Review ASUS ZenBook 14 UX434FL: two screens in a laptop is the norm

To us in the lab arrived very interesting version of the ZenBook 14 UX434FL. In addition to the processor Intel Core i7-10510U and graphics NVIDIA GeForce MX250 in the laptop soldered 16 GB RAM DDR3-2400 and installed SSD Intel Optane of 512 GB. Unfortunately, at the time of writing the laptop with this configuration is not sold.
Wireless network device implemented by the controller Intel 9560, which supports Wi-Fi standards IEEE 802.11 b/g/n/ac with 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and a maximum bandwidth of up to 1734 Mbps and Bluetooth 5.0.

Appearance and input device

Me, as a person who always and everywhere, in ZenBook 14 UX434FL most attracted to its size and weight. The thickness of laptop is just 17 mm and the device weighs not more than 1.3 kg. There is no need to spend any Parallels and comparisons: ZenBook 14 UX434FL very convenient to carry.
Laptop cover reveals approximately 135 degrees without much effort, you can lift it with one hand. The hinges ErgoLift well-positioned screen, it is not loose even during active and fast typing.
The build quality of a test model I have no complaints. The laptop, by the way, has been successfully tested for compliance with military standard reliability MIL-STD-810G. The testing included the test in the harshest conditions: at altitude, in extreme temperatures and humidity. In addition, we have subjected this ultrabook series of internal tests, the requirements which greatly exceed the generally accepted computer industry standards.
Laptop screen has a thin part on top and 8 mm on each side and 2.9 mm. as a result, the matrix occupies 92 % of the area of the top cover. In simple language, these characteristics mean the following: 14-inch model is very compact in size it is close to some 13.3-inch laptops.

Such a focus, according to the manufacturer, provides greater comfort for the user, creates additional space for air circulation around the bottom of the shell and contributes to obtaining a more pure sound with superior bass.

The keyboard ZenBook 14 UX434FL comfortable. Used a fairly common scissor mechanism that the key travel is 1.4 mm. Used same matrix type Super IPS. For the sake of saving battery life screen resolution can be reduced to 1000 × 500 pixels and the frequency reduced from 60 Hz to 50 Hz.
As ScreenPad screen 2.0 is useful. By default, both laptop display work in the extension mode, that is, the small screen is a continuation of the big. When enabled, the device immediately activates the shell ScreenXpert. On screen you can make the active window of the messenger or media player. I use ScreenPad 2.0 watched videos on YouTube and worked.
The program Quick Key allows you to quickly enter the long shortcut keys. App Handwriting used for handwriting input, a Number Key for speed dial numbers. By default, the laptop has a special program that increases the functionality of the main Microsoft office packages: Office, Excel, and PowerPoint. Same here — on ScreenPad 2.0 — you can get a software Adobe. Interestingly, very convenient is the inclusion on the touchpad numeric keypad NumPad.
The role of the touchpad touchpad plays just fine. The glass surface was very soft to the touch and perfectly perceives the touch of your fingers — of course, supported the mode of operation of the multi-touch.
To switch between modes quite convenient, the bottom of the panel there are the buttons. Also switching “touchpad/screen” is responsible for a separate function button. The only thing I dont like is constant on ScreenPad 2.0 screen mode after every reboot of the laptop.
The internal structure and capabilities upgrade
To remove the bottom panel of the ZenBook 14 UX434FL, it is necessary to remove not only the visible screws, but to get to the two hidden. This will take literally tear the rubber feet of the device. We disassemble the ultrabook did not, so as not to spoil its appearance.

Since the laptop has GeForce MX250, the test device in a modern AAA projects using high graphic settings makes no sense. In principle, to test ASUS ZenBook 14 UX434FL in games in General do not make much sense, and yet in Full HD we have launched World of Tanks 1.0 (built-in benchmark, various preset modes graphics quality).
Gaming performance was determined using the well known program FRAPS. With its help we get the render time of each frame. The test display was carried out using the colorimeter X-Rite i1Display Pro and HCFR application.
The time of the laptop battery was tested in two modes. The first version of the load — surfing the web — involves alternately opening and closing tabs sites 3DNews.ru, Computeruniverse.ru and Unsplash.com with an interval of 30 seconds. Display and sound
In the market you can find versions of the ZenBook 14 UX434FL that use different matrices. In our case we use multi-touch IPS panel AUO AUO323D equipped with a glossy finish and supports a resolution of Full HD.
The minimum luminance level is white the screen is 17 CD/m2 and a maximum of 302 CD/m2. It is obvious that a laptop will be convenient to use both day and night. High brightness — a nice feature when dealing with glossy panels. The contrast from AUO AUO323D too high, it is 1075:1, so watching movies on the laptop quite nicely.
Overall, the ZenBook display 14 UX434FL calibrated at the secondary level. See for yourself: color even though the temperature is stable throughout the range, but is always above the reference value of 6500 K. the Inflated and gamma of 2.26, that is a little more standard 2.2. Coverage of the space sRGB is also not absolute, though quite close to it. In the end, the average deviation for grey scale was 4.3, and a maximum of 8.92. And yet the screen ZenBook 14 UX434FL will not fit, perhaps, only to those who need accurately calibrated display. The rest to work with your notebook turned out to be very convenient: at AUO AUO323D excellent viewing angles, the glare on the edges I have found, like the use of PWM, and in all the brightness range of the screen.
Temperature, frequency and noise
The 3DNews laboratory has tested many ultrabooks, which used chips families Refresh Kaby Lake and Whiskey Lake. In August, Intel introduced the 10th generation of Core chips, which includes the device of two families: Comet Lake and Ice Lake. In the first case we are talking about processors manufactured in 14 nm process. In fact, we are dealing with a purely cosmetic update, Whiskey Lake. You could even say that the chip maker continues to use the Skylake microarchitecture, which next year turns for 5 years. Here the greatest interest represents a 6-core model Core i7-10710U. Insanely curious to know how the chip feels in ultrabooks, because its standard TDP is only 15 watts.
Family of Ice Lake submitted by processors, for 10-nm process technology. They are built on the microarchitecture Sunny Cove, which, according to Intel, offers up to 18 % increase in instructions per clock. A significant difference between the collections, however, belong to the same generation of Core is also used integrated graphics. If the Comet Lake, use the standard iGPU equipped with 24 blocks of the EU, in some CPU Ice Lake integrated graphics Iris Plus — it could be the kernel as 64 and with 48 Executive boxes. Moreover, Ice Lake is equipped with a dual channel memory controller that supports the standard LPDDR4-3733 and DDR4-3200.
Quad-core Core i7-10510U used in the ZenBook 14 UX434FL, refers to the generation Comet Lake. Base frequency of the chip is 1.8 GHz, but in Boost-mode, the frequency of the core can reach 4.9 GHz. When working in eight strand mode, the frequency of the Core i7-10510U in theory can grow up to 4.3 GHz.
It is important to note that the characteristics relevant to the value of TDP is 15 watts. At the same time, the laptop manufacturer may reduce the estimated power of 5 W or increase it to 10 watts.
For comparison recall that for single-load frequency of the Core i7-8565U, belonging to the family Whiskey Lake, reaches 4.6 GHz, and when loading all four cores at 4.1 GHz. Turns out, Comet Lake-chip should be faster than 300 MHz. Only here is it possible such a difference in frequency in reality?
The question, however, is rhetorical. Remember the old Core i7-7700K? When loading all four cores it runs at frequency 4.4 GHz. Only here in the program LinX 0.7.0 using AVX2 instructions, the level of power consumption exceeds 100 watts. What about Core i7-10510U with its 15-watt TDP?
ASUS ZenBook 14 UX434FL iron behaves as follows. Just for a few seconds, the system allows the processor to work with a power limit of 35 watts. At this time, the frequency of the chip is kept quite high, but the processor heats up to 94 degrees on the very hot core. Still, with this load can not cope any one ultrabusy cooler. Then the power consumption of the Core i7-10510U reduced to standard 15 watt — and as a result, the frequency periodically falls to 1.1 GHz (we see the 700-megahertz trottling is not associated with overheating), and the temperature up to 68 degrees Celsius. Working in this mode the laptop is not very loud — from a distance of 30 cm, the sound level meter was fixed to 40.7 dBA.
LinX is a program which is very strongly loads the CPU. In most cases, the ultrabook will not be used in such conditions. However, 15 watts is still very hard limiting factor. In the screenshot above, we see that in Adobe Premier Pro 2019 during rendering 4K video the frequency of the Core i7-10510U already lowered to 1.4 GHz (again, we are witnessing the throttle, and not associated with overheating of the CPU), and the temperature of the hottest CPU core is kept at 68-77 degrees Celsius. Yes, compared to what it was in LinX, the CPU was operated at a higher frequency (about 400 MHz), but the TDP of the chips Comet Lake still limits their performance.
After testing a variety of ultrabooks, equipped with a 4-core processors Refresh Kaby Lake, Whiskey Lake and now Comet Lake, I boldly declare that you will not find in the market model, where a processor in a multithreaded application will run on maximum. In such a device, or they can’t handle cooling system, or the limit of capacity set by the manufacturer. High frequencies of processors can be achieved in light of the modes — for example, when you run the web browser.
The performance of the CPU, memory, and disk subsystem
All of the above can be summarized in one sentence: the CPU performance in a laptop depends on several factors, such as the power supply and the electrical parameters of the CPU. There is therefore nothing surprising in the fact that Core i7-10510U used in the ZenBook 14 UX434FL, it is not always faster than, for example, Core i7-8565U installed in the ZenBook 14 UX433FN. My advice: when choosing a ultrabook do not chase the passport characteristics of components such as the processor and graphics.
Don’t forget that during the performance of the CPU in the laptop is not only the chip, but also RAM and storage. In the ZenBook 14 UX434FL, by the way, used a very interesting SSD — Intel Optane HBRPEKNX0202A. In this drive, on one circuit Board located buffer memory capacity of 32 Gbytes and of the cell type QLC volume of 512 GB. On the one hand, SSD has not too high linear speeds of reading and writing (for standard NVMe), but the reading of 4K blocks is done at a very good speed more than 100 MB/s. In the ZenBook 14 UX434FL applied discrete graphics GeForce MX250. From GeForce MX150 it differs… nothing. Formally, the frequency is updated, the GPU needs to be higher on the “whole” 50 MHz (vs 1518 1468 MHz), but I once again draw your attention that we are dealing with the ultrabook. But because the frequency characteristics of GeForce GeForce MX150 and MX250 can differ considerably from model to model. Here in the ZenBook 14 UX434FL the declared frequency of the graphic chip is 937 (1038) MHz. In games it varies from 1493 to 1633 MHz. It is obvious that manufacturers of ultrabooks to “cut” the megahertz in the schedule in order to increase the efficiency of the cooling system and the autonomy of the device.
The GPU of the laptop in games is heated to a maximum of 76 degrees Celsius is a good indicator. In this case only up to 71 degrees Celsius heated the hot core Core i7-10510U. In General, cooler ZenBook 14 UX434FL fully copes with its task.
As for performance, the test model is slightly ahead of the ZenBook ultrabook 14 UX433FN that uses graphics GeForce MX150. This means that all of my arguments regarding the “new” NVIDIA is correct. Well, “SENuke” we could play in my spare time, although my list of priorities when choosing an ultrabook such as the “Speed games”, is one of the last places. The schedule in such devices is used to perform mainly the task of a different kind: the speed of the Internet browser, playback of various video formats and so on.

The laptop has a lithium-polymer battery of three cells with a total capacity of 50 W⋅h. the Manufacturer claims that the device can work up to 12.3 hours from a single battery charge. Our methodology includes more resource-intensive modes of operation laptops. For example, the brightness of the screen (the main consumer of electricity in any laptop) is 200 CD/m2 is quite comfortable figure for use in the daytime. In the end, the test version of the ZenBook 14 UX434FL stayed in the mode of web surfing, seven hours. I believe the stated 12+ hours realistically get, but will need to further reduce the screen brightness. This year we tested a few ASUS ultrabooks: ZenBook UX433FN 14, 15 UX533FD ZenBook and ZenBook S13 UX392FA. Bad devices are not among them, and novelty is not an exception. As all of these ultrabooks discussed in this article, the model has recognizable features and proprietary features of the devices the Taiwanese company. I have no complaints about the build quality of the laptop and its functionality. Testing showed that the ZenBook 14 UX434FL equipped with efficient cooling system, and a good keyboard, screen and housing. This ultrabook is long running on battery, and its performance is not worse than other models gathered on the same platform. In General, ASUS has turned out another good companion for life: light, compact and hardy.
And yet ZenBook 14 UX434FL there is one feature that even puts this above other ultrabook models ASUS (and other competitors), but it certainly makes it special. This, of course, talking about the second display ScreenPad 2.0. I have already described its features and functionality. Is it possible to live without such bells and whistles in ultrabot? Yet how can! However, some users, sure, the presence of a ScreenPad 2.0 definitely. So, ZenBook 14 UX434FL will find its fans.
