Since then, 10 years ago appeared first mirrorless camera, the debate about their role in the development of the market of photographic equipment is not quenched. Someone once said about the great potential of a new type of cameras, but the arguments of the defenders DSLRs initially looked very noticeable: optical viewfinder, better autofocus and, most importantly, a full-size sensor are the main advantages that are most often voiced when comparing the classics with mirrorless cameras. And indeed, despite the fact that all the leading manufacturers, paying tribute to progress, sooner or later created his series of besserglik (in the case of Canon’s family of Canon EOS M), the quality of the images and functionality for a long time did not reach the level required by professionals.

The situation in 2013 has changed the company Sony, releasing their first full-frame buttercake – A7 and A7r. It became apparent that, despite the relative compactness of the case before us is a serious tool, capable of delivering serious results. However, it took 5 years before such giants as Nikon and Canon released their “serious” mirrorless cameras. After presents in August Z6 and Z7 Nikon, Canon produced a solution – the R EOS with full-frame image sensor resolution MP 30.3. And, it seems, now finally it is time to recognize that 2018 was a watershed in the world of photography.

The main features of the EOS R

New lens mount. As in the case of new buttercake Nikon, a key innovation of the EOS R was specially developed lens mount RF. It is based on the previous standard Canon EF used in SLR cameras, and has the same diameter of 54 mm, but you’ll be shortened to 20 mm (compared to 44 mm for the EF) operating segment and increased contacts from 8 to 12. Additional contacts are designed, in particular, to transfer data about the aberrations of a lens integrated in the new cameras the image enhancement system. The bayonet RF using released simultaneously with the camera adapter, you can use optics series EF and EF-s Lenses Canon EF-M, developed by previously released besserglik not supported due to the shorter flange.

New optics. At the same time with the new camera Canon has unveiled the first four designed specifically for lens: Canon RF 24—105mm f/4L IS USM, Canon RF 50mm f/1.2 L USM, Canon RF 28—70mm f/2L USM, Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro.

As we can see, betting on the company makes the most popular focal length and aperture. The first two lenses from this list we were able to test, they made most of frames in the review.

Adapters. Canon offers users three options adapters to use optics systems EF and EF-S mount lenses with the new RF: a simple adapter, the adapter with a customizable control ring and the adapter with a slot for filters. The last relevant when working with lenses like “fish eye”, which is due to the convex front lens does not allow the use of traditional filters.

The new AF system. According to the manufacturer, Canon EOS used R the world’s fastest hybrid system auto focus on a proprietary Dual Pixel technology. The stated response time autofocus is 0.05 s. the sensitivity of the auto focus is retained when the lighting level down to-6EV.

The number of focus points is amazing – 5655 (for comparison: the Nikon Z7 — 493 phase point, the Sony A7 III — 683 phase and 425 points contrast-detection autofocus). The camera has a facial recognition system, there is also the autofocus on the eyes.

The new controls. One of the interesting developments of the company Canon, which had never met before on any camera – multi-touch pad touchpad located on the back side of the camera. The purpose of the touchpad, the user can specify independently, it is possible to configure the touch separately to the left and right of the screen and slide your finger along the toolbar.

In addition, the lenses like RF there is a control ring that you can also “hang” a convenient function such as the shift of the diaphragm.

New shooting mode. The Canon EOS R we first see shooting mode Fv. In fact it is a familiar program mode in which shutter speed, aperture and ISO set by the camera automatically, but you have the option of transformation in the Av or Tv mode selectable: manual installation of one or more of the parameters for automatic adjustment of the others.

No inner stabilizer. For Canon cameras this is normal, but if you compare the new product with its closest competitors – bassically full frame Nikon and Sony, the absence of the stabilizer is somewhat unexpected.

Design and ergonomics

The days when the word “mirrorless” associated with compact, long gone. EOS R does not look miniature camera and combined with a fairly heavy lens (the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2 L USM, which weight – almost a kilogram) is not much different in visual and tactile terms from DSLRs. Own weight – 660 grams, dimensions width, depth and height respectively of 135.8 × 98,3 × 84.4 per mm. the Body is made of magnesium alloy, dust – and splash-proof.

On the left side are slots for the headphone and microphone connection, USB Type-C HDMI and a connector for a wired remote.

On the right side is a slot for a memory card. Like Nikon Z7/Z6, provided by the use of only one memory card, which is surprising. But the standard of the ordinary: SD/SDHC/SDXC.

Located on top of the following controls (left to right): drive power on/off camera, hot Shoe, monochrome OLED screen (which has two display modes: abbreviated menu or main exposure settings), the screen light button, recording button, button control lock, Mode button + wheel selector is responsible for selecting a shooting mode wheel, changing the settings, function key and shutter button.

On the rear panel is the menu button, the viewfinder and the LCD screen, touch panel, referred to above, the key force activation of the auto-focus button, change the type displayed on the information display, pressing zoom and focus point selection, control keys, or delete snapshots, as well as five-way navigation joystick.

The bottom is a tripod socket and battery compartment. They are located at a considerable distance from each other, which gives the possibility to change the battery without removing the camera from the tripod.

Almost all controls new Canon camera – customizable, the user can distribute them the favorite function. And configured controls separately for photo and video modes. In the menu to demonstrate the basic configurable controls and functions that you can assign, the implementation of convenient, user should not get lost, even if it such manipulations.

Interface, display and the viewfinder

Menu arranged the traditional Canon by the way: there are six main sections, each of which has its sub-items. It turned out to be multi-level as features in the camera a lot and almost everyone has the ability to fine tune. If suddenly Canon EOS R will be your first serious camera – it can be confusing, but those who understand the General logic of different settings, and especially those who go to R EOS with Canon DSLRs, should be mastered without problems.

The quick menu is invoked and due to the Central navigation joystick, and using the touch screen, the Q button located in the upper right corner.

Screen EOS R diagonal 3.15 inches has a resolution of 2.1 million pixels. Display placed on a hinge that allows you to rotate it on 180 degrees (which in particular allows its use for shooting selfies). When developing a screen applied technology Canon Clear View II, which has to save from the glare. The screen is equipped with touch surface that provides the ability to set the focus point via touch, and this function is also available when shooting through the viewfinder – in this case, the screen is simply used as a touchpad (Yes, another one).

The camera uses an OLED viewfinder with a resolution of 3.69 million points. Coverage of the scene — 100%. Despite the fact that the optical viewfinder is often called the advantage of DSLRs that can’t be beat, it’s not so simple: for example, when shooting in low-light conditions, the electronic version wins as it gives the opportunity to see the subjects. Despite the fact that most of the time was convenient for me to operate using the main screen, the viewfinder also made a good impression – the image looks detailed and bright.

With this camera I fully moved away from the familiar DSLRs shooting through the viewfinder almost all the time was removed with the help of the touch screen was convenient for me to build a composition, to be able to rotate the screen for shooting from low point to see the picture in real time and focus, setting a point by the touch of a finger. The screen is good enough to shoot in the sun, even when I wanted to switch to shooting through the viewfinder was quite small.

For me to get used to the ergonomics of the R EOS was not difficult – in spite of some differences from the SLR models of Canon, the General gist is preserved. The camera is comfortable to hold with one hand – here, as in SLRs, there is a large ledge to grab. With lens RF Canon 24—105mm f/4L IS USM camera weight is distributed is quite balanced. Canon RF 50mm f/1.2 L USM outweighs that makes the job a little less comfortable, but not critical. The camera is quite large, but the controls on its body is rendered not so much, which allowed the manufacturer is not “granulate” in the end, the keys and selectors large, making them easy to handle by touch.

Most interesting, of course, was to try a completely new element – the touchpad for the thumb of the right hand. To be honest, the idea seemed interesting, but it made me rather disappointed. My problem was that I installed it on the touchpad control ISO (left – to decrease sensitivity, right – increase), but the fact of the matter is when you work touched a finger of his right side. Notice it at once, and I was irritated by the situation, when I got in the picture is not the ISO that was set initially. The only way is to disable part of the panel at all (but once something is created it needs to function, otherwise it makes no sense) or to activate the unlocking of the panel after the second retention finger.

But the opportunity to “hang” some sort of setting on the lens ring – in my opinion, good find. Lenses with the iris adjustment ring I have always evoked sympathy.

Work offline

To Canon EOS used R already familiar to many DSLRs Li-ion battery LP-E6N capacity 14 WH (1865 mAh, 7.2 V). According to the manufacturer the battery life 370 shots by the method of CIPA.

I managed to test the camera under conditions of intense reportage photography. A fully charged battery is dead after about 4 hours, and it was made 1200 frames in RAW+JPEG, the screen was almost always on, it was focus. The result is excellent, but of course, if you plan on shooting for the whole day, it is wise to bring a few charged batteries.
