After the preview version, which I was able to meet early in the year, Frostpunk I was waiting for especially hot (forgive the pun). The result places even surpassed established a few months ago expectations. The game skillfully created an atmosphere and checks the strength of your moral character.
Not losing hope
If you read our preview, in General terms, imagine the world Frostpunk. According to the authors ‘ fantasy, by the end of the nineteenth century mankind was on the verge of an icy Apocalypse. The last hope for the survival of the city, which is built around the reactors installed in the icy craters. Huge car turns coal into heat, but require the amount of fuel that put them only in a resource-rich lands. The first expedition went North to found settlements near coal deposits. We arrive there a little later. Unfortunately, instead of populated cities, our group finds only abandoned all the thermal reactor. From this moment begins the history of the New London.
The game is unobtrusive dictates that you should start with resource extraction: coal to operate a generator and wood for construction. A small piece of land available for settlement and studded with minerals, created by hand, no random generation. And generate here is nothing special — a few sources of wood fuel for heating and steel. The choice of constructions that at first, too small: cool tents, collection centres, resources and workshops for learning new technologies.
Frostpunk — a surprisingly linear game. You need to hold out forty-five days in harsh conditions. Most of the events, such as a cold, premeditated. Waiting for you and more interesting situation, but let’s not spoil the surprise. Unexpected problems are forced to be constantly on the alert. Not enough to solve them here and now, it is extremely important to plan ahead: stock up resources in case of disruptions in production, turn off any source of potential discontent before it escalates into riots. It is the first passage when you don’t know what will present next day, the bright.
Manual elaboration of key events has allowed a great balance of difficulty. On the one hand, will not work at some point to postpone the office and enjoy a prosperous society. On the other — hopeless or unfair to the player situations no. You can always find a solution. Another thing is that it might well be unpopular among the people.
What matters is how you conduct social policy. Will I have to work hard, work extra shifts? How to care for the seriously ill? Whether to send children to the mines? Frostpunk makes regularly to deal with such issues. This is the diversity the game offers a variety of tools to solve problems. How and what to use is entirely your will. Let the events devised in advance, and the amount of resources calculated by the developers, depending on the policy you selected each passage will be felt in different ways.
It’s hard not just to survive but to survive and remain human. 11 bit studios, as in his previous work, again validates the strength of not so much your ability as moral quality. The higher difficulty settings, the harder it is to please everyone. You very deftly pushing for unpopular decisions. It would seem, nothing terrible to feed people soup, but not a full lunch. And shift would be nice to increase. We’ve got hard times, among other things, they require appropriate measures. Only here before you know it, time has already signed the decree on public punishment to the discontented diminished.
Mechanics Frostpunk is not depth, to be honest. Even the tech tree, which in the first hour dazzled, is not so confusing. The finale if you wish, you can explore absolutely everything, but you will, except that a half of scientific achievements. The downside of this is only for those who crave a hardcore urban simulation. I also in the simplicity and transparency Frostpunk see elegance.
Let SimCity or The Settlers more comprehensive, but no other game does not make you worry about your city and the population so how is it Frostpunk. Arrangement settlement and society it will test your leadership skills, and exploration of the icy plains pushes forward the overall story. By building the lighthouse, you will be able to send expedition to explore the countryside. The most active points on the global map will find something interesting: resources or another group of survivors. And again, you confront a moral choice. Will you accept yourself sick, that will have to take care of, or leave them to certain death? Three basic layer of gameplay (improvement — research solutions) carefully work the clutch and participatory atmosphere.
Unfortunately, to replay the main campaign, even on different difficulty levels and with other solutions is not so interesting — all the difficulties know. Therefore, we propose additional scenarios, one of which you want to keep warm the containers with the seeds of various plants, and the other try to adopt a lot of refugees, providing all the shelter and food. In the future the creators plan to add new maps and events, so do not rush to delete the game.
In the end, Frostpunk very pleasing to the eye. Fans of steampunk will surely be in all the workings and producing mines automaton, slowly and majestically stalking about among the buildings. The visual part is made with special attention. The picture is enlivened many things, from melting around a heat source of snow to cover the ice, as if covering the monitor from the back side with strong frosts. The icing on the cake — a beautiful melancholic soundtrack that accentuates the overall atmosphere.
* * *
In Frostpunk no battles as such. Your only enemy is nature. Not only the ice element, but the nature of man that will do anything to survive.
- simple, but fascinating and multi-layered mechanics of survival in icy conditions;
- the game constantly checks (and trying to shoot down!) your moral compass;
- the dense atmosphere of despair in the background of icy post-Apocalypse… with a bit of hope;
- wonderful audiovisual performance.
- the second time held the same scenario is already not so interesting;
- the construction of the settlements to some it may seem too simple.
|Graphics||Excellent visual design and lots of details that breathe life into this harsh steampunk world.|
|Sound||The soundtrack perfectly fits the melancholic atmosphere of the game. It is not depressing, but rather soothing.|
|Single game||Harmonious fusion of the construction of the settlement, survival simulator and interactive novels.|
|Overall impression||Fascinating, but very simple in terms of mechanics, town-planning simulator, which is proving to be a heavy moral test.|
