Overview of smartphone Xiaomi Redmi Note 5: the new king of the “public sector”?

If the “plus” takes its almost exclusively with price, Note 5 Pro can offer relevant and powerful platform, LPDDR4X RAM and dual camera and improved frontalka. Same soup, only much richness.
Today, we’re not talking about the “Pro” (sorry for the triple tautology), but about “normal” Redmi Note 5. Hell break a leg in the intricacies of these smartphones Xiaomi, but the key difference between them is, in fact, one more simple frontalka the hero of today’s review: 13 megapixels instead of 20 megapixels Pro. In any case, it is much better than 5-megapixel module Redmi 5 Plus. The rest – almost the same design and lot of internal improvements, of which I said above. And that is very important – the official sales. Not too merciful price in comparison with the original Chinese, but here you still have a choice. Anyway, the smartphone comes from official representation of Xiaomi. Differences from “official” Redmi “gray” almost there — I already wrote about this in the review 5 Plus.

Design, ergonomics and software
In the characteristic table you can see a minimal difference in size between the Redmi and Redmi Note 5 5 Plus. There is every reason to assume that these fractions of a millimetre are talking more about the accuracy of marking on the Russian site of Xiaomi (which was taken from a dimensions Note) and international (were taken from dimensions Plus). In fact, the shell of these smartphones are almost identical – the only difference in the blocks camera: both primary (where Note dual system) and front (it is simply a lens located on the other side of the earpiece).
The rest of the design is no different: a metal back and plastic face, due to which the smartphone is delivered from small stevacek for the correct operation of antennas, the classic spade-like form. And of course, the display format 18:9, which coexist rather large frame. The neckline in the manner of the iPhone X (and now dozens of other devices) have not yet come into the world Xiaomi – Mi 8 expect (spoiler: there he is).
The smartphone is available in four colors: gold, rose gold, blue and black (as in our case). If you want to buy official Russian Redmi Note 5, exclude from the list of pink gold and blue.
Externally Redmi Note 5 rather practical than beautiful, but, in addition to the very specific Mi MIX, to remember the Xiaomi smartphones, which are really trying to attract with its design, but not a combination of practical qualities, I don’t. Love them , certainly not for a pretty face.
The dimensions of the Redmi Note a 5 of 158.6 × 75,4 × 8,05 mm, weight – 181 grams. Extra grams compared Plus can be attributed to the dual camera module. About the peculiarities of perception of this body I already wrote in the review “the plus”, here again – due to the rounded side panels and back he seems a little thinner than it actually is, but it’s a really big device, its six inch display is not much he hides. In normal pockets it fits, and use them more or less familiar, but the same Vivo V9 in the case of smaller size manages to fit a screen larger diagonal. Another thing is that format and there more elongated, and the neck in place, so the advantage is relatively conventional. Just in this case be prepared to communicate with a six inch gadget with one hand to control it, most likely, will not work.
I note minimal soiled rear panel – brushed metal remain some traces of like a fingerprint, and scratch it, but to compare it with the now fashionable mirror glass, even a bit awkward. Angry and practical solution.
Traditional layout: two keys — turn on and adjust the volume on the right edge, the microUSB port, audio Jack and speaker on the bottom, and the top is only an additional microphone and infrared sensor. The sensor responds accurately and quickly, Xiaomi has learned how to properly work with him. It can be used to unlock the device or hide the “personal.” No payments via Google Pay – the NFC again bypasses Redmi party. This is, frankly, very frustrating and sad.
There is a facial recognition system on a smartphone Xiaomi we encounter it for the first time. Count on complete security of such a method is not necessary, and this prevents the manufacturer, but the recognition quickly and correctly, serious complaints I have had.

Works Redmi Note 5 running Android Oreo 8.1 with a shell MIUI 9.1. About it I was told in the review “plus”, to describe the details will not. Again, she is a very good set of features and additional software, but is far from ideal for stability – in spite of really powerful hardware, to treat very high speed and even more stability Redmi Note 5 I couldn’t. A week and a half of testing we had no time to restart individual applications, and once the smartphone has demanded a full reboot. What will happen after a year of use – not that it is terrible to think, but to be patient and suffer a little the smartphone user will have. However, for fans of Xiaomi’s business as usual.
Display and sound
In Redmi Note 5 is equipped with a six-inch (to be exact – with a diagonal of 5.99-inch) LCD screen with IPS-matrix and Full HD resolution with the amendment to the long format (2160 × 1080 pixels). The pixel density is 403 ppi.
Judging by all characteristics, and the behavior of the display – it’s the same matrix and even in General is the same sandwich as in Redmi 5 Plus. No point to look good from the good from Xiaomi was not: there is a normal protective layer, not too sensitive to a macrocarpon, and excellent oleophobic coating, and a sensory layer that responds to 10 simultaneous touches. Combined with decent viewing angles, we get the display to which at a basic level is difficult to fault.
But the screen suddenly a little less bright than the “black”. The maximum measured brightness – 494 CD/m2. However, this in combination with a polarizing layer enough that the image remains readable even in direct sunlight. So as a disadvantage the lack of 30 candelas I can’t.
The contrast is about the same – 1638:1. The flashes are visible, but in dark scenes the display shows himself in General not bad compared to other LCD screens of smartphones, of course.
To assess the quality settings I decided to test the display of Redmi Note 5 in several modes. In addition to the default – with automatic adjustment of contrast and “natural” colors — I tested it also with a “standard” contrast, in which noticeably changed color, but the actual brightness and contrast are about on the same level
Average gamma at default settings is 2,18 at a very stable behavior of the curves is to wish for the best, frankly, impossible. But the color temperature is very high and varies from 8 000 to 10 000 K with a median of 9 000 To – expect very cold tones. Logically, and the average DeltaE deviation for the extended Color Checker palette (grayscale + wide array of color shades) of 6.33 is at the maximum allowable rate of 3. Color gamut very close to sRGB. Everything is almost good, but the color temperature is failed.
When switching to the “standard” contrast, color gamut curved, which would seem to lead to problems with color accuracy, but things are going opposite. Average gamma is 2.26 and is also slightly worse than with the default settings, but the temperature much warmer: 7 000-9 000 with a median of about 7 600 K. the Average deviation of DeltaE in the Color table of 3.72 Checker is already quite close to the norm.
The reference settings display the Redmi Note 5 I will not name, but on closer approach it was possible to achieve how fashionable and appealing to many cool colors, and relatively natural. Not bad for a “budget”.
Redmi Note Plus 5 demonstrates the average sound both through headphones and through a single mono speaker. The latter, incidentally, easy to block with your finger and when horizontal, and vertical grip.
But there is a bonus in the form of support standard with aptX besprovodnoy sound transmission via Bluetooth – you can count on quality sound in this mode.
