Review Sony Xperia XZ Premium: a solid smartphone for respectable gentlemen
Last year Sony surprised many: the company issued one year, in fact, two of the flagship. First in a new series, the Japanese showed Xperia X Performance — he was the most powerful of the new smartphones, so it seemed that this is the flagship. However, later the company made the Xperia XZ — a device with a similar filling, but the larger screen and new design concept, which suddenly became the new leader of the family. Perhaps the company was unhappy with sales, and maybe this was a clever marketing ploy, the essence of which none of the townsfolk did not understand. Anyway, this year Sony are different, updating the entire series at once.
The leader of the lineup is getting the Xperia XZ Premium, which is conceptually similar to Xperia X5 Premium, and the heir of last year’s flagship, Xperia XZs becomes more compact and affordable alternative. Well, in the first League this season are Xperia XA1 and XA1 Ultra. It seems that Sony is trying to build a single line from different models past and to think more about quality than about quantity. Well, let’s see how good the new flagship Xperia and that he can oppose the market leader in the face of Samsung Galaxy S8.

Design, ergonomics and software
At first glance – nothing special for Sony and nothing new. The current flagship is made in the usual style of Sony and is similar to the Xperia XZ, increased in size, — the same sharp edges, the same large space on top and bottom. The ratio of screen area to total surface is quite impressive — a total of 68 : 100. Compare this with the Samsung Galaxy S8 and 83 : 100. However, it is to be noted that the side frames are quite thin, and protective glass is a bit comes on the side, which affects the visual perception of the smartphone.
As befits a flagship in 2017, the Xperia XZ case Premium made of glass and metal. Front and rear panel is completely covered with glass Gorilla glass 5. Interestingly, in the silver version of the smartphone back panel is mirrored, it is possible to look and it is very popular with the girls. In addition to the silver variant, the Xperia XZ Premium is available in black and pink. However, the latter option has not yet started to sell in Russia.
The side faces are smooth, rounded, the smartphone is comfortable to hold in hand, despite its impressive size – about the same feeling I had with the iPhone 7 Plus. But straight lines on the top and bottom may cause discomfort in those who are accustomed to wearing a smartphone in the front pocket of my jeans. Here Sony is repeating the mistakes made by the designers rectangular Lumia Windows Phone.
The location of the main elements on the case has not changed. On top is the audio Jack with a cross section of 3.5 mm. it’s Nice that Sony has a dubious trend that picked up in the Apple and HTC, and doesn’t force you to upgrade to wireless headphones or models with the USB-C port.
Below is becoming the new standard USB Type-C, and on the right edge of the rendered volume keys, power button (with integrated fingerprint) and start the camera. On the left side is a compartment under the SIM card and the flash drive microSD. Traditional trouble Sony smartphones – each time removing that tray, the device automatically goes into a reboot, despite the fact that there are no technical constraints for hot-swappable SIM card and microSD memory is long gone.
In terms of dimensions, the Xperia XZ Premium surprise: the thickness of 7.9 mm has long been impressive, a width of 77 mm allows you to work with your smartphone with one hand — the text can be entered without problems, but to the top edge to reach hard. And of course, I must say that the smartphone is too heavy – it weighs 191 grams. It even slightly heavier than iPhone 7 Plus, which seems overly weighty. Besides, I have serious concerns about reliability – heavy smartphone easier to break. The owners of Xperia Z5 Premium actively complained about the fragility, because even a fall from a height of 60-70 cm has led to cracks on the back panel or on the screen. In General, test XZ Premium strength I did not, but I advise you to use it very carefully.
But there is good news: protection against dust and moisture will not go away. Sony Xperia XZ Premium meets the standard IP68 and can withstand a half-hour stay under water at a depth of five feet. And a dedicated camera key makes it suitable for underwater photography. However, the manufacturer stresses that this is only an ordinary smartphone, but not a complete scuba unit.
Going back to a dedicated camera key, you can enable quick launch: you can give the object a smartphone with the screen off and press the camera — the picture will be taken. In some situations, saved the second can play a decisive role, so that feature will definitely be useful.
Sony Xperia XZ Premium initially working on the seventh version of Android (Nougat). The operating system looks nice, but Sony, in turn, does not force you to own programs and utilities. The new flagship of the originally installed only the usual set of applications Lifelog, PlayStation, Movie Creator, Xperia Lounge. Plus the standard design themes replaced by a brand, but they look even cuter and transformyour Android interface beyond recognition.
