strong, original scenes.
- mysticism for mysticism is not getting the slightest explanation;
- the lack of interesting game situations and puzzles;
- entering without exposure, and the open finals.
Locations in the game are few, but each of them very meticulously drawn, and the successful application of post-processing effects and a good play of light and shadow smooth technical imperfection.
The Oriental folk music are a big help in creating the right atmosphere, although most of the time we will spend in silence.
Everyday from the point of view of mechanics simulator walk, interesting primarily for its history.
Devotion compared to Detention feels like “one step forward and two back.”
