Review Vivo NEX: the most interesting smartphone of the summer
Vivo, NEX is designed specifically in order to declare the Chinese company up as loud as possible. Let me remind you that Vivo, as well as another brand owned by the group BBK, Oppo, has long been at the top of the global sales of smartphones – but almost exclusively at the expense of the domestic market. The time has come to expand the geography. Most often, Chinese companies are trying to attract customers in a new market in the first place a very powerful quote: this is the secret of popularity of Xiaomi, Huawei. But in Vivo (yet) another tactic. And the NEX – the locomotive of progress.
This smartphone from 6.59-inch display (the same size he is today in this segment no) format 19:9-almost without frames, but without the infamous cut. As engineers do that? It’s simple: the front camera automatically leaves the body during the activation, it requires “presence.” No on the body and visible recesses for the scanner of prints – here he is right on the screen. Vivo, as the first company to introduce the smartphone with ultrasonic sensor, hidden in a “sandwich” of the screen (Vivo X20 Plus UD), fair playing this card and in your flagship.
There are two versions of the Vivo NEX: with the letters S and A. the First has received the most powerful mass platform Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 and 8 GB of RAM, and the same fingerprint scanner hidden on the screen. Design, ergonomics and software
Most NEX Vivo-like in appearance Xiaomi Mi MIX the first version – the one square, with the front camera in the bottom corner and absolutely no frame at the upper edge. Here, too, the frame at the lower edge is considerably greater than the upper, only, of course, the camera down there, and the smartphone is still much more elongated display there are now fashionable format 19:9.
The frame around the display is minimal – feature “frameless” smartphone doesn’t deserve, but it is close to the maximum. However, this does not help to become Vivo NEX compact – still hide 6.6 inch diagonal, without making the gadget foldable, impossible. The smartphone is quite fits in the pocket or in any bag, but still felt huge. With a strong desire to activate the traditional management mode with one hand, highlighting only a relatively small area of the screen under the Desk. But mostly it is assumed, of course, work both hands – away from this today is nowhere.
Dimensions Vivo NEX – 162 × 77 × 8 mm. In the first place is, of course, high smartphone with the thickness of it all right. He felt even more thin due to regular intake – the back is curved towards the center. It is made of glass, as, of course, and the front panel is easily soiled surface, they have all the time to wipe though such a catastrophe, as, for example, mirror Huawei P20 Pro, will not. Faces are made of metal with the obligatory plastic inserts. Vivo, NEX weighs almost 200 grams, which is not surprising — it’s a smartphone for lovers of big forms.
Overall, despite its technical irregularity, NEX Vivo looks quite usual – perhaps this is accurate, but ordinary smartphones don’t even have original design decisions. Especially color options, which we have inherited. Black is so boring. It gives the coating of the lower layer glass miniature incisions, it is simply not visible from afar. There are also red and blue NEX’s, but in Russia they are officially not.
In addition to the retractable camera and fingerprint scanner, located on the display, Vivo, NEX can boast of a few atypical for a modern Android smartphone for the high-level design elements: it’s about Jack, who miraculously saved (however, the official moisture protection for the unit not stated) and an extra hardware key on the left side – it is responsible for calling the Google Assistant.
Also, the engineers chose a strange place for the slot under a SIM card – it’s here on the bottom, near the microphone into which and strive to poke a special pin to open the corresponding lock. I want to believe that it is solid enough to withstand this operation.
Now a few words about the fingerprint scanner. Logically, Vivo, having a working ultrasonic sensor that it can place directly in the display, refused the way of unlocking using face recognition. The more that is necessary to insert a sensor or the front camera in the NEX absolutely nowhere. So the calculation only on the fingerprint method. Concerns about the stability of his work was, especially considering the experience of Honor 10, which is also installed ultrasonic sensor, even in a specific key, and not under the glass display. There he works not too fast. In Vivo NEX also no problem: the touch area is highlighted on the desktop — you can’t miss, and the touch is emphasized by the special graphics. The speed and accuracy at least no lower than similar indicators of standard capacitive sensor. The scanner is located in a fairly convenient location, not too low – it is dangerous to intercept the gadget in the hand is not necessary. Let this decision motivated solely by a concern about the image (the scanner to the rear panel at least less relevant), but it is working well.
NEX Vivo running under the operating system Android 8.1.0 Oreo with a proprietary shell Funtouch OS 4.0 Details I talked about it in the review of the smartphone Vivo 9, so absolutely I will not repeat. Advantages of shell: smooth operation, minimal number of errors, the normal energy efficiency. Here Funtouch, feels little inferior to pure Android, which is the best in terms of speed shells, which are now available on the market. Also worth mentioning about the function cloning the applications that is loved by many users of Xiaomi.

Disadvantages: the more the number of preinstalled apps, some of which seem quite unnecessary (like a corporate app store), while others are afraid of their names (i Theme, i Manager i Music – that is, with spaces). Not also fixed a small problem with translation and not too pleasing fonts. The latter, however, a matter of taste.
Display and sound
Since ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra we haven’t seen a smartphone with a screen larger diagonal. For net area, of course, Vivo, NEX display is noticeably smaller due to the size of 19.3:9. But still is impressive: maybe it’s not to late “honest” 6.59 inches, but no more in any case doesn’t offer. All the competitors stood by 6.2 who is who by 6.3 inches.
Resolution AMOLED-matrix is 2316 × 1080 pixels for a diagonal it is not so much. The pixel density is not up to mark gentleman 400 ppi, stopping at 388 dots per inch. In principle, nothing terrible – the pixelation looks very difficult. It is possible, but you need a very strong desire — and examine the screen closely NEX Vivo. In normal use, the picture looks good.
OLED-matrix quality – even at extreme angles the colors are not distorted, but the contrast with the angle of screens with organic LEDs does not fall in principle. The display is equipped with a touch screen that responds to 10 simultaneous touches, all the basic multitouch gestures are supported. There is a polarizing layer.
The maximum measured brightness is 470 CD/m2. For AMOLED display which is very high, it is easy to notice in the above comparison table. Similar brightness can not boast of any one of the competitors. Freely use the NEX Vivo with no apparent damage to it including a Sunny day on the street.
Itself is the AMOLED display, but still as bright – this is great, but you also need not to mess with the settings. Some manufacturers allow the user to adjust the color yourself under – someone like it hot, others prefer the cold beauty. This is not the case Vivo NEX – here optionally configure anything. Allowed except to activate the filter, a blue color to protect the eyes, change the style and font size and to give brightness control to the mercy of the smartphone with its sensor external lighting (I couldn’t find it on the case, but it’s definitely there). The rest is simply to take the factory settings as a given.
Average gamma of 2.20 is for a sufficiently large variation in the curves. Color temperature ranges from 700 K To 6 7 To 800 with a median of about 7 600 K. It’s rather good level color a little chilly, but not extreme, as it often happens. Gamut close to the standard DCI-P3, but a jeweler’s accuracy, the smartphone is no different – the average deviation of DeltaE scale Color Checker is of 5.57. It’s decent, but not expressive figure for a modern smartphone. In General, the setting display can be called good – with its own characteristics, but certainly not disappointing.
With sound again (like in V9) Vivo did a good job. Here is a special chip, including the DAC Asahi Kasei AK4376A, and three operational amplifier. In the company mini-Jack (and not having to rely on adapters or quality of wireless audio transmission) this allows you to expect very high sound quality: the volume large, and basses available, and good detail. Vivo, NEX will not disappoint even with a very decent headphone.
The main speaker is located on the bottom – it sounds loud, more to say about him nothing. Conversational dynamics as such – uses a technology called bone conduction: we are familiar with it and Google Glass and Xiaomi Mi first MIX. Interlocutor can hear well, and moreover, in a noisy environment even better than using conventional speakers – but the sound still lacks a bit, some moments, “to swallow”.
