In theory, Android is able to do data backup regular means. Information about installed applications, their data, system settings, access point, Wi-Fi, contacts, calendar entries and other important information should be copied to a Google server and to recover after the user comes to a new device under the same account. In practice, however, a standard backup does not work as I would like.

Backup all data, except for tied to Google services, can be adjusted by setting a check box. The user

has no ability to see what will be kept, and how to influence it.

Therefore, there are cases when after restoring the previously saved data is that more than half valuable settings lost. Well, if the information stored on the device, is of value, is to look for an alternative for backups.

Helium (in the past it was called Carbon) is a relatively new application created by a skilled developer named Koushik Dutta. Despite the fact that during the first appearance of the application in Google Play there already existed dozens of backup solutions, Helium immediately became popular. The main reason is that this program is designed for a wide range of users: it has a very simple interface, and does not necessarily gain root access to the device.

In the current version of Helium only works with application passwords to access the Wi-Fi networks with the help of this program transfer will fail. Helium displays a list of all installed applications and choose those that you want to save the data. To choose the application manually, you can create groups and it is too late to work with them.

By default, Helium backs up only the data from applications and programs when restore prompts you to re-download from Google Play. This is done to save space, because the distributions of some applications “weigh” quite a lot. However, if enough space for the backup, using Helium you can get a full copy.

In the free version there are only two places to save a backup: directly on the device (internal memory or SD card) or on computer. To obtain a copy of the data on a PC, you must install the client software. However, if you plan to use the app on a device without obtaining root access, without installing the desktop application is still not enough. In order for Helium to work, you must connect your smartphone or tablet to computer via USB and wait until the desktop app detects the device.

In the paid version of Helium places where you can save copies of data, much more. So, you can use cloud storage Dropbox, Box and “Google Drive”. Because of this, you can not only create backups in case of failure or change the device, but also sync data between multiple devices. To evaluate the synchronization can, for example, fans of mobile games.

Backups can be performed according to a predetermined user schedule and AutoBackup can always be viewed in a special section of the app.

Titanium Backup

Titanium Backup refers to those applications which are appreciated not for ease of use, and for a variety of functions. The program’s interface is not the most convenient, but with its task it copes perfectly well. However, the users targeted by Titanium Backup, not from those who are afraid of complicated settings. The application can perform its functions only after the device received root access, as the developers are warning right in its name in Google Play.

The free version of backup is performed on SD-card. Premium users can also copy data to cloud services Dropbox, Box and Google Drive.

After the permission for root access is obtained, on the tab “Backup”, you can see everything you can save. Titanium Backup is able to work not only with apps and their data, but also with the various system utilities and settings. For clarity in the list of all that can be saved different types of data are highlighted in different colors. On the contrary, every feature has an icon that indicates the source application in the internal memory or on the SD card. There is also information about the time of the last backup or that it was yet to be established. For the convenience of working with a list of programs and components provided for sorting and filtering.

To sort the list by name, last copies, the frequency of retaining copies, for installation date, last update time, size of applications and data. Filters give the ability to hide some components from the list. For example, those that already have a copy, may not be displayed. You can also view only the user or system application that is hosted solely in the internal or external memory of the device.

Working with a list of applications that user can create backup for each of them individually. To do this, simply select the application from the list, then touch the “Save” button. However, it is much easier to use batch actions Titanium Backup, will be accessed with a small button next to the “Menu”. This is where lies the main power of the backup application.

One touch to backup all custom software, system or data of both. You can delete all backups, which for more than three days, or copy programs that have been uninstalled. You can make copies only updated or only new. In addition, in Titanium Backup there is an automatic check of all the previously created backups.

Here you can find some useful functions that are not directly related to backups, but can be useful in the operation of the device. For example, one tap to clear cache of all apps, delete all data user and system programs, uninstall all apps that have a backup (or those for which they are not), remove all programs you have installed, or everything on the device.

Data recovery is performed in the same window. Depending on the tasks to restore, you can choose from several options to deliver all missing apps with data; all application versions in the backup is newer than the current; everything plus system data.

Conveniently, Titanium Backup can run on a schedule. Prevent the user from puzzling over the creation of backup jobs, the application has created two basic tasks: automatic update of backups for modified data and create copies for new and updated software. These tasks are by default not running. You can edit the run time and make them active. In total, the app is available to more than fifteen different tasks that can be performed in automatic mode.

They include, for example, cache cleaning programs, deleting old backups, create a backup of all system data, etc. set automatic backup can include the time and day of the week. You can also restrict it to run in cases where at the specified time, the device is not connected to the mains or by USB. Also in automatic mode, you can reboot the device upon completion of the operation.

Super Backup: SMS & Contacts

User data that can be of value, not limited to installed applications. With the free program Super Backup: SMS & Contacts, you can create a backup of contacts, call history, calendar, bookmarks, and SMS. For SMS there is a choice of individual interviews. All data is by default reserved for internal memory, but if you have the SD card in the settings you can specify the folder to save it. The backup can also be sent to the email address as an attachment.

The application is very flexible settings for automatic backups. So, separately, you can adjust the time the backup of SMS, contacts and call history. Depending on how actively you use your device and how important the data on it, this period can range from one day to one month. Sending a backup by mail can also run in automatic mode, and to save space on the memory card files can be deleted automatically after sending.

Super Backup: SMS & Contacts also works with applications. However, to quickly create a backup copy of all installed software will fail — the application you need to select in the list one by one. All applications that have already generated copies are displayed in the tab “Archive”. It is here possible to restore them from backup. Not to worry about the timely creation of copies of the software, can be configured to enable automatic backups when you install new software, and a notification that the backup was not created more than two weeks. Note also that for apps Super Backup: SMS & Contacts requires root privileges.

Go Backup Pro

Go Backup Pro can work with local data store, and cloud. The developers have even created separate tabs to manage different types of backups. The list of supported cloud storage in General, a standard — Dropbox, Box and “Google Drive”.

Backups can run in two modes: when the user selects the desired components separately or (usually more conveniently) at a time when a copy of the same data type. The developers Go Backup Pro shared all the data available for reservation, into four categories: user apps, system apps, system data (ringtones, Wallpapers, access point, Wi-Fi and a boot loader) and user data (contacts, calls, SMS, MMS, bookmarks, and calendar). During mass create copies it is possible to allocate the components separately, and it is possible one stroke to select the entire category or even several.

But even if the copies were created for specific applications, later using Go Backup Pro, you can find duplicates and delete them, and merge multiple copies into one. To recover data the program is also able in batch mode, selecting the new copy.

Schedule the GO Backup Pro can create a copy of user data (contacts, messages, calendar entries and other things), system settings, and applications. The program can even notify that the time will soon come backup, and warns you that you have reached the maximum number of files to backup. Their quantity can be controlled in the settings. Here there is the option to enable automatic backup when installing or updating apps.

In addition to the main features of GO Backup Pro gives you the ability to freeze some apps. Freezing means that the app locks up and completely stops its work, but it is not removed from the system at any time it can unfreeze and continue working with him.

Despite the variety of applications for data backup, among them such, which one could say: “It is clearly superior to all others for all parameters”. Therefore, if you choose the decision for yourself, you should answer several questions: what data you plan to backup, how often you plan to do and whether a function of mass saving, is it important to save backups to the cloud and sync with other devices. Finally, it is worth to pay attention that for saving application data, all programs, except for Helium, require root rights to the device.
