Review Nokia 7 Plus: smartphone with no properties
Nokia continues its campaign for the return of its former popularity. Once a year at the MWC skidyvayte nostalgic almost-copies of famous phones of the past: after 3310 “revived” 8110. But if these things cause one aching feeling returning youth, and one – Spanish shame because of the inappropriateness of such in 2018 (and at frankly inflated price), then Android smartphones are very successfully sold without any discounts.
Thanks to the excellent contact with Google and participation in the program Android One Nokia got the opportunity to release “your Nexus”, with very different price tags – from “pure” Android and updates first phase. Nokia 7 Plus is no exception – a smartphone middle class (the price at the start of sales 27 990 rubles) with Android Oreo 8.1 on Board, with a minimum of additional software, a large (six-inch) display, dual rear camera and a pretty powerful hardware: Qualcomm Snapdragon 660, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB of flash. This is one of the most exciting smartphones that came “from the pen” of the revived Nokia, so we’ll talk more about it.

Design, ergonomics and software
Nokia chose a very cute way for the design of their smartphones. Instead of having to chase fashion, with its endless glass surfaces — as spectacular as the brand, the Finns made smartphones that look “grown-up”. Yes, Nokia faceplate 7 Plus is covered by the obligatory glass (2.5 D, of course), but the rear is covered with material, which the manufacturer calls a “ceramic” inserts made of aluminum, painted copper color. The same metal lined and faces. The very same “ceramics”, the feeling is not very different from soft-touch plastic, and his manners great, collects fingerprints, but I would not say that this somehow can be attributed to the shortcomings of the gadget.
Two color variations: black and white. They are performed the same way, and this is the case when you do not want to be persuaded to buy any smartphone other than black (how they got!) – he looks really, really nice.
In the end, the model is simple but attractive. About soiled body I said, and using the supplied silicone case cool spoils the impression. But in this case it is optional (unlike, for example, the situation with ASUS Zenfone 5 or Honor 9 and 10).
Despite the use of the display format 18:9 (the other will sink into Oblivion), Nokia failed to achieve even conditional “bezremontnoy” screen takes up 77.2% of the front surface of the device. Most of the “unused” space, however, set aside the upper and lower dies, while the side frame is quite small.
To use Nokia 7 Plus conveniently enough, the finger reaches the opposite edge of the screen, although fully one-handed control method to forget. But the size is still excessive: 158,4 × 75,6 × 9,55 mm. It is one of the largest and thickest of smartphones of its generation. Such monsters have become accustomed, of course – but I would not say that this habit is not harmful. Fully play the trump card of the extruded screen of the Nokia didn’t work – still left a “shovel”.
In ergonomic terms, this is also a classic: with a fingerprint sensor on the back panel, hardware control keys on the right side and built-in mini-Jack. The navigation bar runs along the bottom edge of the display and cool inscribed into the operating system as much as anything to praise different shell (and many of them are great), but “pure” Android is particularly good.
Moisture protection Nokia 7 Plus devoid – alas, such things get in recent years, only the flagship smartphones. The front panel is covered with tempered glass Gorilla Glass 3.
The fingerprint scanner located at the back – yet the era of ultrasonic sensors, which can be hidden on the screen did not come, so the other way, Nokia was not. To the touch it is no problem to confuse sensor with the camera lens impossible. The capacitive sensor is triggered very quickly, a kind of special sensitivity to damage of the fingers does not show. It can be used to unlock the device and verify payments in Google Pay – there is NFC.
Also the operating system (was) is built-in facial recognition. Such a strange phrasing for a reason – unlocking apparatus own face I set as primary by default when you first configure Nokia 7 Plus.
But later noticed that the device stopped trying for me to “know” — you can simply unlock it by sliding the blinds up, and the settings of Smart Lock is missing the appropriate item. Google removed the service until, until you modify it? Or is the initiative of Nokia? Mystery. Anyway, put a lock on the fingerprint sensor – no problem.

The rest of the operating system doesn’t hold any surprises – it’s Android 8.1 Oreo without any shell and c Nokia Care for a quick solution of different technical issues. The operating system runs very fast and stable – maybe speed Google Pixel 2 here and there, but with their rivals by price range (ASUS Zenfone 5, Honor 9, Xiaomi Mi6) Nokia 7 Plus will be overcome easily. By the way, as announced at the conference Google I/O, Nokia 7 Plus has become one of the few phones for which is available for public beta Android P.
Display and sound
Nokia 7 Plus set, perhaps the most popular screen for the smartphone of 2018 issue: LCD (IPS), six-inch, 18:9, resolution 2160 × 1080 pixels. Pixel density, on the one hand, it is not impressive 401 ppi, on the other — this is enough for the average user (without a magnifying glass and a sincere desire to find flaws) did not notice the pixelation.
Screen and equipped with polarized and oleophobic coatings – the latter, incidentally, was perfectly in order, to constantly clean the glass, there is no need. The touch cover responds to 10 simultaneous touches.
The above-mentioned polarizing layer helps to escape from the glare, but it is not enough to display Nokia 7 Plus remained fully readable in Sunny day. For this IPS-matrix does not have enough brightness. Limit measured level – 431 CD/m2. To see something on the LCD screen with a brightness in direct sunlight, it is necessary to look. Any built-in adaptive brightness, changing the brightness depending on the content of the pictures, there is a real maximum.
The contrast for the LCD screen of the smartphone is quite normal – 1206:1.
User adjustment of the color rendering Nokia 7 Plus (and therefore Android 8.1 Oreo by default) is not provided – we can only rely on the accuracy of the factory settings. And here Nokia, fortunately, does not fail. The average gamma of 2.33, a figure not quite reference, but not too far. Curves do not behave consistently, but in a wild dance not being hit.
The average color temperature is in the region of 7 500 To with a brief journey towards the standard of 6,500 K — the district average in brightness shades. The picture looks a little colder than the one that you can count on a perfectly tuned monitor, but here we have not a tool of the designer, and the mobile user device. For him – quite normal.
The average DeltaE deviation for the extended Color Checker palette (grayscale + wide array of color shades) was 3.94 with a standard 3 – again Nokia 7 Plus it is not ideal, but overall the screen is configured better than most competitors.
The absence of a stated dust – moisture protection there is a plus – 7 Plus Nokia is not deprived mini-Jack, which is why it is often sacrificed in favor of various IP standards. Here it is on the upper side and provides the opportunity to use wired headphones without any adapters. The sound quality in this embodiment, the connection is very good, 7 Plus quite confidently competes here with the ASUS Zenfone 5 (which is also all sound excellent). The power reserve is enough to not raise the volume level to the maximum even in the subway. For lovers of wireless headphones also have good news – the following protocols are supported aptX and aptX HD, so with Bluetooth headphones, you can count on high quality sound.
Built-in speaker monaural, located on the bottom right of the connector USB Type-C. If you hold the smartphone in landscape orientation of the screen, it does not overlap with your finger. Sounds too dignified – music to listen to I wouldn’t, but some videos with voice acting to watch – why not. The volume is enough to not worry about the possible pass calls in almost any environment.
For recording sound use of the microphone with the support of software enhancements Nokia Audio OZO. It is difficult to say whose merit, but the problems with the audibility on both “ends of the wire” did not arise.
