Review phablet ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra: colossus Taiwan
A little taxonomy to start with. To write a headline that you see before you, I had to step on the throat – there are few words that I like less than “phablet”. But for the surgical precision of the description is, unfortunately, necessary. This is it, the gadget is stuck at a distance of 0.2 inch from the tablet. But a smartphone at that, he just had to be stopped. Such as it is, there aren’t too many: someone offers to call phablets — or a little more than ironic, shades devices with displays, the diagonal of which more than 5.5 inches (ranging from the iPhone Plus series), but this has long been a normal, ordinary smartphones. However, there are phones with screens more than six inches – it is their offer and allocate a subclass of phablets.
Well, ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra can be considered a prominent representative of this class. He had a platform medium-high by today’s standards power Qualcomm Snapdragon 652, 3 or 4GB of RAM depending on the modification, 64/128 GB of flash memory. Its main distinguishing features, in addition to the gigantic display, – declared serious multimedia capabilities: technology True2Life+ needs to optimize the image, and stereo speakers with a variety of magnets, amplifier NXP Smart AMP and a proprietary software processing, SonicMaster 3.0 should help with the sound. Also here for the first time in the world applied technology surround sound DTS Headphone: X. that is, in fact, we are really dealing with the next of kin of tablets, which was conceived as a bedside gadgets for surfing the web, playing games and watching videos. See how in Zenfone 3 Ultra this person get along with the fact that it’s actually a phone too.

Appearance, ergonomics, software
In the appearance of Zenfone 3 Ultra is clearly visible continuity in relation to past “Zentrum”, which was not the Deluxe version or the regular Zenfone 3. It’s all about the volume button on the rear panel: the characteristic feature of ASUS smartphones on the spot, whereas on smaller devices this year, the place occupied by the elongated fingerprint scanner – although, admittedly, the form designers were able to observe.
Ultra also has a scanner, but he moved into the Home button, which is located under the display, is just the completely new for Zenfone element. Ultra dimensions allow such liberty. By the way, despite the fact that the device seems huge in all directions, he’s actually quite thin at 6.8 mm Made it a success — from a single piece of aluminium, with no plastic inserts: the manufacturer was able to ensure the normal operation of the antenna without dielectric inclusions. I’ll tell you: Yes, actually managed, of connection issues I didn’t notice.
There are three color options: silver (Glacier Silver), grey (Titanium Grey) and pink (Metallic Pink). They all look good, in addition, the metal body almost does not collect fingerprints, slap him hard.
The display is covered with glass Gorilla glass 4, but it’s the only part of the phone, to which applies the word “protected”. Dust and moisture not stated, so in the bathroom gadget is better not to drop, and washing is not necessary, and in the case of falling body, likely to collapse. And glass can still not withstand such treatment.
Overall, Zenfone 3 Ultra is a very nice and cool filled gadget, but conventional measurements to assess its design and ergonomics are not applicable. Any outstanding performance is lost due to its size, and talk about the possibility of one-hand control at all funny — it is not.
Okay to the corners of the display do not pull out, so the giants have their own problems – for example, to the key of the volume control to reach very uncomfortable, have to intercept the device or press it second hand while the first holds the apparatus by the edge. Still, it’s good that the developers did not put a fingerprint scanner – or unlock the device every time would be turned into a real adventure.
The power button is also reasonably put to the right side. Here are the slots for SIM-cards (one nano, the other micro). The one for nano-SIM, combined, as is usually the case, with a connector for a memory card.
Fingerprint scanner are normal, capacitive – so it shows the standard for a modern smartphone, the success rate of recognition. While the skin is not damaged and the whole surface of the imprint corresponds to the fact that the device remember, the unlock is instant. Even the button to press is not necessary: just use my finger and in a split second, go to the main menu. But it is a little scratched finger, as the problems begin. In General, it is necessary to regularly rewrite the prints or to allow the device to remember a few different finger — all will not scratch.
Using the scanner in Zenfone 3 Ultra, you can unlock the device and answer incoming calls.
The Ultra uses the same software as in Zenfone 3, – Zen UI 3.0. Every year it is getting better, but competitors are not asleep – turns out history, like Achilles and the tortoise. This year the number of preinstalled applications was reduced when adjusting even allow to choose categories from the recommended software to put and what not. Unfortunately, this is not true for all apps – some are silently without asking the user for consent. For example, behaves completely useless in Russia ZenTalk. In the end, the screen of the smartphone still looks overloaded with icons.
Not in favor of the machines ASUS and say such things as own system fonts (worse than original), own animation, extra widgets and not always reasonable solutions to basic situations – for example, to enter the PIN-code to unlock the device, why it displays a full keyboard, while enough digital and all competitors activated it. But some proprietary applications look interesting, the original – in fact, definitely bad shell Zen UI I will not name, but in the category of “controversial” it gets clear.
As usual, the possibilities to adjust the device under itself, rife – that ASUS did not take away. You can display not only app shortcuts, but the folders from the file Manager. Settings mass is like the “anti-iPhone”, where instead of a totalitarian “we thought of everything for you” comes libertarian “vodstroi all by itself”. For those who like to Tinker with the gadget, it will definitely like it.
