Topic “Optimal gaming PC” is a logical addition to the series of articles “Computer of the month”. Last year we studied the capabilities of systems costing 30-35 thousand rubles, which is part of the starter Assembly, and also compared the performance of computers for 60-65 thousand. The table lists current at the time of writing, the price taken in a computer store “regard” and rounded up to the nearest multiple of 500 rubles. Of course, during the “life cycle” of the material (fall 2018) the cost of certain goods may increase or decrease. Therefore, the table system is chosen with some margin on price. Unfortunately, already at the stage layout of the article, the ruble began its regular fall against the U.S. currency. The cost of software in the calculations was not considered, only the estimated components.

The systems use almost the best in their series 6-core model CPUs. In the Assembly used AMD chip Ryzen 5 2600X — with a detailed analysis of this processor you can discover in this article. In the computer installed Intel model Core i5-8600 — cooler in series Core i5 (Coffee Lake) may be the only version with an unlocked multiplier, namely the Core i5-8600K. Before the release of processors Ryzen second generation optimal build AMD model was used Ryzen 5 1600X, and before the advent of the family of chips Coffee Lake in the system Intel used a 4-core (but 8 threaded) Core i7-7700. As you can see, in terms of performance, CPU configuration Intel seriously progressed over the last year.

Those who are planning to overclock the AMD CPU, you can safely purchase the cheapest six-core Ryzen. Under certain conditions Ryzen 5 1600 (11 500 rubles) will reach a stable frequency 3.9 GHz — the performance of this chip will almost match the performance of the model Ryzen 5 2600X. I have already noted that the rule “if I overclock the CPU, it’ll take a younger chip in series with the desired number of cores” is true for all models: 3 Ryzen, Ryzen Ryzen 5 and 7.

At the same time to work Ryzen 5 2600X (and other chips Ryzen second generation) it is important to have in its Arsenal effective cooler. Unfortunately, optimal Assembly is not enough without the cooling tower. Chase ultra-efficient and the most expensive models, in my opinion, it is not necessary (but possible). For example, for a gaming PC would be enough for the caliber cooler Thermaltake Contact Silent 12 (1 500 roubles). The efficiency of this (the screenshot above) is sufficient to Ryzen 5 2600X in games was working at maximum frequency, changing in the range 4-4,2 GHz.

To conclude the topic of CPU cooling, I note that the Intel Core i5-8600 quality cooler can’t hurt, as six-core Coffee Lake is very difficult to cold call. This statement applies even to the youngest model, Core i5-8400.

Another option to save on CPU in the AMD build is to buy a 4-core processor Ryzen 5 1500X (11 000 rubles), but such a move makes no sense in light of virtually no difference in price between this model and the previously mentioned 6-core Ryzen 5 1600. The option of Ryzen 5 1400 (10 000) to be considered under the optimal build I strongly recommend it. He has a clock frequency of 300 MHz lower than Ryzen 5 1500X, and besides cut half the cache of the third level — he is only 8 MB. This article demonstrates that a bunch of “Ryzen 5 1400 + GeForce GTX 1070” looks, to put it mildly, not very.

If we are talking about purchasing a more efficient chip than Ryzen 5 2600X, then we have to only look in the direction of the 8-core model. At the time of writing, the difference between the cheapest model (7 Ryzen 1700, 16 500 rubles) and the most expensive (Ryzen 7 2700X, 23 500 rubles) was a decent 7 000, so the best way would be to buy the youngest of the CPU with its subsequent acceleration. The same Ryzen 7 1700 without any problems overclocking to 3.9 GHz. Without overclocking this chip in games inferior Ryzen 5 2600X — links to the tests I have already cited above.

With regard to Intel LGA1151-v2, instead of the Core i5-8600 we can purchase Junior 6-core model. If I load all six cores and you use MCE frequency of the Core i5-8600 guaranteed increases to 4.1 GHz, the model Core i5-8400 (13 500 rubles) and Core i5-8500 (14 500 rubles) are slower — the frequency of these CPUs, if you load all six cores is 3.8 and 3.9 GHz respectively.

The option to purchase a 4-core model Core i3-8350K (14 000) not at all interesting, as even the presence of the unlocked multiplier the CPU does not allow to consider the chip seriously — compared to the Core i5-8400 you get a slower solution in multi-threaded programs and games.

But to increase the performance of the computational part can only be in two ways. First, instead of the Core i5-8600 possible to take the version with unlocked multiplier Core i5-8600K (18 000). Note that these chips when you load all six cores working at a frequency of 4.1 GHz. So K-processor there is a sense to take only under acceleration — in the Assembly just by using a chipset Z370 Express.

Second, instead of the Core i5-8600 you can take a Core i7-8700 (22 500 rubles) — this model works at a higher frequency (4.3 GHz vs 4.1 GHz), it has 3 MB more cache in the third level (12 MB vs 9) and supports Hyper-Threading technology.

Yes, in the configuration of the Intel we could get a cheaper motherboard based on the chipsets B360 and H370 Express as Core i5-8600 proposed in the optimal Assembly does not have the unlocked multiplier. However, the system uses a set of high frequency RAM — we choose to the younger chipsets, we would have to take RAM standard DDR4-2666. And quite cheap to buy is simply impossible! Despite official support for even 6-core chip Core i7-8700K, the ceiling for H310-plat I still believe 6-core Core i5-8400. In the system I recommend to use AMD based motherboards chipsets B350/B450. They support and overclocking the CPU and high frequency RAM. To use the same card on the basis X370/X470-logic makes sense mainly in the case of arrays of AMD CrossFire or NVIDIA SLI according to the scheme x8+x8 PCI Express 3.0. Let me remind you that the Board AM4 platform based on the younger of the chipset supports only CrossFire, and only in mode x8+x4.

Traditionally, optimal build “the Computer of the month” uses a dual-channel memory kit DDR4-3200 16GB. Practice shows that so many “brain” is still enough for all modern games. Besides, as I said, the RAM modules running on the effective frequency 3000+ MHz, significantly increase the performance of the system — including in games. As for persistent storage devices, the system proposes the unbreakable Union of SSD+HDD. The organization of the disk subsystem in the PC topic are highly individual, and therefore constantly causes a lot of controversy. Besides the cost of the storage devices varies significantly. And still the best option, I believe the use of SSD with SATA interface volume 240-256 GB and hard disk to 1 TB. Classics, so to speak.

Captain Evidence suggests that the main element in any gaming PC is the video card. For a long time in the optimal PC build of the month used GeForce GTX 1070 — this graphics card is great for all modern games in Full HD resolution. At its maximum quality settings, of course. Option much cheaper and much slower — is to buy a GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB (from 21 000 to 27 500 rubles) or Radeon RX 580 8 GB (from 23 000 to 29 000). Options more expensive and more productive is the purchase of a GeForce GTX 1070 Ti (from 33 500 47 500 rubles) or GeForce GTX 1080 (from 39 000 to 49 000).

Unfortunately, the main competitor of GeForce GTX 1070 — Radeon RX Vega 56 — worth considerably more. The reference model can be taken for 42 500 rubles, the price of custom versions of “VEGA” changes range from 43 500 to 52 500 rubles.

As you know, September 30, in sale model GeForce GTX 1170 (actually it will be called GeForce RTX 2070), which, logically, will be faster GeForce GTX 1070. In the latest issue of “Computer of the month” I have already said that the new NVIDIA is available in the most optimistic scenario will be in October, and buy a video card at the manufacturer’s recommended price will, I believe, in November-December.
