The review workstation, Fujitsu’s CELSIUS J580: quiet and compact
Workstation Fujitsu CELSIUS J580 has dimensions 332 × 338 × 89 mm, and weighs about 9 lbs. the Weight may slightly vary depending on the configuration — primarily from the number and type of drives. Can be installed both in horizontal and in vertical position. For the first case on one of the walls has four legs, and for the second the complete set includes two wide plastic stops, which are screwed to the housing.
The front panel has two 3.5 mm audio jacks for headphones and microphone, two USB 3.1 Gen2 Type A and 5.25” slot, which is optionally available for DVD/BD, basket for 3.5” HDD and smart card reader. In our case, he was engaged universal reader “24 in 1”.
The power button also serves as a system status indicator, and beneath it is an indicator of the drives. Highlighting here and there white and not too bright. The front panel also hides a small speaker and the air intake grille, which, perhaps, would not hurt easily removable dust filter.
The back wall displayed two video outputs DisplayPort and one DVI-D, six USB 3.0 ports and two Type A PS/2, two 3.5 mm audiohead and RJ-45 connector. As optional options, serial and parallel ports as well as eSATA. Output Gen USB 3.1 Type C can only be obtained with the installation of additional cards, which will occupy a single PCIe slot, and there are only two. Wireless adapters also be available after you install the card with the M. 2 slot. In addition, a PCIe slot, Fujitsu offers one Ethernet adapter and two serial ports.
For the physical protection provided by the Kensington Lock slot and loop for a lock that secures the side wall. Optionally available another castle on the wall and a detector opening of the enclosure, implemented in a button hidden behind the front panel, which can only be removed together with the side wall. To disassemble the enclosure and install or replace most components without use of tools — screwdriver need only a couple of places.
Motherboard Intel C246 custom developed specifically for this series of machines. It is her layout and made it possible to create a compact and relatively quiet workstation. The processor is located as close as possible to the front of the case and covered with a cubic heatsink with two heat pipes. The radiator is surrounded by a duct, attached to the front wall with one side and resting against a 60 mm fan on the other. That’s the whole cooling system chassis. Of course there is one fan built-in compact power supply (250 watts), but it is in the best case allows you to blow out a disc the basket.
And here there is a caveat. Fujitsu CELSIUS J580 marketed as ultra silent workstation, which during operation has a noise level of 19 to 21 dBA. But… all this while CPU usage is at 50 %, in the disk operations or when working in office applications. Indeed, in this mode, the device most often simply do not notice. However, with a full load on the CPU cooling system is already well audible, and with prolonged use AVX instructions at all and starts to whine so long to be near the device simply uncomfortable. In the latter case and the CPU temperature at the moment reaches its maximum for the model 100 °C.
Really WITH “start” in excess of 90° C — fan, which is the maximum level of noise is 37 dBA, gaining support and momentum to the CPU temperature stabilized at about 80 °C. At a temperature below 40 °C cooling system very silent. All this applies to our configuration with a brand new Intel Xeon E-2236 (6/12, 3,4/4,8 GHz, 12 MB L3) with a TDP of 80 watts. However, the same can be expected from other assemblies, as Fujitsu offers options from Intel Core i3-to i9 8100-9900, and the Intel Xeon E-2124 to E-2278G. Their TDP is in the range from 65 to 80 watts.
The load on the graphics card does not affect the work WITH the chassis. Anyway, with our NVIDIA Quadro P1000 with a TDP of 47 watts, which is closest analogue is the GTX 1050, in a separate GPU temperature monitoring and regulation of the speed of the processor fan, catching the air to the PCIe slots, probably, sense and no. The chassis supports the installation of card full-height, half-length, but without additional power. So GPU or any other adapter capacity constrained those 75 watts, which it can get through the slot.
Installation is via a riser card with a tough metal area. There are two versions of cards: with two card slots PCIe 3.0 x16 (x16 + x4) or with one PCIe 3.0 x16 and one PCI. The manufacturer offers a choice of either NVIDIA Quadro from P400 to P2200 or AMD Radeon WX 2100/3100/5100. They all belong to a professional entry level cards or to younger models average. It is strange that in the list of Matrox graphic cards for multi-monitor configurations.
To connect drives, the motherboard has five SATA ports-3, and one slot M. 2 2280 (SATA+PCIe). The basic configuration is a set of fast NVMe SSD for the OS and capacious SATA HDD. In our case it was 512 GB Western Digital PC SN720 and 2 TB Toshiba DT01ACA200, respectively. But the list of available storage subsystems is very large. There are sets of two M. 2 SSD for a RAID array, there are limits for installation of two 2.5 inch instead of one 3.5-inch drive has a storage capacity of as simpler, and are designed for increased load. There are even Intel Optane.

The basket for storage is swung sideways. In its design there are a couple of nice touches — leg for retention in the tilted position, and a rubber damper at the point of contact with the body. Other connectors on the motherboard quite a bit: USB 3.0 Type A + pads for serial and parallel ports, as well as for the TPM 2.0 and two USB 2.0 ports. Four slots for memory modules are located near the CPU and not really blown by. You can install up to 64 GB DDR4-2666 ECC. We got two regular 8-GB module made by Samsung.
Workstation pre-installed Windows 10 Pro for workstations (we had a 1909 version), but there is support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SUSE Enterprise Desktop. In addition, Fujitsu shall, after the completion of the life cycle series J580, test and support the work of future releases of Windows for 5 years. Separately specified, that it does not affect all configurations, as there is a dependence on third-party drivers. Spare parts the manufacturer is also willing to provide within 5 years after the closure of the production of this model.
Fujitsu DeskUpdate and Workplace Power

Software titles quite a bit. From third party programs is the ubiquitous trial version of Microsoft Office, WinZip, and McAfee, but the latter at least in the Lite version LiveSafe + WebAdvisor. From the manufacturer has a utility Fujitsu DeskUpdate, which allows you to regularly to look for updates for other software and firmware and install them in one click, and Workplace Power utility to further customize the power plans. In addition, almost all corporate platforms Fujitsu offers a package of Workplace Protect.
Security features the BIOS/UEFI

Other funds control and safety there is an automatic firmware update BIOS/UEFI from servers Fujitsu or from the local server, embedded TPM, the function of blocking USB ports, support Intel AMT in the presence of a suitable CPU (including the IP-KVM), as well as UEFI-utility-diagnostics of CPU, memory and HDD. Complete with workstation supplied a simple mouse and keyboard, four adapter Mini DisplayPort on DisplayPort, the documentation package and two power cables: one to connect the device to the mains and one for power supply, for example, of the monitor PD of the station.

In General, J580 is a characteristic corporate features. She has positioned Fujitsu CELSIUS series as a whole as professional solutions for the most demanding applications (CAD, GIS, 3D, media processing, and so on), but J580, which is the youngest model in the series, is still closer to a normal PC, although not everyone can reach out to her performance. So the main difference, in our opinion, all the same size and declared the reliability, which allows the use of J580 in classrooms, laboratories, control rooms and so on.

|Price||from 55 thousand rubles.|
Prices on Fujitsu Celsius J580 in Russia begin from 55 thousand rubles for the most simple assemblage, from which a record of performance to expect just not worth it. The estimated cost of our configuration is around 100-110 thousand rubles, for a business device more than acceptable. Components, obviously, should be selected on the basis of the tasks that will be assigned to the workstation. For example, to visualize in the test SPECviewperf 13 the difference between the performance of our machines and the official result for J580 with more powerful hardware — Intel Xeon E-2274G, NVIDIA Quadro P2200, 64 GB of RAM in most scenarios, no.
Against this background, interest and results P520 Lenovo ThinkStation tower case with the same GPU as us, but with a much more powerful and hot CPU. But in the test SPECworkstation 3 shows the difference of our indicators option J580 and the official result. For comparison, we can see the results of the HP Z2 G4 Tower Workstation, which is equal to our number of cores and threads CPU Intel Core i7-8700K (but more hot), but the GPU is more powerful. And of course, he also “Packed” in a tower case where to organize a good cooling is relatively simple.

Note that for SPECwpc in the settings was the creation of two threads per core, and for SPECviewperf V-Sync is not forced off. In the settings Windows was exhibited power policy “Maximum performance”, but BIOS settings were left auto policy is the regulation of frequency of rotation of the fan, not the mode of maximum cooling, which typically are benchmarks. Full SPEC reports are provided in the archive.

System-wide benchmarks were also involved PCMark 10 (separately and without OpenCL acceleration), 4 Geekbench for CPU and GPU, 5 Geekbench for CPU and GPU. Part of the tests that are not included in the set SPECwpc were made for the future. They mainly relate to the CPU, as GeForce younger we didn’t have any and compare them, in General, there is nothing. Fresh data and parameters taken from a review of AMD Ryzen 7 3800X. Testing was conducted with the following drivers:
- NVIDIA DCH 441.28 (ODE)
- Intel Management Engine Interface 19220.127.116.116
- Intel Chipset 10.1.16.7

Fujitsu once again proved that the development and use of own and non-standard components will allow you to create a product that compares favorably with the mass solutions of the same class. CELSIUS J580 definitely ahead of the competition in terms of compactness and design — both external and internal — while maintaining performance level. While slightly smaller selection of components is a consequence of the layout of the chassis and not market positioning.
As for quietness, the laws of physics will not deceive you: Yes, most of the time a workstation is almost inaudible, but under absolute load cooling system to cope, but makes a noise loud enough. In our opinion, the most interesting use case — installation of machines with less hot and cheaper CPU in a classroom, control room or even in an office where silence and reliability play a big role. The more that pricing of Fujitsu for this series is more than reasonable given the costs of Assembly in Germany or Japan.
