The first Q. U. B. E. was a good game, but compared to Portal looked quite pale. They’re both first — person puzzle game, but if Valve’s puzzles were solved in stylish locations, to the accompaniment of great jokes, the draft Toxic Games were much more simple. The plot of Q. U. B. E. it’s easy to describe in one short sentence, memorable characters “not delivered”. Well, at least the puzzles entertaining come across. The creation of the sequel took more than five years, and during that time the Studio has tried to correct the main mistakes of the first part. But still not as good as I would like.
The new rules
Funny thing here is that the second part was more similar to Portal than the first. In the last game to paint Cuba, which is used to solve the puzzles, it was impossible: if a bricked-up wall red cube around which is full of white — so you can interact with them and the location or the colour does not change. In the sequel, the mechanics have changed a little — now in each room there are some white plates, and they can apply any of the available in the Arsenal colors. Freedom Q. U. B. E. 2 is not the same as when you create portals of different colors, as the plates here are always as much as is required to pass each level.
A palette of gloves of the main character modest. If you make the plate green, then the interaction will fall from it’s green CC, Applying a reddish tint, you can nominate from the same place quite long platform. Well, blue plate swing in the opposite direction all falling objects, as well as character. But the mystery built not only on coloring in the future, there are magnets rolling along the inclined beads, and devices, covering the figures with oil which is ignited by contact with fire. New mechanics are introduced gradually and thereby make a significant variety in the gameplay. But in the final chapters of innovation is not enough, so they seem to be prolonged.
The story, alas, does not Shine — though it’s obviously one of the most important components of the sequel. Unfortunately, he stop paying attention after a couple chapters. This time we manage the archaeologist Amelia Cross, trapped in a dilapidated, alien world. Girl with a pronounced Scottish accent, is actively communicating with the other survivors on the radio, and stumbles upon a talking statue, learn the secrets of this unusual place, talks about “living structures” and eventually discovers a terrible secret. The actress did a great job with their roles, but sometimes they are such nonsense and trivial, that you begin to regret the absence of the “Skip” button. The ending looks absurd, but it is possible that I got a “bad” ending, to view the second to take place from the beginning because the save is erased.
Like the best
Another disadvantage of Q. U. B. E. 2 is associated with the initial heads for the first two hours have to solve too primitive mysteries. Giving the player the opportunity to paint the plate yourself, the developers thus created many problems in the design of puzzles. The fact that in the first chapters when hit in the next room, the player immediately sees the solution, not even thinking about possible options. Many of the mysteries associated with the mechanics: on the top plate creates a green square, and on the bottom (which is often tilted at 45 degrees) — blue, from which the green will jump out. And the next time you see a slanted white plate, directly above which hangs another, then just press a few buttons and quickly leaving the room.
Therefore, the top of the head of an extremely simple and short. But later the puzzles become much more challenging — on some I sat for ten minutes. Somewhere use large buttons, which when activated starts moving platform and you’re trying to figure out if we should throw on the button the cube or stand up on her own. The other rooms have on-the-fly to switch the colors of the same plate — for example, instead of leaving the red platform to activate the blue trampoline, Bouncing to the bottom of the cube from him bounced. The game creators have prepared a lot of original puzzles, and especially interesting to have those associated with ignition of cubes — some doors open in case if they approach a burning object.
The passage of the plot will be more than four hours, the game about two times longer than the first part. Yes, and many of the elements it is made much better, therefore, to produce so-called “Director’s cut”, as with its predecessor, is not required. Initially, Q. U. B. E. has been completely devoid of any story — it was added only after two and a half years. The sequel immediately tried to make as more as possible quality: on Unreal Engine 4 drew a beautiful location with a convincing model of the lighting, the sound system, as mentioned above, also no complaints, and the story added once, even if it sometimes resembles ravings of a madman. The mystery is more complex due to the unpredictable physics, which should be noted (although sometimes it’s hard to say if primarychannel the cube to the desired button, if the magnet time to relax). But the test usually takes only a few seconds is not critical. By the way, the subtitles this time in the game, and the first reason they “sew” and could not.
But some shortcomings still remained intact. For example, the main character once again does not know how to run fast — it moves slowly from one room to another, it begins to irritate when walking down long corridors and staircases. Moving from one zone to another is carried out on the same elevators that looks strange against the background of attempts of developers to diversify locations and fill them with details like the bushes, pipes and crudely taped to the walls of the tile. Level design, as if the artists tried, seems dreary and monotonous. The same doors, similar to each other mechanisms — so that there is even some chapters built on one principle: got in a great location, solved the main puzzle, and then went to four or five adjoining rooms, to click the button and connect the power.
But for those who just want to play Q. U. B. E. 2 in order to solve puzzles, the game certainly will like. You will meet great riddle, after the decision which will certainly Pat yourself on the back and are surprised by the ingenuity of developers. However, sometimes there is a surplus of clues — location of the plates in some of the rooms speaks for itself, and it greatly simplifies the passage. And other mechanisms is also a concern — there is a problem with game mechanics and lack of unnecessary objects that could confuse the player. It’s hard to say whether this is the correct solution, but even with all the shortcomings of Q. U. B. E. 2 want to pass through. At least for clever puzzles, which at first glance seem unsolvable.
- a lot of interesting puzzles;
- gradual introduction of new mechanics and mechanisms;
- on location there is never any extra plates or objects with which you can interact.
- solve some puzzles too obvious;
- absurd plot;
- to see the second ending, you have to pass it all again.
|Graphics||Using the Unreal Engine 4 has greatly improved graphics, but some design decisions are puzzling.||7|
|Sound||Music is included only in strictly designated times and do not remember. But the actress voiced characters great.||7|
|Single game||The sequel was more prolonged than the first part. He constantly throws new mechanics, but in the end if exhaled.||7|
|Overall impression||Good puzzle game that occasionally suffers from its own game mechanics — well, not need the player to see the solution in a moment after he was given the task!||7|
