HTC has long been, as they say, is not the same. When a company fought on equal footing with Samsung, LG, Sony and — Oh, there were times — Nokia, and the “real” Chinese (then still in Taiwan!) she didn’t even look down, but just could not see them. Now, the company records a continuous losses and finds itself among the largest manufacturers of smartphones. Last year, the ice seemed a little blurry, but HTC 10 had no impact on the situation (at least positive), and Google Pixel impressed the journalists, entering into all sorts of tops the best smartphone of the year, and showed that HTC still knows how to make good smartphones… but also not brought special dividends.

It’s time to take drastic measures? Maybe it’s time. Consider whether such a measure the release of HTC U Ultra – “more flagship”? Let’s talk about that, too. Company it abuts not on the technical features (additional display ultraextra front camera) or atypical design, and software platform capabilities Sense and virtual assistant Sense Companion in particular. HTC U Ultra the move starts to bombard the endless updates and to offer assistance in a variety of situations – HTC decided to ride in fashion now machine learning. Remembering the days when Sense was really advanced and seemed like a real saving in comparison with the rather ugly stock Android, still want at the start to ask another question: does the user need alternate Google Now?

HTC U Ultra – information about stuffing according to CPU-Z

Design, ergonomics and software

Today smartphones with metal back cover can be found in the price range “for the surrender of will.” Major companies have moved to active examination of the topic of glass – two sides they cover your model Samsung, LG and Huawei (Honor), and now Xiaomi, HTC pulled. The front glass closer to the edges of gently sloping and 2.5 D. Rear panel is curved more markedly – all for less visual thickness. Just the plan breaks the strongly protruding above the body of the camera to these tricks we are beginning to wean. This is all the more strange that by itself, the smartphone is actually not too thin – 8 mm. Many competitors are teetering on the brink of seven millimeters.

The problem of the traditional glass devices – high-gloss surfaces are very actively collected prints. This also applies to the white version, which we got to test, and even more – the most spectacular blue, which flashes on all promotional material. Alive it is also very impressive – it managed to look closely at MWC 2017. But impressive how quickly zalamyvayutsya glass – wipe will always have.

HTC U Ultra front panel: above the display is the second screen, front camera, earpiece, proximity sensors and lighting, as well as an additional microphone; below the display – touch Home key and the back key to the previous screen and the menu of open applications

But it is bad. Much worse is the case with a glass front. For him, it seems, forgot to do oleophobic coating – with such soiled me in recent years not had to face.

HTC U Ultra rear panel: protruding from the housing of the camera lens unit with laser illumination autofocus and dual led flash. At the bottom is visible another microphone

Another feature of HTC U Ultra – he is very big. Yes, this is expected for a device with a 5.7-inch display, but here the situation is aggravated by the presence of the hardware key “Home” and the extra screen. Well, negative for U Ultra background in the face of LG G6 and the Samsung Galaxy S8, where the framework, by contrast, refused almost – and smartphones, in fact, you can use it with one hand. U Ultra also want to use the word “phablet”, but still stoop to such baseness, we will not.

HTC U Ultra, left side has no functional elements

HTC U Ultra, right side: volume rocker and power key

Accustomed to the size of a smartphone, pay attention to its specific characteristics – for example, the secondary display slightly higher primary. Such a decision we have already seen in the performance of LG – models V10, V20 and X View. Here the idea is implemented the same way – the screen is sideways from the front camera.

HTC U Ultra, top face: slot for two SIM cards or one SIM and memory card and microphone

HTC U Ultra, bottom side: USB Type-C connector, speaker and the fourth (spoken) microphone

But if the screens here, one more than we used to, headphone jacks – one less. Mini-Jack U Ultra HTC has missed Taiwanese for some reason, decided to go the path of Apple. With bonus sealed to at least IP67 rated here. A very sad situation.

The rest is well known to the 10 HTC: and touch Home key with haptic feedback and an inbuilt fingerprint scanner, and two navigation icons on either side of it and three mechanical keys (volume adjustment and inclusion, the latter a specific form) on the right side.

The fingerprint scanner works very quickly and accurately, problems with the recognition complained of some colleagues, I have not noticed – a typical capacitive sensor. From time to time it is necessary to overwrite the fingerprint sensor is sensitive to the slightest damage to the skin, all the rest is OK. Biometrics is used only to unlock the device.

image (34) HTC U Ultra running Android 7.0 Nougat – naturally, with a proprietary shell Sense, which the Taiwanese have largely made a name for himself. Read more about it, I told in the review HTC 10, since then has changed a bit in fact, but a lot of little things. The main feature remained the same – very flexible to configure the appearance of the shell, where you can change the Wallpaper, fonts and icons, but in General the logic of the desktop (but not the whole interface in General, of course) – there is a Freestyle theme. In the classic scheme, you cannot change the matrix of icons (4 × 4) and abandon the obsolete, I think the application menu. On the spot news and page Blinkfeed, which periodically crawls the advertising message (do you like to watch ads on the desktop of your smartphone?). In the rest of the Sense – quick, cute and energy-efficient shell, although “eat” the battery in standby mode, it could be smaller.

Key features U Ultra HTC – Sense Companion helper, which studies your behavior and based on your preferences offers different: some events happening nearby, tips about the weather and so on. Something like Google Now, but to enable it, need to click on a special icon. Of the features can be noted that the Companion is in theory able to recognize the owner’s voice, through which he activates the gadget on the team, and what a week of use to study of my habits it was not enough.
