Review smartphone ASUS Zenfone 5 Lite: rapid cycle
iPhone X set the tone in the design of the smartphone is low on the year ahead – by doing a short breath, “the unibrow” has been adopted by a Legion of little-known Chinese (Leagoo, Ulephone and so on), Huawei (P20/P20 Plus) and ASUS with the “big” Zenfone 5. But the Lite version of which we now speak, was devoid of this element, demonstrating at the same time more individual and customary in the 2017 line: the inevitable today long display with an aspect ratio of 18:9, but with significant indentation on the top and bottom of the screen.
Both in appearance and in their characteristics Zenfone 5 Lite is most similar to “normal” Zenfone 4 moved to the rear panel is a fingerprint scanner, a modified arrangement is similar (but still different) cameras, but with the same platform, battery, volume of both operational and permanent storage and the glass back is beautiful in the photos and the brand in reality. Did the attempt for a second time to go to the same river?

Design, ergonomics and software
The ASUS Zenfone 5 Lite I have already said a little above. Yes, there has become suddenly trendy guide”monopoly”, but the body is almost entirely made of glass, metal made, only the faces. On the front panel glass is slightly curved (2.5 D), with a fairly good oleophobic coating on the back flat, but I have the feeling that it somehow just coatings that prevent to collect all the fingerprints deprived. The gadget is, unfortunately, easy zalamyvayutsya. Use it with a silicone case is a typical recommendation for all glass smartphones.
Available body colors, other than those presented here in the black (boring classic) – white and bright red. Both look very cool, albeit not likely to be very popular. Buyers prefer the modest color options – either something premium-kitsch, like gold and silver.
Put soiled body of the brackets, the Zenfone 5 Lite looks very good ASUS managed to strike a balance in the dimensions for a smartphone with a six-inch display. However, there are nuances. The gadget is quite thin (7.8 mm), but visually it seems thicker than it really is. In fact to use the smartphone this feature does not prevent, Zenfone 5 Lite is easy to handle as it can be a convenient device with such a screen diagonal.
Yes, with the advent of the use of the display format 18:9 diagonal six inches ceased to frighten, but to use with one hand I have still not obtained – even with my long fingers. The frame around the screen is noticeable, but the area below the display does not lead to any functional elements like a navigation bar here virtual and “eats off” the usable space. If desired, however, it is possible to hide, causing the screen only when needed – but do it extremely uncomfortable, brushing from the bottom of the screen. I inevitably touched the “vital” part of the application; in the end, I left the navigation icons on the screen on a regular basis.
Above the screen but full only: in addition to the speaker there are two lens of the front camera and flash, and status led and light sensor. Looking at such a wealth, I can quite understand why Lite was deprived “of monopoly,” to her it simply would not fit.
Other functional elements in their usual places: mini-Jack on top, microUSB port on the bottom (Yes, USB Type-C is here somehow is not reached), the slots for various cards on the left and the power key and volume controls on the right.
But the fingerprint scanner has settled on the back is its location under the screen in the button “Home” was only a brief episode in the history of ASUS Zenfone. New fashion trends and sometimes lead to the return of proven solutions. Well, in this case it’s for the best – I have repeatedly spoken about the fact that the use of the fingerprint sensor on the back, directly under the index finger, much more convenient – and now, spoke again.
The traditional fingerprint scanner, capacitive and demonstrates normal for a modern smartphone level. It can be used to unlock the device and answer incoming calls. While the skin is not damaged and the whole surface of the imprint corresponds to the fact that the device remembered – unlock is very fast.

But here at the Zenfone 5 Lite is another feature that dramatically came into fashion at the end of last year, the smartphone is able to recognize the owner not only prints, but also in the face. He does this not through a special sensor, and using the front camera and the system works, unfortunately, not very good. Even with perfect lighting, the smartphone recognizes a face through time, and in the darkness refuses to do so. The good old fingerprint scanner works much better and more reliable. Perhaps in future firmware, this time developers will be able to correct.
ASUS Zenfone 5 Lite comes with Android 7.1.1 Nougat. Covered with operating system a proprietary shell ZenUI fourth version, which got rid of the most part imposed by her predecessors applications would become visually pleasing and much easier. The sensations from the use of smartphones ASUS still noticeably stand out – in what direction, decide for yourself, but the transition will not be as radical, although you can get used to the different features (like the very specific keyboard) would be long.
Updated shell often, ASUS actively supports the functioning of the smartphone.
Display and sound
ASUS Zenfone 5 Lite includes a display diagonal of six inches – I think it will soon become the minimum allowable value for the mass of the smartphone, and the screen diagonal of 5.5 inches will be perceived as a little “how you can do something to see it?”
The display resolution is 2160 × 1080 pixels, density of pixels, respectively, of 424 ppi. This is enough not to cause problems with pixelation and not enough smooth-drawn fonts. Quad HD smartphone of this level even with a very large screen is not required – in fact, very high resolution is necessary only to work with VR systems, but Zenfone 5 Lite hardly such a scenario can be called the primary (and indeed probable). “Sandwich” the screen is devoid of surprises – there is a polarizing layer, and the absence of the air gap and the touch panel with support for 10 simultaneous touches. Mode of operation with gloves I need to activate it from the settings menu.
The maximum measured brightness is 413 CD/m2. Zenfone 5 Lite does not Shine in this respect – no polarizing layer does not help the LCD screen with similar brightness levels to be comfortable to use outdoors on a Sunny day. The screen does not fade – and thanks for that. To save battery you can enable automatic brightness, but the algorithm works very poorly – the picture is consistently too dark, forcing you to look. I in the end, the action is simply turned off, adjusting the brightness manually.
But a good level of contrast. To IPS-matrix, even a very good – 1292:1. If you lower brightness, the black depth even older, but the smartphone to display a decent level. A significant increase on the LCD screen is in fact impossible.
Average gamma of 2.03 – an indicator in itself unusual, but not very far from the norm. And curves, as you can see on the chart, behave relatively normal for the screen of the mobile device.
But color temperature, alas, is not tenable as a substantial part of the curve just didn’t get on the schedule, beyond the permissible limits of 11 000 K. on average, the level ranges from 9 500 to 10 500 K. This means that we will have to deal with too cold colors.
The average deviation of DeltaE scale Color Checker including a wide range of colors and shades of gray, made up 9.39. Zenfone 5 Lite here claims to be the record that put the Sony Xperia smartphones of yesteryear. However, no settings that allow you to adjust color in the menu. We can only accept and “enjoy” beyond the cold colors. Is it possible to activate the filter blue, shifting colors in the notoriously more warm colors, but it is worth doing is that before you sleep to give your eyes a rest; a natural rendering in this way is also not achieved. This in itself color gamut close to sRGB – the problem is the temperature settings.
Sounds Zenfone 5 Lite at the level of the predecessors – ASUS smartphones in this regard has always demonstrated normal levels: with the volume and compos mentis sound detail. Thanks to the fresh platform is Qualcomm support wireless transmission of high quality sound via Bluetooth. In place and a mini-Jack – no problems for reactionaries, nor for the adherents of the freedom from wires.
Built-in speaker monaural – loud, but don’t expect that I will be able to listen to Coltrane in the car so that everyone around gasped. But the call will be hear to worry about it not worth it. When viewing or playing with smartphone in a horizontal orientation by the finger of the speaker is not overlapped.
