The final part of the restart of Tomb Raider came out as casually, as if publisher Square Enix wanted to get rid of the series and allow the authors to come to grips with the project based on “the Avengers”. The game was appropriate — despite the change of Studio, the developer (instead of Crystal Dynamics for the finale of the trilogy is mainly responsible Eidos Montreal) and the new writer, in the concluding part of the story, Lara is revealed is not the full potential, but missed opportunities — a great many.
The storyline is intriguing at first and even exciting. Lara is still trying to prevent the organization the “Trinity” responsible for the death of her father, to get valuable artifacts and change the world. Because of her desire to get ahead of the “competition” starts the end of the world caused by the disappearance of the ancient Mayan dagger, which is Lara, not for a moment hesitate, takes. After a few minutes Lara and Jonah talking to each other quietly, and the plot goes in the wrong direction which a player wants. Instead of finally turn Lara into possessed a selfish or at least some other way to develop character — in short, to act decisively and firmly, the authors of Shadow of the Tomb Raider choose the most safe path. So our heroine remains faceless girl, traveling to different countries. Eidos Montreal practically tries to explore her inner world, does not want to show weaknesses and strengths in an interesting light. Something similar occurs only closer to the finale, but it’s not enough to consider the game an important part of a trilogy about the development of tomb raider.
Lara travels to the lost Inca city of Paytiti and met with local residents, listens carefully to each and helps them to solve some problems. It is nice communicating with children, performs wacky side order, half of which consists of running around from one extra to another, petting llamas, studying the language — where’s the selfishness and the pursuit of their own goals, which the adventurer showed just a few hours ago? All this is reminiscent of the final season of The Walking Dead from Telltale, where it seems to be a powerful ending, but instead the crescendo again we fall into the camp with a dozen strangers. here, there is nothing special, but because the history of quickly losing interest.
Quiet, no noise
But in terms of gameplay, the game has changed a bit. The last part of the series was accused of too many shootings — say, a fragile girl during the battle is reminiscent of Rambo, and in the cutscenes not look like a serial killer. Here much more emphasis is placed on the secretive passage. Lara can get dirty in the mud and literally merge with the wall, climb on the branch and rope to catch passing in the bottom of the guard. In most cases around enough greens to dive into it when it detects, and the materials for making arrows lying at every turn. It is a pity that some options open too late, such as the ability to turn enemies against each other, and skirmishes with people very little.

The shooting has faded into the background, but to the study of tombs and mysterious caves players will spend a lot of time. Compared to the two previous parts of this item worked out much better — interesting puzzles will force you to use all the available Arsenal of features. Cling to ledges, climb through fragile walls, jump from platform to platform — if in the main campaign such episodes rarely cause problems, during the study, the secondary content will have to sweat. The third part is guaranteed to appeal to those who like Tomb Raider primarily for the study of heritage of ancient civilizations, not running around with a gun at the ready.
One of the most interesting features of Shadow of the Tomb Raider has become a flexible control of difficulty — you can make the entire game easy or difficult, and it is possible separately to adjust the difficulty of puzzles or shootings. Puzzles, for example, on the easiest level decisions will be, literally highlighted, and Lara will say, what is the next step you have to make. On average it only gives hints, and at maximum will have to all walk on their own. There are options for those who do not want to see white painted ledges and platforms — all of a sudden you think that real adventurers such hints are needed.
Another option connected with language settings — can be done so that the residents Paytiti to speak their dialect. It seems to promote immersion in the atmosphere, but only destroys it, because Lara always responds in English. Looks and sounds like this dialogue was terribly ridiculous — it is commendable that the developers added this capability, but to realize its cost in the “bilaterally”.
I would also like to see more meaning in the notes, monoliths and artifacts, which Lara learns new languages. The player from this study neither cold nor hot — just after it reaches a certain level, you can go to a larger monoliths, press the button on the controller to collect the next collectable items. But if with this knowledge, Lara knew of residents who would give her minor tasks, or simply communicate on different topics! Alas, it is not.
But in its current form Shadow of the Tomb Raider is almost indistinguishable from their predecessors. It introduced some new mechanics, but almost everything else we have seen previously. The game is sometimes very beautiful, to explore tombs and solve the puzzles interesting, and Lara has become even more like the voice actress, Camilla Luddington. But the final part of the series, many expected something more. There was hope for a new team and a fresh perspective on the history and fate of the famous tomb raider, but it’s just a good adventure game. From a gameplay point of view it was almost the best in the series, but in terms of plot, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, to speak bluntly, no.
- studies have more time than shooting;
- a huge number of tombs with interesting puzzles;
- beautiful detailed locations;
- the ability to adjust the complexity of the individual components of the game.
- mediocre story is not good for the final Chapter of the trilogy;
- Lara as a character so plainly and has not received any development;
- some interesting possibilities to deal with enemies appear too late.
|Graphics||Sometimes luxurious, the views are breathtaking, but on a normal PS4 all the beauty, of course, was not disclosed. Separately want to mention the wonderful facial animations of Lara from game to game, it is just prettier.|
|Sound||When staging a scene not the best, position saves music. It will not be remembered and will not go to the collection of favorite soundtracks, but during the game sounds great.|
|Single game||If you were expecting a qualitative change in the plot, forget it. But the adventurers are lucky they will have a non-stop study of artifacts and ancient monoliths, lots of fun, puzzles and collectables.|
|Overall impression||In terms of plot, the game may disappoint the developers as if they know nothing about your character and about what to do with it. But the gameplay is better than ever — less shooting, more research of the tombs.|
