Review ultrabook Dell XPS 13 (2018): even faster, even more compact
Brand new Dell XPS 13 is the third in a row ultrabook, visited the lab 3DNews this year. Previously I tested the 13.3-inch model of the HP Spectre 13 and 14 inch laptop Acer Swift 5. All three mobile PC uses the same processor — 4-nuclear Core i7-8550U generation Kaby Lake Refresh. However, as practice shows, the use of the same low-voltage chip does not guarantee that ultrabooks will have the same performance. See it on the model of Dell XPS 13.

In the sale you will find many versions of Dell XPS 13. Characteristics of all the possible modifications indicated in the table below. In the editorial office was visited by the most advanced of those models that you can find for sale in Moscow, — the XPS 13 9360-0025. It is equipped with a 4K screen, CPU Core i7-8500U 16 GB of DDR3 RAM and SSD at 512 Gbytes. This version is the average cost 115 000 is a lot, but the prices I propose to speculate at the end of the article. At the same time for 80 000 rubles, you can take the model 9360-5549, which uses Full HD display, Core i5-8250U, 8 GB RAM and SSD of 256 GB.
Included with the laptop is the tiny power supply 45 W and a weight of just 100 g. it Turns out, BP can always take it with you — it is almost not heavier bag or backpack. And together with the XPS 13 is a useful adapter Type-C to the more familiar USB connector Type-A. Without that accessory in 2018 can not do nothing.
Appearance and input device
The silver version looks strictly and personally I like it more than the pink model. But collected all the XPS 13 in any case, from the same materials. Lid and base made of brushed aluminium. The manufacturer emphasizes that these elements of the case “produced on a milling CNC machine” — apparently, potential buyers with low knowledge of materiel have to admire this feature of the device. The area around the keyboard is made of carbon fiber, called, as usual, carbon. It is further covered with a layer of Soft-touch plastic.
The combination of these materials made it possible to make the device very light — ultrabook weighs only 1.2 kg and this parameter is slightly inferior to the previously tested HP Spectre 13 (1.1 kg) and Acer Swift 5 (1 kg).
The thickness of an ultrabook varies from 7.8 to 11.6 mm. the Parameter is far from the record — the XPS 13 is the “whole” is 1.2 mm thicker than the HP Spectre 13, but we understand that this whole pursuit is now in tenths of millimeters has no practical meaning. The XPS 13 is thin, lightweight and highly portable ultrabook. By the way, the thickness of its predecessor was 15 mm.
Impressive and other dimensions of the laptop — with a width of 302 mm and the length is 199 mm this model soon coming to an 11-inch laptop than 13.3 inch. Compare: the dimensions of the HP Spectre 13 be 325 × 229 × 10.4 mm, and Acer Swift 5 — 329 × 228 × 14,9 mm. All because of the so-called edge-to-edge screen design. The frame around the display really is (the thickness of the top and sides — 4 mm), but they are really very small.
Laptop lid reveals about 135 degrees. To hinges, no complaints — they accurately positioning the screen and do not let it hang out while typing. At the same time to open the lid with one hand you will not succeed.
The laptop is thin, therefore, among the interfaces there are only two Thunderbolt3 port, one USB 3.1 Type-C second generation 3.5 mm mini-Jack for connecting a headset and a reader for memory cards of format microSD. All interfaces are located on the left and right sides of the laptop. One of the Thunderbolt ports 3 is intended for connection of the power supply. In this case both connectors are working with a bandwidth of 40 GB/s and supports PowerShare allows you to charge connected to the connector of the external device even when the notebook is in sleep mode, as long as the battery is discharged to a given percentage of full capacity. The user can set in the BIOS the value for the USB PowerShare: 0, 3, 10, 25, 50 or 75 %. Of course, Thunderbolt 3 is compatible with USB C-type. USB 3.1 Type-C can operate as a DisplayPort video output and also supports PowerShare.
On the left side of the XPS 13 is also a battery indicator.
Front and back jacks no no — there is only enough large and noticeable activity indicator work ultrabook. On the bottom there is a small grating, through which the cooling fan takes the air and then throws him out through the perforations in the rear wall.
In the review of the HP Spectre 13, I noted that this ultrabook is a very comfortable keyboard, but the main input device of the hero of today’s review had a long time to get used to — mainly due to the fact that the XPS 13 is the Enter button was very small. I’m tired, I miss that key! Uncomfortable ultrabook and arrows. However, after a couple of days fingers began to find all the most frequently used buttons. So after some time getting used to the ultrabook Dell is quite suitable for typing large texts.
Keyboard XPS 13 is equipped with two-level backlight is of white color. The power button is integrated fingerprint scanner. Of the features also note that a number of F1-F12 by default works in combination with the Fn button, while the priority is given to their multimedia functions.
The touch panel I have no complaints arose. It’s not as big as the 15-inch models, but expect another at least naive (unless, of course, we’re not talking about Apple). The touchpad surface is pleasant to the touch — she also has a Soft-touch cover. Overall the touchpad normally the gestures, the click is accompanied by a distinct and fairly loud click. In the work the touchpad behaves quite adequately — checked in the computer card game “Quint”.
As for the webcam, the XPS 13 and other ultrabooks, the standard matrix with a resolution of 720p and a frequency of 30 Hz, with all its consequences. Good quality picture is really to only in bright Sunny weather. In all other cases, the picture is unattractive and very noisy.
The internal structure and capabilities upgrade
The laptop is easy enough versed, however, in the design of the device uses screws with a screwdriver type Torx (people — asterisk). After removing 8 screws you need to gently remove the bottom.
Cooling system the XPS 13 consists of two copper teplorulon and two tangential fans type. At least in appearance, this cooler looks a lot better than, for example, the system 5 Acer Swift. Therefore, we have come to expect from Dell laptop efficient cooling of the Core i7-8550U.
RAM in the XPS 13 upgrade cannot be all chips DDR3-2133 soldered directly to the motherboard. Take this into account when choosing a model. I think that 8 GB of RAM in 2018 look untenable. Especially if you plan to use the device not only as a typewriter. The memory runs at an effective frequency of 2133 MHz with latency 16-20-20-45.
And yet to disassemble the XPS 13 to further upgrade makes sense. In the test laptop is installed a solid state drive TOSHIBA KXG50ZNV512G of 512 GB. And if you ever cease to miss 512GB for their needs, then you will be able to install another drive form factor 2280 in the XPS 13. For example, the top configuration HP Spectre 13 enables the SSD to 1 TB.
