Yes, Motorola no longer plays a decisive role in the market – the new RAZR we probably can not wait have never been. But to do something faceless? Maybe quality, but normal? This is not about Moto – brand Lenovo is clearly needed in order to take the risk. New smartphones Z-series – in the manner of last year’s Z, Z Play and Z Force – received an unusual piece, as if inherited by engineers from Google, under the wing which Motorola huddled for several years. Talking about modular design, albeit in a much less radical implementation than Google Ara.

On the back panel of any smartphone lineup, the Z, you can attach the accessory with different properties: logicnazi extra battery, column, projector, or camera with optical zoom. Column, by the way, co-developed with JBL to create a PV panel attracted no less Hasselblad – or at least used big name Swedish company.

To our test got the “base” model of the Moto Z, which stands in the middle between the less powerful, but designed for long operation time without recharging Z Play and similar technical characteristics, but it is equipped with unbreakable display Z Force. In addition to modularity just want to draw your attention to some distinctive features of Moto Z: still rare for smartphones under the brand name of Samsung AMOLED screen, ultra-slim (slightly more than five millimeters) case, stuffed with microphones, so should improve the quality of communication. And finally, the latest trend innovation – the lack of a mini-Jack for headphones.

Moto Z – information about the hardware according to CPU-Z

Appearance, ergonomics and software

We used to adjust the appearance of the world for themselves – at least in small things to surround themselves with “their” individual things. Recently one of the Central objects in our lives have become smartphones – small, slightly distinguishable from each other pieces of metal/plastic with a screen. To Express themselves through them only with the help of designer protective cases. In the days of phones with removable batteries and, accordingly, exchangeable back covers, some companies have offered variations in this region. Motorola is still working the people who remember those days – and a new family concept of the removable back cover has returned. The battery, however, fixed, but then came to the aid of the modularity.

Moto Z out of the box looks a bit scary, with a protruding “Adam’s Apple” of the camera, the brand glossy surface and sparkling contacts for connection of plug-in modules. Back cover lies separately – she slightly covers her “shame” and returns the smartphone more than the usual modern look design. The default is “fabric” (actually plastic) cover in the style of the Moto X Force. For 1 990 rubles you can buy something else – there is a plastic of different colors under the skin and under the tree. The smartphone itself is in three variations – black, white-silver and white-Golden (gold or silver painted rear magnetic panel). Can you imagine the scope for combinatorics.

Plug-in modules, and cover, mounted on the back of the magnets is in one movement and very reliable. Implemented is really cool. And indeed the sophistication and the quality of performance Moto Z in the first place makes me think about iPhone. The more that catches the eye and the lack of a 3.5 mm connector. As a result, complete we find the adapter “USB Type-C – mini-jack”. But cable “USB Type-C to USB Type-A” in the box no, the wire to complete a charger, why it is soldered tightly. If you want to connect the device to a computer – buy the cable separately. An inexplicable decision, to be honest.

Moto Z front panel: on screen – the speaker (direct and conversational, and for calls), the front camera lens and flash; under the screen – two microphone and a fingerprint scanner

But in the box there is a translucent bumper – I have the feeling that the equipment invented with the help of the random number generator.

Moto Z, the rear panel bottom MIC, upstairs at the centre – the main camera module with flash

However, the surprises do not end, Moto Z — a truly unusual gadget. Under the screen we see the square area here, as you might guess, a built-in fingerprint scanner and the key “Home”… But no, the last statement is incorrect – it is only the fingerprint scanner. And the button “Home” here is virtual, located on the screen. Why? Why?! Apparently, because I could. But I cheated – in fact, by the touch by the way, with vibration feedback (iPhone again?), it is possible in one movement to extinguish and turn on the display.

Moto Z upper bound: another microphone and a universal slot for SIM-cards and microSD memory cards

Moto Z, bottom side: USB Type-C

The scanner, by the way, classical, is capacitive, it works very fast and stable – if not damage or dirty finger. Everything on high standard for a modern flagship smartphone level. With a scanner you can only unlock the device or make (in the future) purchases through Android Pay.

Moto Z, a fingerprint scanner and two additional microphones

On either side of the scanner, and this is most clearly seen in the light version of Moto Z, placed two microphones. Only there’s four of them: one is located on the top edge and on the rear panel (bottom). They help to provide superior noise reduction: you will hear even in strong wind or in the subway — checked. Also I draw your attention to flash for the front camera above the display – this, however, was to the last generation senior Moto.

Moto Z right side: the power key and volume adjustment

Moto Z left side has no functional elements

On top of that Moto Z is the slimmest flagship smartphone to date: 5.19 mm. Without taking into account the protruding camera, however, it is much larger, but still nothing. In addition, for the gadget with a 5.5-inch display it is very light – only 136 grams. Lovers of glass, metal and “nice Taussig hand”, God forgive me, devices may seem lightweight – but I liked it. The machine lightly breaks the pattern – at first glance, it seems huge, especially after Sony Xperia X Compact, which I enjoyed immediately before the Moto Z. But you get used instantly. Although the use of one hand they, of course, is impossible – the screen is too big.

Add to everything mentioned above unusually organized camera module, where the lens and flash doggieday included in one round the block, and get the most outside the box-looking flagship smartphone of 2016. Yes, a little pretentious, but without the ridiculous solutions are simple, cost – good job, Motorola (or Lenovo)!

The smartphone runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with a view to upgrading to Android 7.0 Nougat. Shell, in fact, no – we are dealing with “pure” Google’s operating system, laced with only a handful of proprietary tools Moto that add a few tricks to control gestures or voice. For example, you can turn on the flashlight double chopping motion, and the screen itself is switched on if the mobile lift from the table — nice touches. And no cluttering the operating system with unnecessary applications.

Plug-in modules

I was able to try two plug-in modules for Moto Z – column JBL and the photo module Hasselblad. First of all pay attention the big names of the partner companies. Nobody will admit (at least in the foreseeable future), how great the contribution of Harman or famous Swedes in the development of these things – I recall the experience of Leica and Huawei in the creation of mobile cameras: there is every reason to believe that honored the company participates only his name and authority. However, this is only speculation.

And the modules are very interesting. In the first place draws attention to the simplicity of their use. Mounted on the body, they are instantly and very securely with a magnetic system devised and implemented perfectly. To remove them, just grab hold of the recess and apply minimal force. No switches, additional buttons-blockers – extremely intuitive and simple system.

There is no need to download and install any additional software – using a single preloaded app Moto Mods, which independently detects the module connected at the moment, and rebuilds the system for its use. An additional battery indicator in the status bar if we are talking about the column, changes the camera interface, if the plug-in Hasselblad, the smartphone is ready for it.

Externally, the Moto, the Z, of course, is changing not for the better, becoming the thinnest smartphone flagship in the thick and bulky. But also quite reasonable.

Moto JBL sound boost. One of the logical modules of the smartphone is powerful enough sound to not be ashamed to do the center of the makeshift party. However, this level of about the JBL Clip, if you look for analogues in the external mobile speakers the same brand. Power and detail even JBL Charge miniature sound boost will not give – but the thing is quite convenient and compact.

Dimensions: 152 × 73 × 13 mm Weight: 145 grams. There is the already mentioned built-in battery on 1000 mA*h, eat and so tiny built-in Moto Z the battery it will not. There is a built-in kickstand-stand. Power – 2 × 3 Watts. With this column I could do them quite successfully to “voice” peregovory on 10 – man normal result for such crumbs. Price of 6 999 rubles.

Hasselblad True Zoom makes Moto Z (and Z Play Moto) to the heir of glory (if I may use that word here) the Samsung Galaxy Zoom and Samsung Galaxy Camera. Externally, the new creation of Motorola/Lenovo is really becoming like them: a huge touchscreen display on one side and “citramalic” on the other – with a perforated ledge to grip with the right hand, protruding even in the off state, a lens, an impressive flash and even backlight autofocus. Separately amused the wart in the bottom of the bezel lens – clear stylized button releases the lens from the lens mount. The thing that gives the module Hasselblad user of the smartphone is the 10x optical zoom.

Dimensions of the product: shall be 152.3 × 72,9 × 9-15,1 mm. Weight – same 145 grams. There are two built-in microphones, the module is able to record stereo audio for video. The unit is shipped with a case that has a wrist strap — the last would have been nice is for the module, but for him it is just not provided.

Camera features – it is quite ordinary for a modern CD. A matrix with size 1/2,3’ with a resolution of 12 megapixels and optics with focal lengths of 4.5–45 mm (35 mm equivalent of 25-250 mm). In addition to optical zoom is digital and fourfold – the usual crop, reducing the image resolution. Built-in battery in the Hasselblad Zoom True no – he will devour the resources of the smartphone.

The saddest thing in this module is the optics aperture: f/3.5 to 6.5. Despite the fact that on the wide angle camera of the original Moto Z has a maximum aperture of f/1,8 – even with the use of smaller matrix (1/3’) at the same resolution the picture quality is better thanks to a much lower ISO noise is not as annoying. But the optical stabilizer is effective even at maximum zoom are more or less decent and consistent shots.

Not very good implemented autofocus is the usual contrast system running very slow and from time to time incorrect. Minimum focusing distance at wide angle is 5 cm.

Frustrating and the camera interface. It’s Hasselblad! I would like at least minimal control over the process – but there is only automatic mode and several scene to choose from. But you can record RAW but the icon works with uncompressed image format repeats the usual; strange negligence. Speaking of Leica-Huawei recalls not only extensive branding, but also an additional mode monochrome shooting.

What pleased, so is the speed. Every module has its own power button, it activates the camera app, and instantly – “trunk” of the lens extends in less than a second. There is also the shutter button with the zoom lever the zoom lever to work with the camera quite convenient.

image (15) the picture Quality is not impressive – in a better way compared to the camera of the smartphone is characterized primarily by the dynamic range, but the color reproduction and work in the dark built-in camera of Moto Z I liked more. But again, the user with Hasselblad True Zoom gets actually unique for the smartphone offer is optical zoom.

By the way, to shoot 4K video using the module not only Full HD. And if to clean it and shoot on the smartphone without problems. It smells a bit like phantasmagoria.

The price of the module is, however, 19 990 rubles, you can think about buying a full-fledged camera with a large sensor and built-in Wi-Fi to transfer files to the smartphone and not lose speed.

The most logical module available today in existence is an extra battery Incipio offGRID price of 3 990 rubles – it is really useful and much more convenient powerbank to use. Lenovo promises great expand the fleet of plug-in modules and it will be interesting to see what else you can come up with in this specific area.
