Last year Ubisoft showed everyone that the series Assassin’s Creed is not just went on hiatus after the release of Baldur’s gate. Released in the autumn of Origins impressed with not only the magnitude but also the updated game mechanics, through which overexposed the process Assassin’s Creed was literally transformed. Changed combat system, filled up side quests, the map, even for a week not to study, — in a word, disappointed was not enough. And after one year we received Assassin’s Creed Odyssey — same great game, but in the scenery of Ancient Greece. At first glance, it seems an exact copy of its predecessor, but offers much more.
Odyssey departs from the usual series formula even further than it did in Origins. And it is evident from the very beginning, when the player is asked to make a choice whether he wants to play for the Alexios or Cassandra. Unlike the Syndicate, where in between Evie and Jacob was able to switch freely, here you control only one hero which was taken after completion of a short entry. As Ubisoft claims, the difference between the two characters, no — they are both descendants of the famous king Leonidas, and others treat them all the same. In other words, you won’t miss any content if you prefer one character to another.
The choice of protagonist is one of the many decisions to be taken on the progresses, because Odyssey has the opportunity to choose replica in the dialogues. Like in many RPG, you can finish the call by pressing the gold-painted phrase, and can continue to ask the interviewee about the details of the task or any event. And it’s not just the main story missions, but also small side orders (even hard to imagine the volume of the mentioned replicas). To discuss all and all certainly want to — we’re talking about Assassin’s Creed, where the number of historical figures per square meter is usually off the charts. Who would refuse from philosophical debates with Socrates or deprive themselves of the opportunity to get acquainted with the famous Comedy like Aristophanes?
Interestingly, the choice of some of the replicas are affected by what is happening in-game events. Some consequences are insignificant — for example, in one of the side missions I went in search of kidnapped by pirates, the poor guy, who eventually died in my hands. Back to the person who issued the assignment, I decided not to upset him and lied with three boxes, but would not inform him of the death of a comrade. But he immediately saw through me and after such a deception would not want me even to see — to take him on my team on the ship failed. But if he is to be honest with her, he would treat the protagonist with great respect.
Some decisions will lead to a complete failure, others will unlock extra side job. Sometimes make the choice difficult, then you have to decide which of three people to give the medicine, then offer to kill or pardon the unpleasant, but valuable person. Some effects are obvious immediately, while others will be revealed only after a few chapters, some of them even will affect which of the nine endings you will see. Of course, the system needs to be further elaborated — romance novels, for example, seem to be screwed “for show”: if you want to sleep with everyone, but to win the hearts of possible sentences. But the rest of the dialog component is failed, largely due to the excellent acting work, meticulously recreated the era and correct localization. The storyline in “the Odyssey” and presents so many surprises (and certainly will appeal to those who were dissatisfied with the revenge story in Origins), and with the active participation of the player becomes even more exciting.
The story is told not just one — three of them. First, a key dedicated to the search for the protagonist of his family, and unexpected twists, there is enough to keep the game interesting until the very end. In the third Chapter you will learn about the existence of the cult of the Cosmos and open the hunt for its members. Cultists are carefully hidden, but the approximate location of the tips of their habitat is almost always known, we only need to explore the map. After defeating the members of a particular group, you get to one of the eight most powerful leaders, and after the death of each of them is know who is behind it and calls himself a Ghost of Space. Finally, towards the finale opens with the third storyline is about the First Civilization — it also offers a lot of quests and other content.
The result is Odyssey becomes even larger and more vast than its predecessor, and there’s nothing wrong — you can spend a hundred hours and not get bored. Player fill orders, and execute them (with rare exceptions) fascinating thanks to the possibility to make decisions and different ways to solve problems. And if some of the task and represent the collection of stones or flowers or the usual running around from one character to another, often this routine is accompanied by some interesting history. Quest of the thief will end a long conversation with Socrates, which will draw conclusions about your person after answering his questions, and the mission with the girl, preparing gifts for their friends, be put before a difficult choice due to an unexpected finale.
Side quests are now much richer, as some of them could become part of the main story campaign. Of course, this is not true for all extra missions — some will just have to clear out outposts and rescue the prisoners or to burn supplies, but even these jobs are often encouraging great written dialogue and original situations. And due to the fact that the quests conveniently sorted in the corresponding menu, very dull instructions can be simply ignored. There are multi-stage “effects”, like the one that is associated with the daughters of Artemis, — you get this quest very early, but to complete it will be possible only after a couple dozen hours, because you have to defeat seven legendary creatures in different parts of Ancient Greece.
With quests associated unusual innovation available only in the mode of “research.” In this location the following objectives in a particular job is often not shown on the map — you only give clues at to look for all by yourself. These tips are always three: first, call the whole region, then the district and the third row shows the landmark or something like that. For example, you need to look at Volcanic Islands, going to the island of tyre and examining Minoan ruins, — all clear and no questions. If the region you have visited, search will be much easier, and if in that location are all covered with “marks”, the situation is a little more complicated. When you are near the right place, you can call eagle, which will quickly find the target. But nothing prevents you to continue learning independently if such simplification does not like you.
Often the tasks are issued new equipment, and in this respect the Odyssey even closer stepped in the direction of a full-fledged RPG than Origins. If there we chose only the costumes and weapons, then there is a need to wear hats, mittens, bibs, belts and shoes. They are so numerous that it is sometimes difficult to decide what design you like the most. Hats, for example, are Spartan, Mycenaean, Persian — a lot of options, there are even hoods for those who are used to seeing assassins in them. Gloves can completely close the hand, but there are Bracers that cover them only to the elbow, and a simple bandage.
All legendary gear promises bonuses for collecting a whole set. If you find a set of the Athenian hero, fired from bows arrows start to penetrate the enemy’s shields, and pirate attire you will receive an impressive bonus damage from abilities killers. Characteristics of the increase and regardless of these sets, they have worn each item, and with the help of engraving can achieve at the blacksmith for more improving characteristics. If some thing you like, but the level of it is low, you can always pay in-game currency to improve its quality and not to leave her ever.
The same is true for weapons — melee offers a huge assortment of swords, daggers, maces, axes, staves and spears. Some increase damage from certain abilities, others allow more to hurt the Athenian soldiers, and others make you much more dangerous in battles with animals. Legendary weapons also gives useful bonuses in one of the bows, for example, an ordinary arrows are replaced with poisoned. The only related problem is that all the legendary things I’m afraid to destroy and eventually collect in the inventory mount objects that belong to different sets or give different bonuses. Some kind of locker on the ship clearly would not have prevented.
Speaking of ships — the Odyssey returned to full-scale naval battle, and now participate not only in a couple of story missions. The ship, which is issued almost at the very beginning, allowed to improve in every way: to strengthen the body, increase stamina rowers and ramming damage, set the braziers to use burning arrows. But conventional pumping is not limited — we also need to hire special team members that join in the story or after you complete some side quests. In General, to become your companion can be anyone, even ordinary soldiers at the gates of the fortress — just enough to stun him, not kill him. But the benefits of this faggot will be a little — the armor of the ship and fire power considerably will raise only the strongest associates.
Well, if we hire you did not intend to, and just kill everyone, with each new level, the combat system will offer increasingly sophisticated capabilities. Almost immediately unlock the Spartan kick, with which I never parted during the whole passage, is to clean up located on the heights of the outposts “magic pendel” fun! These abilities are activated by holding down the L1 button on the controller (the L2 for special abilities with a bow) — and then stun all enemies around, and the addition of poisonous or fiery effect weapons, and the attack of divine fury with the increase of damage from all attacks. Thanks to these tricks and the fight became much more dynamic than in Origins.
So it is possible to characterize the Odyssey as a whole: all Origins embedded in the ideas received further development. Side quests become more varied, the plot was richer, additional role-playing elements seem unnecessary, but naval battles and the opportunity to improve the ship will appeal to the bored in Black Flag. And very good that after “Odyssey” series will once again go on hiatus, it will take weeks of paid and free content they promise very much, a colorful world of Ancient Greece impressive with each new hill.
