Review of the smartphone Honor 10: old tricks in a new way
10 Honor was traditionally announced twice – first in China, April 15, and then in London, may 15. I already wrote about my first impressions of this smartphone – now it’s time to talk more about it.
Conceptually the same as in previous years: Honor 10 is turned Huawei P20 with some differences. Previously, they were primarily in design and price. With the price situation, of course, has not changed – Huawei P20 worth more than 40 thousand rubles, while Honor 10 – 27 or 30 thousand, depending on the amount of memory. But the design is just extremely close, but there were noticeable differences in the characteristics of another fingerprint scanner, a slightly modified display, camera, mini-Jack, and the lack of moisture protection. The most interesting is not the differences between different smartphones Huawei (company policy is very simple and straightforward), and whether a new Honor to once again “make” all in the segment of smartphones market by price up to 30 thousand rubles.

Design, ergonomics and software
Few people today chasing originality in search of our own if we are talking about the design of smartphones. Reliability and proven solutions, especially if they already tested the Apple, much safer. Honor 10 became the next holder of the cutout in the upper part of the display is almost exactly the same as Huawei P20/P20 Pro. Except that instead of round grille speaker he oval.
And Huawei is not shy about his decisions – at the presentation of Honor 10 compared with the iPhone X, and the Chinese straight text said that our smartphone, they say, insert much prettier. Well, maybe so — to judge the beauty of these controversial decisions that serve the utilitarian goal of maximum extension of the display, very hard.
If you don’t fancy being torn panel display, it can be corrected in software – in the settings you can choose the fill status bar black. In this form, the cutout will blend in with the surroundings on-screen, which displays system information.
Chip older smartphones Huawei sample 2018 – not only mirrored back panel in need of a cover as the man in the air (otherwise the mobile is too slippery, and besides instantly zalamyvayutsya). The main feature of the design that the Huawei P20, Honor 10 unusual colors. In addition to black and gray-blue in this case, we received two gradient: Phantom Blue (violet-blue) and Green Phantom (purple-green). On the test, unfortunately, turned out to be relatively boring, but still beautiful Glacier Grey – despite the name of the color, it looks more blue than gray.
Display 5.84 inches (Yes, we are in 2018, is the new normal) Packed in case, just slightly surpassing in size the one we saw in Honor 9 with its 5.2-inch display. Yes, this is partly a trick, an elongated screen (format 19:9), and the area is not as larger than it seems when looking at the diagonal. But for the most part, such a breakthrough is achieved after all by reducing the limits. Here they are visible, but not much in the way to reach your finger to different parts of the display. One hand use 10 Honor I did not succeed — the comfort level is slightly lower than in the case of Honor 9. But fundamentally there is no difference.
And yet when you look at the size and weight of the smartphone notice, if not the feat of the engineers, then at least an achievement. Honor 10 weighs two grams less than 9 Honor, despite the fact that it is not only display more, but the battery with a larger capacity. How the developers managed to achieve this when using the same materials (glass front and back, metal with little plastic inserts on the sides) – an interesting mystery.
The layout of the case classic – on the left-hand edge of the slot for SIM cards on the right – the power key and the volume/shutter release. The bottom, besides the USB Type-C and dynamics (it is mono, not duplicated spoken), you can also find a mini Jack for headphones. To jump into the stormy waters of fashion with a head, ignoring all laws of common sense, Huawei still did not. No moisture protection – leave at least an analog headphone Jack.
Despite the all-out pursuit of the universal, and what percentage of the front panel takes the display, Huawei has firmly left her “Home” button with integrated fingerprint sensor. And in an unusual format – the scanner here ultrasonic and hidden under glass, feels like an ordinary touch key vibration as feedback, but it looks like a transitional stage between traditional scanners and hidden in the display.
This is not the first ultrasound scanner, we have already met in the most unexpected devices (like LeEco Le Pro 3) – and far from perfect, unfortunately. Responds to touch it through again, the error rate is very high – despite the fact that sensitivity to microtrauma to the skin it should in theory be lower than that of capacitive sensors. To use the scanner and wet, and soiled by finger — these things he ignored. Although a plus.
If you want, you can abandon this method of verification of the user in favor of facial recognition, but first used an unreliable method with only one front camera (to trick it, you can even photograph), and secondly how well the system worked in Huawei P20 Pro, so weak she works at Honor 10. Don’t know why, but, as with the fingerprint sensor, the percentage of positives is low. Approximately at the level of ASUS Zenfone 5.
You can use both face recognition and fingerprint scanner – just for different purposes. One, for example, to unlock the device, and the second to pay using Google pay or access to private space.
Honor 10: EMUI

Honor 10 running the Android operating system 8.1 Oreo shell EMUI 8.1 is No different from what we saw in Huawei P20 Pro, in terms of the overall logic of the work there. Except that I can say about subjectively a little slower working with some large number of errors – but to make far-reaching conclusions about the artificial “slowdown” Honor compared to a flagship smartphone, I do not undertake. Well, energy efficiency is quite different – there are already claims for any platform, it’s all about the LCD screen instead of OLED.
Another slight difference is a larger number of pre-installed apps on the start. For each country — their for certain applications from “Yandex” to the customer “savings.Online.”
Display and sound
In Honor of 10 is used almost the same display as in Huawei P20, – 0.04 inches larger diagonal, a few pixels higher resolution (2280 × 1080 pixels), several pixels greater pixel density (432 ppi vs 430). You can compare to infinity. The fact that Honor is also 10 LCD display with IPS-matrix, like that of its main competitors – OLED in low-cost smartphones today installs only Samsung, with the assumption about “cheap”, OnePlus.
The screen at the “tens” a little bit smaller than the Nokia 7 Plus or ASUS Zenfone 5, but the smartphone itself less to deal with it better. The screen behaves like a typical IPS – good viewing angles combined with mediocre contrast. In this case 1364:1. For this type of screens is a good level, but for comparison with the OLED not good.
10 Honor is not the first smartphone, which is already in the box is glued a protective film on the screen. But here it is not glued tightly and does not replace the oleophobic coating. The rush to immediately withdraw it is not worth it – the protective glass is there, but it’s soft, it scratched easily.
And remove the film you really want – the fact is that, despite the polarizing layer and no air layer, the screen not enough brightness to keep the quality level of the picture outside on a Sunny day. The maximum measured brightness – 485 CD/m2. Some competitors are even lower, but it is rather a reproach to them than the praise of Honor.
The auto adjustment color tone depending on the external lighting are not migrated to Honor 10 of the P20 Pro – have to settle for just manual settings, color temperature and saturation, as well as standard things like auto brightness mode and sight protection with dramatically reduced color temperature. However, this is a very nice set, nothing to complain about.
By default, the smartphone has a color mode to “vivid” with the expanded color profile (DCI-P3). Gamma relatively decent – 2,03, the color temperature varies with a median of 8500 K, and the average DeltaE deviation for the extended Color Checker palette (shades of gray + a wide variety of colour shades) is 6.83, which is very far from the norm. This mode is for those who appreciate naturalness, and greater saturation of colors and cool shades.
For those who prefer the regular colors, that is, those that meant content creators, it is “normal”. In this color gamut close to sRGB, gamma is about the same – average of 2.06 at a similar behavior of curves. But the color temperature is much closer to the standard of 6,500 K – the vibrations occur in the region of 7 000 K. the average deviation of Delta E according to the table Color Checker is 2.62 that already fit into normal (3,00). For a smartphone this is a wonderful performance: it is possible to recognize that the display of Honor 10 well set up already out of the box.
Due to the presence of mini-Jack a life of Honor 10 owner easier – no messing around with adapters or requirement in the use of wireless headphones. With the sound through the headphones, the smartphone is quite ordinary – a normal detail, barely noticeable emphasis on the low frequencies, a coherent scene. If you prefer to use a Bluetooth headset, “ten” also have something to make you happy: the required standards for the transfer of high-resolution audio (aptX, aptX HD) are supported.
External speaker here only one. But it is loud and good quality, and when a horizontal grip is not obstructed by the finger. Speaker is fine, too, as well as the microphone – to call with Honor 10 comfortable.
