Regular readers 3DNews know about our regular column “Optimal gaming PC”, which task — to show people what they are capable systems that are offered in the series “Computer of the month”. So, at the end of August, we considered a gaming PC for 100 thousand rubles. The trick of any such article — a comparison of several configurations, which can cost more or less, further identifying the optimal set of components that fall within the designated budget.
Today could also be described as “best gaming PC”, but to use this phrase for the system that costs almost a quarter of a million rubles, to be honest, I don’t want to. The main focus of the article is placed on working cords 8-core CPU Core i9-9900K and GeForce RTX 2080 Ti is the most productive and the most expensive accessories present in the mass segment to date. Of course, the rest of the iron in the Assembly should be equal in status to the main violins in our “ensemble”. Well, let’s take a more detailed look at what the system unit can be spent a quarter of a million rubles.
The rationale for the selection of components
For the first time configuration, which will be discussed further, I spoke in the October issue of “Computer of the month” in the framework of the so-called extreme build. Let me remind you, this category appeared in August 2017. More than a year ago the prosperous gamers could spend more than a quarter of a million rubles for the 8-core Core i7-7820X, a pair of GeForce GTX 1080 Ti and other related components. Then under extreme Assembly appeared AMD Ryzen Threadripper. In each issue of “Computer of the month” I always pay attention to the time that the processor belonging to the category HEDT, gaming PC little use. With the identical configuration, the system with, say, Core i7-8700K will show results not worse, and in most cases even better. So extreme Assembly in 2017 and 2018, I recommended someone who is not only fun, but also works at the computer. In December and early 2019 is the most expensive system in the “Computer of the month” will look as shown in the table below. As you can see, now in extreme build offers 8-core Intel Core i9-9900K and GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. The system was definitely more productive, but more about this we will discuss in the second part. And while I note two main points: first, the extreme system is now based on the mass of the LGA1151 platform-v2; secondly, the Assembly is offered only one configuration. Of course, it is important to choose the right and other components. I’m sure you understand that extreme build is not about savings, and if you plan to build yourself a system, you can act as you please. And yet some of the fundamental aspects in the preparation of this configuration are present. We will talk about them next.
The choice of processor, in my opinion, were the most obvious. Core i9-9900K (link to review) is the most productive chip that can be used in mass platforms. Let me remind you, according to the classification of “Computer of the month” for mass are AMD AM4 and Intel LGA1151-v2. At boot all eight cores, this chip operates at a frequency of 4.7 GHz. Even without a noticeable increase in the number of threads, as you can see, we get a good gain of 400 MHz, if you compare Core i9-9900K with LGA1151 ex-flagship Core i7-8700K. I fully agree with the opinion of my colleagues Ilya Gavrichenkov that the 16-line Coffee Lake Refresh suitable for professional work.
Alternative options for Core i9-9900K abound. It can be 8-core processors Core i7-9700K and Ryzen 7 2700X, as well as 6-core Core i7-8700K. The first two chips are recommended in the “Computer of the month” within the maximum build, but at the same time, nobody prevents you to use them together with a graphics card of GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. At the time of this writing, an OEM version of Core i9-9900K cost quite a lot — 45 000 rubles. Of course, buying the same Core i7-9700K will allow us to save money. All of these options, of course, we have tested the results presented in the second part of the article.
Other models of CPUs, so to speak, and act in a more heavy weight category. Of course, we are talking about the HEDT platform and Intel AMD TR4 LGA2066. The emergence of Core i9-9900K, frankly, put an end to the prospects of such a model as Core i7-7820X (about 6-core Core i7-7800X and utterly useless 4-core units are generally silent). In the region of 50 000 rubles from Intel chips for the platform LGA2066 simply not in the same “Regarde” asking 80 000 rubles for a 12-core Core i9-7920X. If we consider the platform TR4, over 34 500 rubles, you can take 12-core Ryzen Threadripper 1920, and 60 500 rubles — 16-nuclear Ryzen Threadripper 1950X. Both chipmakers are positioning their products (HEDT platform) as a solution for gamers, so the extreme cost of the Assembly can be easily doubled. However, I repeat once again: to consider options with LGA2066 and TR4 makes sense if you need the system unit is not only for games, but also to perform serious computing tasks.
To achieve such a high frequency of the Intel Core i9-9900K and Core i7-9700K even without overclocking helps the presence of solder under the heat-spreading lid. Intel returned to the interface after nearly eight years! However, solder in the new Coffee Lake quite often criticized, as not every 8-core Intel LGA1151 platform-v2 could at least overclock to 4.9 GHz. As you can see, there is a small headroom for overclocking — at least until 4.9 GHz. The second major problem you may face when using 8-core processors Refresh Coffee Lake, is the increased load on the power subsystem of the motherboard. So to buy a Core i9-9900K with a GeForce Ti RTX 2080 and save money on this component of the PC will not work. Readers 3DNews such variant of saving of funds, I definitely will not recommend.
The fact that in the stable operation of Core i9-9900K at a frequency of 4.7 GHz, the power consumption of the system unit in the program LinX rises to 200-220 watts. With the choice of RAM, everything is very simple. In the king-PC must be installed 32 GB of RAM with a further opportunity to increase DDR4 twice. Our tests show that modern games even in Ultra HD is still enough for 16 Gbytes of RAM — and this entry in the system it is possible to save. In my understanding, installing a 32 GB will allow you to close the topic with a lack of RAM in the near future until the moment of obsolescence of the whole system.
Of course, in extreme build uses a fast dual kit “brain” of the standard DDR4-3200.
For quite some time under extreme build uses a SSD Samsung PRO MZ 970-V7P1T0BW capacity of 1 terabyte. I think that this SSD is enough to install and operating system, and some of your favorite games.

I note that comfortable playing in 4K resolution using ray tracing, unfortunately, will not work. It remains to determine with the power supply and case. In the first case, it’s pretty simple — you take the solution good quality. Core i9-9900K in overclocking to 5 GHz in a serious level tasks LinX and Prime95 consumes in the area of 300-330 watts. Video card — 220 W average, 360 W peak. It turns out the PSU with a capacity of 1 kW has some stock, which is enough to install a second GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. Case you can choose anyone you want to see every day beside him. We are talking about an extreme build — don’t see the point here any way to limit myself. It is important that the device provide proper cooling of all system components. For this article, I chose the model MasterCase Cooler Master H500M. About it and also about the other components, of which was eventually assembled a test PC, we will discuss the details further.

Table with the list of components is, of course, well, but newcomers are not always able to imagine actually will look like their gaming PC. Therefore, for the section “Optimal gaming PC” I always collect a real system, and then test them. This time the focus turned components companies are Cooler Master, G. Skill, MSI and Samsung. Listed in the table components are fully compatible with each other. The process of assembling the system unit passed without any delay and complications, but if you suddenly want to collect exactly the same system, I recommend to proceed in the following sequence:
- first, run all necessary cables power supply all in the eyes of the body;
- then secure the radiator LSS to the upper wall of the shell with fans;
- next, install the motherboard and secure the water block to the CPU socket.

The power subsystem MSI MEG Z390 GODLIKE made on a 16+2 and is controlled through PWM controllers IR35201 Infineon and Rohm Semiconductor PV3205. Quick testing results Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML360R RGB I quoted earlier. They show that this maintenance-free DLC is quite enough for efficient cooling 8-core Core i9-9900K. In addition, the “dropsy” there is some margin that will allow you to overclock the CPU when needed.
Naturally, the cooling efficiency of Cooler Master MasterLiquid RGB ML360R affected by the availability of fairly large three-section radiator. Its length is 394 mm, and a thickness of 27 mm. So the choice of water cooling system, motherboard and the case, definitely make sure that all components are compatible with each other. However, the LSS is equipped with a universal mounting system, so no problem to “make friends” with these chassis platforms as LGA1151 and AM4 — if only the radiator got.
Included with the cooler are three fan MasterFan120AB ARGB (DF1202512RFUN). As the name suggests, they are equipped with RGB led, so each “blower” departs for two cables: one 4-pin to be connected to the motherboard, the second is 3-pin, it is connected to the control unit backlight, or directly to the motherboard.
Twelve RGB LEDs and is equipped with a water block combined with a pump. Interestingly, the circle with the Cooler Master logo is detachable, so it can always be flipped in the correct position regardless of the location of “dropsy” in inside the case.
