Design, ergonomics and software
I have the feeling that Xiaomi Pocophone F1 has decided to join fashion trends and deliberate simplification. See for yourself: in the smartphone combines the cut style of the iPhone X (and many imitators on Android), a fairly large frame around the display format 19:9 and a thick body with a back cover made of plastic.
For lovers of something a little different there, though, “armored” (as it is called by the manufacturer) version with a backrest made of carbon fiber. It does not Pocophone F1 unkillable – no standards sealed stated. Yes, and the front panel is made of a regular, though tempered, glass, not polymers, as for example in Moto Z Force. If you drop the “armored” carbon Pocophone, it would likely get old cobweb of cracks and the need to change the display.
Colors for Pocophone F1 has two – “black” and blue. Black we took the quotes for the simple reason that it is possible to detect just by looking at the pictures. This is the version we had for testing. It’s funny that even on the official Russian site Xiaomi Poco picture of a black F1 is called “version-grey”, but on the box however says “Grafite Black”. Such are the subtleties of Chinese.
But the coating on the back panel of the plastic, carbon — look much more practical in terms of preserving the appearance. If you like to use your smartphone without a case (like me, for example: gadgets with a six inch screens are large enough to increase their number by “clothes”), you can do it pretty quietly. Back Pocophone F1 will retain its pristine appearance for a very long time.
Case when this is complete – dark, silicone pretty bad adjacent to the housing. For the first time, it will fit perfectly, but it is better to replace with something better and more noble-looking. This advice, however, applies to all silicone cases, which today are placed in boxes with smartphones.
Dimensions Pocophone F1 is not much different from Xiaomi Mi 8 – it is thicker, of course (8.8 mm vs 7.6 mm), but the General feel of the dimensions are very similar. Noticeable frame around the screen does not prevent him to remain a representative of a new class of normal smartphone with a huge display. To call it a shovel is not desirable.
But this smartphone will not name – and prevent the already mentioned thick frame, and a boring color, and the single camera unit with the fingerprint scanner, markedly protruding above the case.
This single unit with the move raises questions — about the same, which was and is the Samsung Galaxy S8+. And, alas, they do not disappear in the course of using the gadget. Find recessed in the housing, the scanner is not difficult, but the finger and then sliding onto one of the lenses of the camera, and sometimes the optics get and does the first movement. So wipe the camera lens will often.
He is a classic fingerprint sensor, capacitive, triggered – at least to see “by eye” delay compared to the behavior of the best scanners I have did not work. Facial recognition in settings Pocophone F1 I find this Xiaomi smartphone even installed IR illumination, but again hid the feature to future updates. It’s been over a month since the release of the Mi 8 the international arena, and the problem is still not solved.

Family Pocophone Xiaomi decided to create a special version of MIUI. However, the special shell — sounds too loud, in reality, talking about cosmetic changes. Some of them are very nice: icons finally got rid of the ugly framework to the application menu you can sort by type or by color of the icons (really very comfortable), the number of labels that fit on one screen, plus the shell is now better adapted to work with “monopoly”. Part is not so obvious: for example, change notifications, and settings menu. Also “MIUI for POCO” must work faster than normal MIUI, but it does not feel the speed is quite normal, comparable to the one that we saw in the Mi 8 (same hardware platform). Stability – not a horse of the shell, hovering in a particular application during the testing I watched more than once.
About an improved adaptation of the sheath for a neck I already said, because it was tested with this smartphone, and with any more, so to prevent the same mistakes that MIUI for Mi 8, would be inexcusable. But with the hiding “bangs” using the fill status bar with black color the same problem – space is filled with more than you need. With pixel precision why it is not winged, and the result is somehow sloppy.
Display and sound
In Pocophone F1 is set quite ordinary LCD display with IPS-matrix diagonal of 6.18 inches and a resolution 2246 × 1080 pixels – we’re already starting to get used to these uneven numbers. Pixel density of 403 ppi, the viewing angles are normal. All as we are accustomed to: not on a flagship level (there are already almost everywhere OLED), but for this price quite.
But some angles will not be full – it is important to display well proved themselves in different lighting conditions and was well set up. From the first he is not a measurement of the brightness level is 419 CD/m2 . This is even lower than the OLED display, which is set in the “real” flagship Xiaomi – Mi 8. And for the LCD screen it means only one thing – in direct sunlight the picture fades, using a smartphone is not too comfortable.
Measured contrast – 1357:1. Combined with the highest brightness it gives the expected good black level.
The new version of the shell for the most part preserved the same settings. In particular, there is a screen adjustment color tone (from cool to warm) and setting “contrast”, which, in fact, is work with color coverage. You can provide manage the device itself depending on the situation (adaptive mode – an analogue True Tone) and to get the cool colors. Fans of the correct pictures recommended to set the preset “standard contrast” with which I tested the color reproduction of the display.
The average gamma value is 2,18 curves behave calmly. A bit surprising Pocophone F1 in terms of sound. First, on-site mini-Jack yeah, no dust and moisture protection, but many manufacturers don’t even try to pretend that the refusal of analog audio associated with an improvement in the tightness of the device.
