Review of the protected Nikon Coolpix AW120: dive with a map
Nikon brought to market its first protected CD in the moment when between Olympus and Panasonic have already started serious struggle for the wallets of potential buyers of such cameras. The first pancake came out lumpy, even more, the Coolpix AW100 has been so successful that in fact set new standards in the segment. That only is quite detailed built-in world map with marked names of major streets and POI! AW110 continued the work of the firstborn. First, we strengthened the defense drop, was not with half, but with two feet, plus immersed in water at 18 meters. Second, LCD display with 460 thousand points gave way to a OLED-matrix with a resolution of 614 thousand pixels. Third, in addition to GPS appeared built-in Wi-Fi module. Of course, the was finalized and the software.
AW120 went even further. Probably, the main innovation is a different lens, which is at a slightly reduced focal range can boast higher aperture: ƒ/2,8-4,9 against ƒ/3,9-4,8 both predecessors. Of course, AW100 and AW110 differed slightly greater range, but the new model features a significantly more wide-angle lens, which, for example, allows you to shoot architecture in dense urban areas, and when shooting under water, where the angle is slightly narrowed, using a more wide angle lens is preferable.
Was also updated the display. As AW110, use the OLED-matrix, but its resolution was increased to 921 thousand points. Protective characteristics in comparison with the parameters from the protected model has not changed. However, not much point in that, because of the ability to dive to 18 meters in most cases more than enough — to dive deeper without consequences can only one camera. She knows how to fall from a greater height but only 10 cm, which in theory should withstand and AW120.
In addition, the novelty substantially revised form majority governments. Separately, a stand-alone operation after the battery has remained the same, and declared the autonomy of grown on 100 frames — 350 250 against its predecessor.

Appearance and usability
At first glance, the novelty has not changed, but they are — and they are not so little. Let’s start with the colors. As before, the four of them — the camera can be black, blue, orange or painted in khaki. In the latter case, the elements of the pattern larger, so the camera looks more interesting. Small differences from its predecessor it is worth noting the smaller the notch on the button of descent and the embossed pattern on the sidewalls of the body, consisting of many small holes through which the camera is fixed a little safer in the hand.
But the most significant difference in the housing are rounded controls. Side keys of rectangular steel oval, but almost all of the buttons on the back surface, with the exception of key videos from the square was transformed into a round. In the rest of the major external changes in the Coolpix AW120 is not. Build quality, as befits a secure CD, on top, and when trying to twisting and squeezing the body does not produce any sound.
Front are the lens, led lamp the AF-assist illuminator, built-in stereo pair of microphones and a window built-in flash.
From the rear most part of the surface is a large display to the right of which are grouped the main controls. The control lever zoom lens, which appeared in the model AW110, replacing the usual key-swing AW100, remained unchanged. Also untouched was key video. The remaining buttons, as already noted, the steel round is key select the operation mode transition to the playback mode, display the main menu, delete and a 4-positiony multifunction switch, complemented by input button in the center.
The top is only a couple of buttons — power and shutter. Below is just a connector mounting on a tripod.
On the left side there is the system speaker, and the arrow keys switch to mode of viewing the map and control the camera by tilting the hull is a standard “feature” of the protected Nikon cameras, to which we will return later. On the right you can find a massive door with two-step the original lock. Under the door hidden compartments install the battery and memory card, as well as connectors HDMI and USB cable. It should be noted that micro-USB connector, the new product is deprived of the function of the analog output, although AW110 she was. However, in recent years, the number of cameras that support analog AV output slowly but surely declining.
