The new version of Call of Cthulhu is not only based on the world and mythology, invented by Howard F. Lovecraft, but is an adaptation of the official Board RPG from Chaosium. Even the first game was called Call of Cthulhu: The Official Video Game, but apparently the creators decided that for the convenience of a better name to reduce. Although the project is on track to release seems to have lost much more than the subtitle: he had to change and the developer, and, repeatedly, the release date. The last move pushed the release for almost a year, and by the fact that we have the impression that all altered in a hurry.
Despite the name, directly to the literary “Call of Cthulhu” new project has an indirect relation to, and coincides with the book elements seem rather pleasant references. Boston, 1924. Just died down a terrible war, and Edward pierce is trying to hide at the bottom of a bottle of Scotch from all seen horror. He earns a living working as a private detective, but lately not enough. Interesting and does not fall to.
But here’s to the hangover Edward looks famous magnate to investigate the death of daughter Sarah Hawkins. The man is sure that the case is more serious than a fire resulting from a tragic accident, according to police. All because of the mysterious pictures and notes sent by Sarah’s father right before his death. The main character is intrigued, and this is enough to go to the island Darkwater. The place, frankly, depressing: dirty streets stagger drunken sailors, over the roofs of the low hanging murky clouds, and, wherever you look, completely gloomy landscapes.
Call of Cthulhu starts off as a classic Noir detective. Edward communicates with surly people, trying to get an idea about the local people and the victim of the fire. In a modest-size fishing village supported the illusion of a living space.
Immediately reveals a role based game. One of the first objectives of a detective is to go to an abandoned warehouse. However, this was difficult to do because it is on the territory controlled by the local bootlegging gang that effectively runs the city. But you should carefully explore the surroundings, as there are at least five options to sneak into a secure building. Each approach tests the level of certain skills, so your way inside depends on the initial distribution of characteristics.
Such a flexible approach to tasks is pleasantly surprising. It seems that many of the little things really matter. Evidence that you happened to notice, after an hour can open up a new option in the dialog and another small step closer to solving the mystery. After all, many on the island Darkwater not what it seems. Sorry, the Call of Cthulhu is not a game which wants to appear in the first few hours.
The episode with the warehouse is the only one where the RPG-component is revealed in all its glory, the following can be counted at best a couple of possible solutions. The second half of the Call of Cthulhu finally turned into a classic simulator walk with mediocre hide and seek, and the only thing that remains from RPG — roleplaying. The character of Edward you form your actions: from your answers and actions depends, whether there will be a pier considered a detective or turn into a nervous drunk.
It is almost impossible to sanity in the face of supernatural horror — this is the leitmotif of most of Lovecraft’s stories built gameplay mechanics of Call of Cthulhu. Sanity is a precious resource that is spent every time you witness terrible scenes or learn more about the Ancients. To replenish anymore. Anyway, in the story, you will face the horrors of the other world. But a grain of common sense still can be saved, including depends on the ending of the story.
It is strange that the idea of a crazy good beat in gameplay, but just in the plot of unimaginable horror has no place. Call of Cthulhu sample of 2018 really wants to be a mass product, and so strongly committed to it, and then slipping into banality. It sorely lacks the oppressive atmosphere — the creation Studio Cyanide cannot put on a par with either Amnesia, or even with Layers of Fear. But give a look in R’lyeh (probably) and a quick look at the silhouette of Cthulhu (so blurred that I honestly also doubt that showed it).
Unfortunately, Call of Cthulhu could not be a solid piece in terms of mechanics and part of the narrative. After a promising introduction, the game gradually falling apart. Due to the dynamic plot you will most likely get to the finals, but it’s worth a minute to think about how in the script reveals a lot of holes. Why on earth was to hide from the bandits, if the hero all the time had a gun?
* * *
It seems that Call of Cthulhu was supposed to be far more and more than turned out in the end. But at some point the game just does not work in the originally conceived form, and last year it collected again, throwing out whole chunks. In the second half is particularly noticeable: locations turn into a short corridor, and the whole head can turn into one dialogue Yes, a pair of rollers. It’s a shame, because the potential of the game was huge.
- a promising opening hours, which last until the fourth Chapter;
- the opportunity to form the character of the hero;
- the dynamics of the plot.
- the lack of an atmosphere of fear, and indeed any stress;
- many logical holes in the script;
- the game almost immediately forgets about the RPG-elements.
Thanks to Unreal Engine 4.0 the game looks nice and often paints a beautiful, albeit gloomy, scenery — thanks to the filters and quality lighting. But models, people lack detail, and animation accuracy.
The sound sometimes keeps half of the atmosphere, but not in the case of Call of Cthulhu: no one disturbing motive, no interesting decisions from the engineer.
Nominally before us is a mixture of detective, role playing, horror and stealth. But nameshow so many elements, the authors have not been able to turn Call of Cthulhu into a single product.
Horror role-playing middle-class. Cthulhu will be disappointed.
