Review smartphone Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium: the cherry orchard
In Russia, the good old Japanese brands are valued as hardly appreciate somewhere else in the world: from the Soviet era equipment Sony (and Panasonic) has been considered something sacred, special, unavailable is desirable. Reputation continues to this day. In many ways, so Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium Limited Edition (the Pro version) and reached to us, unlike many other European countries. In the last sentence, by the way, was no joke – the full name of the smartphone on offer at the Sony Store, sounds like it.
By itself, the smartphone XZ2 Premium remains himself in any version. “Limited edition” means a special packaging and premium service Expert Service, and a subscription to an online photography course at school Xperia Ambassadors Photography Club. Yes, the school of mobile photography, we were not mistaken. “Pro” added to beauty – and, perhaps, to the name of the model was already quite grotesque.
It is logical that he XZ2 Premium is notable not so much a 4K display with support for HDR format or your huge glass building, closest to what we saw in the “regular” Xperia XZ2, how much quality photography as the photos and the video here applied to a circuit with two rear cameras with RGB and monochrome sensors, which allows the smartphone, among other things, to shoot with a sensitivity up to ISO 51200. Did Sony finally make a smartphone that surpasses competitors in quality of shooting (or at least comparable with them)? Perhaps conceal a big fat case a real work of engineering art?

Design, ergonomics and software
About the appearance of smartphones in the Xperia series and its evolution is what I wrote in the aforementioned review of the XZ2 – Premium moves along a well-trodden path, only “fatter, wider, heavier”.
The rear surface of mirror unit with camera centred (in this case it is a double block) as the fingerprint scanner, located dangerously close to him. In the end, you unlock regularly overshoot the sensor, a finger touching the bottom of the camera lens. It is constantly wiped clean, but the camera app you don’t recall (although other smartphones have already learned).
The difference Premium is evident, of course, the front panel. It is not stretched the full height of the display, and the traditional 16:9 format, with the visible frames on the sides and considerable padding on top and bottom. The timeliness of this decision, especially in times winning of cut-outs and retractable from the housing front cameras simply outrageous – but Sony insisted on the timeless design status XZ2 Premium and the “elite” of this approach, not taking into account the trends of fashion. Well, the Japanese in his own right, and someone this approach can really come to mind.
But in the case of the Xperia XZ Premium it is also important that you like big things. It is the largest and heaviest flagship for today: 158 × 80 × 11.9 mm and weighs 236 grams. For comparison: Samsung Galaxy Note9 with more capacious battery and screen for more than a half-inch larger, weighs 201 grams. In reviews it’s often said in such cases that “gadget pleasantly Taglit hand”, but Sony is already, perhaps, too much. Any serious problems in the use of Premium XZ2 don’t experience – due to the rounded edges of the back and hold it in your hand without any problems, and they rule the usual two-handed method. But to speak seriously about this convenience hard.
The build quality and materials used, of course, no questions asked – tempered glass (Gorilla Glass 5) with two sides, the metal around the perimeter, dust and moisture according to IP65 standards/68 (you can drown a smartphone to a depth of five feet for half an hour and not worry about his condition – though a warranty case is not considered, keep in mind). Mini-Jack no, but the slide for the SIM card and memory card are deprived of the pin lock can be removed, just lift out your finger. And Yes, as a result, the smartphone will reboot – Sony traditions are immutable.
Color variations Sony Xperia XZ2 there are two Premium – black as we have tested, and silver. Both look serious, noble and boring – however, in this price category expect some game and shouldn’t have. Still, it’s a “premium”.
Functional elements everything is standard for Xperia: in addition to the keys switching on and adjusting volume on the right side is also home to a separate camera shutter button – volume button this is not used. Despite having a huge empty space under the display, the navigation keys are made, as is customary in Android, virtual and located in its lower part. More to allocate in appearance XZ2 Premium nothing. Above the screen there are no extra sensors for example for face recognition. This option is present, like on most smartphones running Android 8.0 Oreo, but involves only the front camera and is highly reliable (and in this case speed can not boast). You should rely on the fingerprint scanner.
About its features I mentioned above. Moreover, in order to use it, you need to intercept quite slippery (still glass) smartphone in hand – is doubly non-optimal scanner. Alas, compared to “normal” XZ2 there’s nothing fixed: was developed at the same time they are clearly on the same principle. As for the scanner – it is a standard capacitive sensor for which data is required regularly to overwrite. Some record-breaking speed, he does not demonstrate, but to say that it works annoyingly long time, too.

By itself, the shell for Android 8.1 is the same as in XZ2, – major changes in the past with its release months were not. Signature austere style and a large number of very decent Sony brand of services is accompanied by a slightly outdated logic (with the obligatory application menu) and various recommendations for installing apps (this is dedicated to a separate screen in the application menu). Any specific decisions especially for model Premium Limited Edition (Pro) no – normal operating system for fans of the brand.
In November XZ2 Premium along with several other smartphones in the Xperia series, XZ will receive an upgrade to Android 9.0 Pie among the first – although not too high position of Sony Mobile in the rankings by sales of smartphones, the Google remain very good.
Display and sound
A 4K display on the “premium” Xperia first appeared three years ago (Z5 Premium) – but since no one followed the example of Sony, so this element does not seem so significant advantage of the Main flagship in the family of the Japanese company. Every year the display has added in tenths of an inch in the past year has grown support for HDR, but the essence has not changed. Now it’s 5.8-inch LCD screen with IPS-matrix, which always shows the picture in Full HD resolution, switching to 4K (3840 × 2160) when viewing the video in a variety of applications (including Youtube). The display format is 16:9. While everyone is fighting over every square millimeter of the front panel of the case, trying to take them all screen, Sony veins.
Unfortunately, Sony continues to ignore the screens organic light emitting diode, although without using them to achieve a breakthrough in display quality of images on mobile screens, alas, impossible.
The panel itself its characteristics are not very different from the one we saw last year. The measured brightness is 492 CD/m2, contrast ratio – 1311:1. The figures are even better than the XZ Premium, and in conjunction with the full “sandwich” the screen (with a polarizing layer, oleophobic coating, and so on) this means it is quite acceptable picture in any environment, including under the scorching sun. But it was acceptable, nothing more, really comfortable viewing in these conditions can not be called: the colors fade.
To display the declared support for standard HDR, which provides extended dynamic range images, but without specifying which. Most likely, we are talking about HDR10 – with lower requirements to the screen. But even here questions remain to achieve a peak brightness close to desired (1000 CD/m2) I did not succeed, and the color gamut in the default standard mode (with Triluminos-range) does not reach the 90 % standard DCI-P3. Probably when switching to 4K mode when viewing appropriate content that happens automatically tightened and the corresponding parameters, but to test it I have not been able to.
In the above-mentioned standard mode rendering screen Xperia XZ2 Premium shows good by the standards of the Xperia precision settings – Sony smartphones previously served as antitone in this regard. So progress is at least there. Average gamma of 2.15 is in the normal behavior of the curves, the temperature hovering around more or less 8, 000 (although the ideal recall is 6500 K), the average DeltaE deviation for the extended Color Checker palette (shades of gray + a wide variety of colour shades) is 5,10 (at the rate of 3 and the reference value of 2).
Interestingly, in the translation display in the professional mode in which the color space is narrowed to approximate to sRGB, the General nature of the color does not change, then the color space is slightly displaced relative to the norm, is gamma of 2.15, shades of little “get warm” (falling below 8 000 K, but not by much), and the average DeltaE deviation of the palette Color Checker is of 5.34, which is even worse than in standard mode. XZ2 Premium begins to display colors more honest, it makes sense to switch from the default no.
With sound Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium works perfectly – unless, of course, to put aside the lack of a mini Jack. Wireless headphones has everything you need – support for both standard aptX (aptX HD) and LDAC. There are various software disable sound enhancement, including a very effective (my favorite here – DSEE HX). Included is a USB Type-C at 3.5 mm, but the headphones themselves are not. Their absence in the box gadget price of 80 thousand rubles – some amazing moment. The more that the Sony is a very good plug-in model, mid-range, which may well have fit in a few even to the “premium” smartphone.
XZ2 applied in Premium stereo speakers (on either side of the screen) that give even a bit of a surprise (despite a very high device status) the volume and purity of sound. As in “normal” XZ2, a Dynamic Vibration System, which makes the phone vibrate to the beat of the sound playing on it at the moment. Fun and even somewhat pleasant thing that adds emotion from using the gadget.
