Review of smartphone Huawei P40 lite: the four cameras at a reasonable price
Huawei likes to release the same smartphone under different names in different markets. What now goes on sale in Russia under the name P40 Huawei lite, Huawei is already known as Nova 7i (in Malaysia and other countries of South-East Asia), as well as Huawei Nova 6 SE (in China and Hong Kong). Between them there are small regional differences like supported different LTE bands, plus some versions may not be NFC, but with a purely “railway” point of view under different names hides the same device.
Name P40 lite as it suggests that this is the Lite version of flagship smartphone of the company which is not yet officially presented. Well, we have now would be quite an interesting experience – familiarity with the “Lite” flagship without any idea what will be the flagship.

Design, ergonomics, software
Even before the official announcement I came across photos of the P40 lite pearlescent body colour – such a, you know, are heterogeneous, with beautiful tints and a little “bias” towards purple. In General, beautiful color, in full accordance with the fashionable trends. But it turned out that in Russia the start of sales of smartphone Huawei P40 lite will be available in black and bright green design. The latter came to us for a test I would rather call this color emerald. Looks quite nice, but my favorite is still the pearl.
From a purely visual point of view, the smartphone is good. I would say its design is unobtrusive, without explicit borrowing. It is possible to trace similarity with Mate 20 Pro and iPhone 11 (square unit cells on the back panel), with Huawei smart P Z (case shape, color), but it is very distant. The smartphone is only 20 thousand rubles, and the device in this price bracket rarely have any frills in appearance. But it should be noted that the device is quite complicated okay. He has a pretty compact case for the device with a diagonal of 6.4 inches, the smartphone is kept very comfortable. This is facilitated by rounding the perimeter of the rear panel. However, the case is all glossy and very slippery, I would recommend immediately to use cover.
Almost the entire front side of the housing occupied by the display frame is still there, but the small screen takes up 83.5% of the area of the entire surface. Without cut-out in the form of “Bang”, instead – a small round cutout for the front camera in the upper left corner. Grating voice dynamics is a narrow strip above the screen. Speaker under it is very small, so the sound quality during a call is a little worse than, for example, the iPhone X.
As usual, the front and rear of the chassis is made of tempered glass with oleophobic coating. However, Huawei does not specify what kind of glass is used. Probably not Gorilla Glass, but a basic test on the scratch resistance of the screen passed with no problems. But the frame around the perimeter of the housing is made of plastic and scratches very easily.
As part of the controls and connectors Huawei P40 Lite does not offer anything new. At the lower end, and a centered USB Type-C connect data cable and charger, and a mini-Jack for headphones. Wired headset, by the way, is included – however, the most simple and cheap, such as those that give free planes on long haul flights.
The fingerprint scanner is located on the right side and combined with the power button. This, in my opinion, a very controversial decision. To unlock the phone simply press your finger against the sensor, it works instantly. But it often happens accidentally pressing on the power button and get this: the touch apparatus rasplachivaetsya and then pressing the button again blocked. I think that the clicking mechanism in this case needs to be tighter. Well, or this can be used for long life of your smartphone.
Face detection is also available using the front facing camera. Works fine, no glasses or wearing a hood system with the wing not knock, we will assume that the test is for use in Russia successfully passed.
In the role of the operating system is Android 10.0 with shell EMUI 10. The most important feature is the absence of Google services such as Google Play, Google Pay, GMail and Google Maps. A lot of this in Russia can be replaced by the service “Yandex”, which are available in the store Huawei AppGallery. But some (really needed) apps are not there. Instagram, Telegram, Facebook – all of this can be installed by downloading the APK files. However, if you want, and Google services can be installed, but you have to be prepared for the fact that the next firmware update they will disappear, and the old method of installation will stop working.
Part of standard applications at Huawei P40 lite full order. There is a calendar, calculator, notes, voice recorder app with weather forecasts, contacts, and so on. Moreover, the data from all of this is synchronized through the cloud, so that the transition from one smartphone Huawei without Google services don’t have to be so painful.
Display and sound
Display P40 lite uses a matrix LTPS IPS with a resolution of 2310 × 1080 pixels at a diagonal of 6.4 inches gives a density in the amount of 398 ppi. This is quite a good result in this price category. Flagship handset, of course, offer higher image density, although the difference with the naked eye almost not visible.
Brightness, and contrast of the LCD display Huawei P40 lite small: 450 CD/m2, 1027:1, respectively. To use a smartphone on a Sunny day, but I would not say that most comfortable. Really deep black from this IPS-matrix, unfortunately, do not get it.
Display setting the standard for EMUI 10. You can adjust the font sizes, activate a dark theme and choose the color: either bright (default), or standard. The first has a more cool colors and expanded color gamut, the second close to sRGB and warmer. For color accuracy they are about the same, here we present measurements of the screen in bright mode, in which it is proposed to use the smart phone manufacturer.
Color gamut of the display Huawei P40 lite is very close to the standard DCI-P3. Average gamma is 2.26 and with smooth curves, in this respect, the screen works perfectly. The temperature curve is also perfectly smooth, but cold colors, 8 500 K. the deviation Delta E on a scale Checker Color (grayscale + extended color gamut) of 6.17 is at a rate of 3.00. Average, but overall I can’t say that the display P40 Lite is configured badly. This is a deliberate bet on cool shades.
Sound capabilities Huawei P40 lite can be called typical for a smartphone at the price of 20 thousand rubles. The sound is played through one speaker which is located on the lower end of the body (and the sound may be a little prislushatjsja if you keep the device in a horizontal orientation), the upper speaker is too weak, it only works during a call. Very pleased that the manufacturer did not abandon the mini-Jack, and this means that you can still use a good quality wired headphones. However, sooner or later a wholesale rejection of this connector will reach the middle to budget smartphones.
Iron and performance
Huawei P40 lite is built on the platform HiSilicon Kirin 810, performed on a 7-nanometer process technology. The Central processor contains eight cores, two Cortex-A76 with a maximum frequency of 2.27 GHz and 6 cores Cortex-A55 with a maximum frequency of 1.88 GHz. In the role of an accelerator is the graphics chip Mali-MP6 G52. The performance of the platform is sufficient not only for all kinds of interactive, office and messenger tasks, but for most games. At least in the next year or two the owner of a P40 Lite will not feel deprived. But let’s look at results of synthetic tests.
In the eighth version of AnTuTu Huawei P40 Lite gaining almost 300 thousand points, and in 3DMark Sling Shot and GFX Benchmark good performance, it further reinforces what I said above about the possibility to play games. In tests using neural network computing (AiMark) by the standards of smart phones without a dedicated chip, the result is also good, but performance in the browser (WebXPRT) does great.
And the CPU almost does not reduce the frequency under load. Test the throttle showed that the CPU loses only 5% of the maximum clock frequency. This is also a very good indicator.
In the test instance had 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of onboard storage. However, the official Huawei website says that Russia will sell a version with 8 GB of RAM. At the small difference in price, perhaps I should give preference to her. Any option on the part of built-in storage is not provided, and to increase the amount of storage that you can only use the NV card and only 256 GB.
Communications and wireless communications
It is interesting that only ten years ago, support for two SIM-cards issued in any device of Chinese origin. The joke about “Chinese iPhone with two SIM cards and a TV” actually was not a joke. But now any self-respecting smartphone has a slot for SIM-cards. Even Apple at some point ceased to resist, and added into your smartphones the same, albeit with some reservations. In General, I mean, if the tray for two SIM cards in Huawei P40 Lite should not surprise you. However, they operate in Dual Standby mode, as the communication module in the smartphone one. The second slot for the SIM card combined with card slots – Yes, not the most convenient option.
Built-in LTE modem P40 Lite supports a maximum incoming rate at 400 Mbps and outbound at 75 Mbit/S. the Presence of NFC module in the smartphone depends on the region in the Russian version it will be, but to use them you will only be able to quickly pair devices via Bluetooth. Google Pay will not work, even if you find a way to install to the smartphone app store, Google Play and other Google services.
Huawei P40 Lite as well as his twin brother in the face Huawei Nova 7i system uses four built-in cameras, which are located in the upper left corner of the back panel. Visually the unit cells 11 Pro resembles the iPhone, although really compare it would be more appropriate with Huawei Mate 20 Pro, since this smartphone was first offered this design. But from the point of view of technical characteristics compare P40 Lite wants likely with vivo V17 too much in common in terms of technical characteristics.
So, the role of the main camera supports a module with a 48-megapixel sensor that uses a Bayer filter, Quad, lens with equivalent focal length of 26 mm and aperture of ƒ/1,8. It is worth noting that phase detection autofocus is used only in this cell and in others it is not. And optical stabilization not at all in any of the cameras. Again, by default, the main (let’s call her that), the camera takes pictures in resolution of 12 MP (4000 × 3000 pixels) for taking pictures with a maximum resolution need to activate the corresponding item in the menu. Well, let’s just look at the pictures taken with the main camera at the default resolution.
See all images (15)
To activate the shooting mode resolution 48 MP will have each time you start the camera that, frankly, a bit annoying. But it is a common practice for all “mnogokasatelnoy” smartphone with a few exceptions. I think the main reason is space saving. One 48-megapixel photo (8000 × 6000 pixels) takes approximately 2 to 4 MB and the maximum resolution can easily “weigh” 8-14 MB. Yes, in settings there is two shooting mode at a maximum resolution, but the big difference between them, offer you to determine which is which.
Second camera – very wide angle, with a resolution of 8 megapixels, the lens with EGF 13 mm and aperture of ƒ/2.4 GHz. As often happens, no autofocus, the camera is forcibly induced at infinity, but due to the great depth of field shots come out sharp, at least if not to withdraw completely into focus. Examples of shooting ultra-wide angle camera you can see below.

See all images (7)
For shooting macro there is a separate camera, however, its specifications are very modest: the resolution is only 2 megapixels (1600 × 1200 pixels) aperture ƒ/2.4 GHz, also no autofocus, so the only way to achieve sharp images is to keep the lens at a distance of approximately 4 cm from the object. The recording quality is satisfactory, a decent result can be obtained only in good light.

The fourth camera separately not used in any way, she plays the role of sensor depth in the mode of portraiture. But if someone is important, its characteristics are the same as the camera for macro photography – 2 Megapixel, ƒ/2.4 GHz. Front-facing camera, as you already know, is located in the round cutout on the screen in the upper left corner. She is very moderate resolution of 16 megapixels and aperture of ƒ/2.0. Autofocus it does not have, and the role of the flash is used the screen backlight. With the arm’s length self-portraits come out quite good, even in the twilight.
The only thing I don’t like P40 Lite and almost all the smartphones comes from China, is a ruthless, Intrusive and pointless beautification. It is, of course, you can disable, but I’m still not sure it can be done completely.
In Huawei P40 Lite installed high-capacity lithium-ion battery by 15.96 WH (4200 mAh), but by itself the capacity of the us almost says nothing. The smartphone is with the top platform Qualcomm Snapdragon and AMOLED screen, could give 15 hours in our test. But P40 Lite uses the platform Kirin 810, and its screen – IPS a matrix, so in theory we should expect results are a bit more modest.
However, the smartphone has shown itself to be better than you would expect. In the standard test, implying a background play FullHD videos at maximum screen brightness with active Wi-Fi connection, Huawei P40 Lite for 12 hours. In real life a single battery charge without problems for a full day of work from early morning to late evening, even if you like to watch video on the way to work or to play games. You can not even take a charger or external battery. Oh and don’t forget that P40 Lite supports fast charging, and the adapter (40 watt) included in the base package. Just half an hour the battery charges to 70% and a full charge takes about an hour.
Huawei have turned out another well-balanced mobile-middling. For 20 thousand roubles it offers a large screen and high quality that is comfortable to watch movies, play games and read books, as well as a good set of cameras with a full night mode, ultra-wide viewing angle and a dedicated camera. The design is nice, not repulsive, front and back protected by tempered glass. Performance is sufficient for most tasks, including games, and the battery is 4200 mAh gives a full day’s work from morning to evening. Adapter for quick charging kit and a mini-Jack are perceived as a nice bonus, but without them, the smartphone would not be worse.
Well, if you are worried about the lack of Google services, in the case of Russia (and, perhaps, with all the CIS countries) it is possible to replace the “Yandex”. The only thing one way or another will have to accept is the lack of contactless payment Google Pay.
- nice design, bold colors;
- sufficiently high performance;
- good battery life;
- a good set of cameras;
- an adequate price.
- memory card format NV;
- lack of Google services;
- there is no protection from dust and moisture.
