I want to know everything: the 10 largest Russian-language online encyclopedias
We continue the series of articles on educational subjects. Earlier we told you about the web learning management systems and video portals for students, shared information about the platform for assessing the quality of education, and also studied the range of Google Play and App Store on the subject of mobile apps that can provide invaluable assistance in education, development of school and University disciplines. Today’s review is dedicated to online encyclopedias — irreplaceable assistants to expand the horizons and find answers to all sorts of questions.
“Great Russian encyclopedia” (BDT). The project, implemented by presidential decree under the scientific leadership of the Russian Academy of Sciences with the support of the Ministry of culture of the Russian Federation. The basis of the electronic version of the BDT is based on an augmented and updated materials of the same name printed editions, numbering 35 volumes and containing more than 80 thousand articles on all the most important aspects, phenomena and concepts in life and human activities. For the convenience of working with collegiate data, use full text search, categories and articles list (wordlist). You can also upload the articles in PDF format and fast copying of references that can come in handy in the preparation of term papers and qualification papers.
The electronic version of the “Great Russian encyclopedia” is from April of 2016 and in the next three years, the project may undergo significant changes. In particular, at the highest level deals with the question of the inclusion of BDT in the composition of the national scientific and educational interactive encyclopedic portal, work on which has already started and should be completed in 2022. The idea of creating a new informational resource supported by the head of state, speaking for the creation of the Internet alternative and reliable source of encyclopedic information for Russian users. The cost of implementing such a project are estimated at 2 billion rubles, which will be borrowed from the Federal budget.
Russian “Wikipedia”. The Russian language section of popular encyclopedic resource, needs no introduction and developed by enthusiasts from around the world. Project Wikipedia in the Russian language exists since may 2001 and currently has over 1.5 million articles on various subjects. According to this indicator, the Russian version of Wikipedia is among the ten largest language sections of the site, and the Russian-speaking community of the online encyclopedia is the sixth busiest in the world and shows the daily growth. Being open and available for editing project, Wikipedia often comes into the view of the reviewers that are critical of the resource for the excessive subjectivity of some materials and the inaccuracy of the information. That, however, did not confuse Internet users, often referencing “Wikipedia” as a source of information.
“The universal encyclopedia of Cyril and Methodius”. Encyclopaedic multimedia website, developed by the company “Cyril and Methodius”. The core of the resource are educational and informative articles focused on a wide range of readers. The encyclopedia contains extensive information on all major fields of knowledge: history, science, technology, literature, art and culture. Here you can also find historical, socio-economic and geographical information on all countries of the world and articles about the biggest personalities of all times and peoples. Currently, “Universal encyclopedia of Cyril and Methodius” includes more than 240 thousand encyclopedic and reference materials, and more than 70 thousand articles, more than 110 thousands of pictures and media objects (video and audio fragments, maps, animations and interactive tables). Among the authors of the encyclopedia — renowned scientists, historians, writers, journalists, photographers, experts, and publicists. Also in the development of the resource involved the enthusiasts to volunteer the hosting and improve articles of the encyclopedia.
The Encyclopedia “Krugosvet”. Universal popular scientific encyclopedia, which tells about all the important facts of the past and present. Among the features of the resource: an impressive number of scientific articles, translations of outstanding world scientists and the availability of educational quizzes and tests in mathematics, physics, history, botany, biology, geography, medicine, various fields of culture, architecture, music, literature and cinema. The creators of the encyclopedia “Krugosvet” claim that their website recommended by the Ministry of education and science of the Russian Federation as the required textbook for in-depth study number of subjects (disciplines) of self-education, preparation of abstracts, scientific reports and messages. Sounds convincing, but no information about this on the official portal of Ministry of education and science we have found.
“Rubricon”. Information and reference system that combines a lot of encyclopedias and dictionaries. In the “Rubricon” is presented by “Great Soviet encyclopedia”, “Illustrated encyclopedic dictionary”, “Russian encyclopedia”, “Encyclopedic dictionary of Brockhaus and Efron”, medical encyclopedia, art encyclopedia, and many other reference books, the total number of which includes several dozen. The encyclopedic database is huge, but in an open access laid out only a small part of it. For full service you need to apply and pay for a subscription.
“Academician”. A free alternative to the above-mentioned “Rubricon” containing the actual information in almost all spheres of human activity. Includes thematic encyclopedia in geography, biology, philosophy, Economics, history, music, technology and other fields of knowledge. In addition to encyclopedias and reference materials on the website “Academic” can be found in open access an impressive number of dictionaries, including foreign language.
Encyclopedic archive on the website of the Presidential library. Resource for history buffs of Russia. Contains information about what was happening in the country event (including copies of archival documents and photos), famous people of the territory of the Russian Federation, regions and areas of the state device, information about the economic, social, political and cultural history of Russia in different years. A distinctive feature of the portal is the collection of abstracts, textbooks and periodicals of historical subjects.
“IT-encyclopedia “virus”. Information service dedicated to the basics of information security. The encyclopedia consists of two main sections — knowledge base and Glossary. The knowledge base presented articles describing common cyber threats and a brief historical note on how they have evolved over time. The Glossary contains definitions of various terms frequently used on the pages of online resources for information security. Want to know who and what creates malware? What is the danger of unwanted messages in email and social networks? What is “vulnerability” and how it is used by cyber criminals? The answers to these and other issues are collected in “IT-encyclopedia “virus”.
“Stanford encyclopedia of philosophy”. Russian-language resource with translation of selected articles of one of the world’s largest and most authoritative encyclopedia of philosophy The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Posted on the website any materials published with permission of the publisher, “Stanford philosophical encyclopedia” and represent a full-scale review of the work on a particular problem, concept, or philosopher. Noteworthy is the fact that in the translation of articles was attended by experts of the faculty of philosophy of Moscow state University. M. V. Lomonosov together with colleagues from St. Petersburg state University (SPbSU), National research University “Higher school of Economics” (HSE) and the Institute of philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IPhRAS).
“World encyclopedias”. Information portal, the main value of which is a directory of links to various Russian encyclopedias. Presented on the website the registry encyclopedias constantly maintained up to date and for the convenience of the search is divided into categories, covering topics such as linguistics, linguistics, natural and applied Sciences, medicine, technology, geography and more. The portal also includes a news feed, showing all the interesting events in the encyclopedic world.
