Little big world
Where appropriate to compare Starlink with No Man’s Sky, which she recalls from the first minute. Only instead of a hundred thousand million star systems here are only seven planets. Nothing seems procedurally generated, and all locations differ from each other in flora and fauna. Therefore, when landing on land I see cute and pretty creatures, but not strange and creepy creatures, which somehow made from body parts of different animals.
Unlike No Man’s Sky, where you just throw on a random planet and offer to entertain yourself, Starlink is a full linear story. Originality and quality, it is no different: when a star system called “Atlas” team good guys “Alliance”, a group of enemies — “the Forgotten Legion”, there is a feeling that the fantasy of the writers in serious trouble. And then nothing changes, everything as trite and clichéd: the ship’s captain is kidnapped, we in as one of his assistants travel with the team to raise an army, and then comes the happy ending. But the videos are great — like the animated series look.
The screen holds only the gameplay is good at something, and in some ways leaves much to be desired. Once in open space, you can freely fly in any direction, and then without any loading screens to land on any of the available planets. It should be noted immediately that the pilot did not leave the ship under any circumstances: the exploration of planets, contact with other life forms and the collection of resources occur exclusively during flights. And it’s convenient — there’s no need to run to your vehicle after a long flight.
Each planet is a big region with many traditional games Ubisoft content. Then someone’s base need to protect, then you need to extract the encrypted data, simultaneously fighting off enemies. By and large, all the same, this problem is observed in the story missions. Flock there, the victory, take it, pay for it — instructions are monotonous and routine. Shortly after the start, the player will allow you to build on the site of the destroyed hives “Legion” structures: in the presence of the Observatory will disappear “fog of war” on the map of the planet, and the Armory will protect the place from attack of the enemies — they could try to recapture territory, until you are not around.
But the game still exciting for several reasons. First, Starlink is very stylish — sometimes it is reminiscent of No Man’s Sky, but it is clear that all of these bases, the enormous trees and outposts with scurrying robots drawn and arranged with taste by hand, not randomly. When the player frees the area from “Legion”, it is completely transformed and the atmosphere becomes more cheerful. Creatures try to stay in groups and often stroll near the water. And what wonderful plants here sometimes!
Secondly, the combat system is done well, and even though it tried to tie the stupid toys. Your ship has two guns — it is assumed that the controller you attach the two pieces of plastic and, if necessary, change them for others, but you can play without it. The pause menu to change weapons, it can be done directly during the battle. By pressing L2 you activate the left gun, press R2, right. After some time they get hot but cool down quickly. The ship also has a supply of energy that is expended to either accelerate, or to activate the shield, not just to save my vessel from a hail of enemy shells.
A special approach
System with switching guns is interesting because it can help to combine different elements to achieve different results in battles with opponents. There are ice-covered monsters that can’t hurt the ice the same gun, but the fiery projectiles inflict significant damage. If someone does manage to freeze, you can then shower him with missiles. There is a gun creates a large purple box, sucks in the player ship, and all the people standing around him. And the field is allowed to “mix” with fire or cold, to damage multiple enemies.
The controls are very convenient: the boat responds quickly on pressing, and shooting is not boring. Over time, you will earn experience as for the ship, and for each individual gun that will be able to install modifications without small RPG component here, could not do. These modes fall at every step, they give them for every minor action: if you cleared the database, did a side job even just opened accidentally found the box. Some modifications increase rate of fire, some speed up the recovery of shields or faster cool weapons. They are divided into several categories, and fashion with the same degree of rarity can be combined to create more powerful variations.
Enemy types are not so many, but meeting with each new enemy becomes an event. Reading what your opponent weaknesses, you put the appropriate gun, choose the appropriate modification, fighting to surround him with the trifle, and then switch to the main goal: to jump, do barrels, hide to recover shields is always fun. Particularly good battle with Primary — special creatures of large size, fighting which are generally divided into several stages.
And most importantly — the game has space battles! During the flight from one planet to another, you can not only crash into a few asteroids, but also stumble on the trap wall with a few holes. If you successfully fly through, nothing happens, but caught in the net will meet with space pirates, a dozen of which will immediately try to destroy the ship alone. But with two guns to defeat these crooks is easy. Those pirates, by the way, terrorizing the inhabitants of the system: by destroying their ships, you will know the location of asylum interplanetary filibusters, the cleaning of which on a reward.
But at some point you have to go back to the story and do the implementation dreary tasks. If you think that the latest Assassin’s Creed are forced to engage in “side effects” too often, here with this all the trouble. In the Starlink minor qusti are randomly generated — you just press one of the buttons on the controller and hear someone needs something from somewhere to bring. At some point I was asked to find five materials, which are used not only to build structures but also to buy new skills. If warned about this in advance, I wouldn’t have to travel across the planet in search of bases that can be released.
In addition, the level of the story missions do not always correspond to character level. This is never stated, but it is advisable to explore and free from “Legion” and pirates everything that comes his way. Otherwise, you’ll land the next job unprepared, and your ship will instantly blown to hell. A few hours later, when I was level 10, I came to the dreadnought (the so-called ships “Legion”, which become weaker after the murder of the Primes) and the plot had to destroy it, but I have met the enemy ships are level 15. To survive in such a situation is practically impossible, and after death I was reborn so far that to go back and try again is better to go to train “on cats”.
Many of your impressions Starlink will depend on how you feel about games with a beautiful open world where pretty fast, the process becomes monotonous. Yes, to fight with the enemies and switch between different guns is not boring even after a dozen hours, and to fly over the surface of the planet, scan funny animals and look for high-quality versions for your boat is very exciting, but the plot will probably disappoint, the main tasks is also not impress. Starlink is possible to recognize a good “killing time”, where instead of listening to stupid conversations it is better to turn the music on and just travel the solar system without worrying about collecting resources and acid rain, as in that other similar game.
- a large star system with seven unique planets;
- beautiful location, where everything is placed manually, and not through procedural generation;
- fun combat system, through which to fight never boring;
- exciting fights with larger and stronger opponents.
- to mediocre stories instantly lose interest;
- the world is different, but fun at the same;
- between story missions you have to do sad things for the sake of increasing level.
The graphics in Starlink is not far advanced, but the game looks nice on planets beyond. And for the complete lack of loading screens it also worth to praise.
Musical composition is hard to remember an hour later after exiting the game. But the great actors voiced the characters.
The passing will take from 15 to 20 hours, and it will be great time if the monotony doesn’t bother you. The game is good, but there is a feeling that the release is a bit rushed, which is why the planet is sometimes a little too similar to each other in terms of content.
Supports split screen mode, but not online co-op.
The cosmic arcade for the most unpretentious. Well, if you just want to fly in space and visit beautiful planets, fighting pirates and aliens. About this a imagined No Man’s Sky before its release, although Ubisoft entertainment area is not so huge.
