Review of the smartphone LG V20, or Why you need two screens and two cameras
In interesting time we live in: manufacturers of gadgets, did not hesitate to give out for unique new things to ten or twelve years ago was quite familiar. For example, LG is producing yet another smartphone with two screens, refers back to the beginning of the 2000s. Additional screen often required a phone in clamshell form-factor and it showed the time, incoming messages, missed calls and other service information. And this is just more than anyone succeeded is LG. But when the most popular format of mobile phones has become a bar, the need for additional screen disappeared. And now, when the display became the main governing body, and at the same time the main consumer of energy in the smartphone, the presence of official display had meaning again.
LG V20 of the second touch screen, it provides quick access to applications, and always shows the time, date, battery and so on. Not to say that without this element it is difficult to do, but he gently introduces some novelty into everyday experience with the phone. The Touch Bar in the MacBook Pro lineup in 2016.

Design, ergonomics, software
When comparing LG V20 with V10 I must admit that the second generation model has changed for the better as part of the design. The last model had a unusual back cover with rubberized coating and texture. It looked unusual, but easy to use, to put it mildly, not added – the item was clearly invented solely in order to allocate once the device against the competition. Now the manufacturers are generally big identity issues – with nine out of ten smartphones are not to distinguish from each other.
LG split hairs this time did not and preferred a more relaxed and practical design, creating not too original, but cute and comfortable smartphone. Back cover has a smooth and pure metal. The type of aluminum (AL6013) is widely used in the aircraft industry, but such a move has become normal for smartphones: durable glass Gorilla Glass, if you didn’t know, was originally delivered to Boeing, and now most of the orders the company received from Corning consumer technology. However, we will not be distracted.
LG V20 is available in three colors: titanium (dark grey), silver and pink. The color is well visible behind and on the front panel there are only two narrow strips at the top and bottom of the screen. Everything else is the screen with large black frame, which is the second screen.
The arrangement of functional elements usually for smartphones LG: on the left are the volume buttons and the bottom speaker, the USB-C port and a 3.5 mm headset connector. Located on the right side button initially take over the call button of the camera – and it would be convenient. But the reality is much more interesting.
This button locks the battery cover and, consequently, allows you to remove it. And there’s a removable battery, just like old times. However, this is not the only surprise. Also under the hood there are two slots for SIM-cards and a separate expansion slot for microSD cards. That is to choose between second SIM and memory LG V20 owners do not have to.
On the back there is round the fingerprint sensor, combined with the power button, as well as two cameras, a flash and a window with a low-power laser to help the camera focus faster.
It is worth noting that in LG refused the location of the keys adjust the volume on the rear panel – they are on more familiar place on the side.
In fact, the size of the phone is caused by the large diagonal main screen – 5.7 inches. However, it is noticeable that the designers really tried to make it up. The case is pretty thin (7.6 mm), the sides gently rounded, and not clearly protruding parts, except for the cell block at the rear. Metal case will easily take a fall from a small height, but still LG V20 is not marketed as a secure device. Even protection from dust and moisture, which has become standard for flagship handsets, it does not.
An additional screen is initially declared as auxiliary. The main display, especially if it’s IPS-matrix high resolution, consumes a lot of energy, so that the second screen phenomenon is quite logical. The very small diagonal of 2.1 inches, resolution – 160 × 1040 pixels, but also of such parameters is enough to perform all the assigned functions.
On some smartphones (mostly with AMOLED displays) is a function of the always on display which displays service information in the standby mode without much damage to the autonomy. Other manufacturers go for various tricks: for example, the iPhone 7 automatically turns the screen on when you lift it from the table or turn the screen towards you, holding hands. But the decision of the LG to be honest, we like much more. Displays the time and icons is just one of the additional display. In addition, the screen can display icons for quick access to apps and settings. For example, flashlight, notes or calendar. When playing music or video on the sub screen displays buttons to switch tracks, but in normal mode it displays all push notifications from instant messengers, email clients and even advertising of “free” versions of apps. Well, the most important feature – ability to display any short message as a reminder or motivator. You can even be a little “play font”. So the only wish for the future is the use of AMOLED-matrix instead of the IPS. First, it is more economical, and secondly – more readable in the sun.
LG V20 initially running Android 7.0 Nougat. Proprietary shell slightly changes the usual interface, adds settings (in particular, for the second screen) and at the same time not trying to please everyone a large set of preinstalled applications. By default, the smartphone only contains app LG Health, the utility for backup, easy notes and tape recorder.
However, the shell was surprisingly poorly optimized. The smartphone is running on top hardware, manages to lag and fail at the simplest tasks, like browsing the desktop and clear the list of notifications. Performance testing shows the expected results – we will talk, therefore, it is clear that the problem is only in V20 software.
Display and sound
The main screen (IPS matrix, diagonal of 5.7 inches, 1440 × 2560 pixels, the density of 513 ppi) produces an extremely pleasant experience. The sharpness with this resolution and the physical size is just outrageous – to the envy of the Retina display in any iPhone. However, instrumental tests reveal certain shortcomings.
And if with maximum brightness and contrast relative to other IPS displays here the relative order (although 860:1 is not the score expected of a flagship smartphone), the color temperature goes much in the direction of cold tones. Similar symptoms are observed in the flagships of Sony. The Japanese company believes that high color temperature more users to enjoy. In our tests, LG V20 color temperature amounted to an average of 9500 K, while the benchmark is considered to be 6500 K.
Color in a logical manner was not very accurate — the average deviation of DeltaE ColorChecker table that includes shades of grey and an extended color gamut, was 7.22 at the end of normal in 3. Color gamut wider than the sRGB reference space. Average gamma is not beyond the normal limits and remains at the level of 2.39.
LG traditionally pays attention to the audio capabilities of its smartphones. In V20 there is a separate DAC (ESS Sabre ES9218), tuning specialists Bang&Olufsen. Such statements, however, can hardly be taken seriously. Mention famous brands typically is to create added value and does not affect the quality. The canonical example is the camera of the smartphone Huawei P9 (with Leica logo) and 8 Honor (without logo) exactly the same. And laptops HP logo beats on the case sounded exactly the same as without a logo. The net marketing.
In the case of V20 we have not noticed any particular difference in the sound with the iPhone 7 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S7. You can mark only large volume – for example, we never had to “Unscrew” the sound more than 60 percent, but in the rest of the V20 sounds exactly the same as any other smartphone And brand.
